Business challengesOEMs, owners and serviceorganizations that supportand sustain complex capitalassets (such as aircraft, ships, power plants, machinery, medical devices and infra-structure elements) face ademanding array of challenges, including the need to:

• Leverage design manufacturingand service data. OEMsneed to be able to leveragetheir design/build knowledgeto establish a market advantagewhen they compete as serviceproviders.OEMs also needto capture as-maintainedresults from asset ownersand other service providersto improve their productofferings.

• Implement service leveland performance-basedcontracts. Many of today’scustomers want theirservice contracts to measureperformance issues thatare more meaningful thanconventional hourly rateand parts replacementmetrics. These contractsneed to measure assetavailability/reliability andorganizational performancefactors that reflect a betterunderstanding of assets, partsand supply chain activity.

• Reduce MRO cycle time.Service teams need tominimize the turnaroundtime needed to resolveservice events.

• Minimize MRO costs andimprove the use of workingcapital. Inventoried levels ofparts, tools and equipmentneed to be optimized tosupport today’s capital assets.Organizations need to keepsufficient quantities ofthe right parts in reservewithout retaining unnecessaryoverstocks, holding thewrong parts, or incurringcostly backorders.Workcapacity needs to be increasedthrough leaner operations.

• Increase service teamproductivity. Serviceorganizations can improveproductivity by minimizing thetime required to performnon-essential tasks (such assearching for instructionalinformation or performing“paperwork”), thereby freeingtechnicians to resolve theirassigned service events. Bestpractices should enable leanoperations and facilitate thecapture of intellectualproperty that ensures theproductivity of newly hiredservice technicians.

• Maximize operationalavailability. Capital assetsneed to remain operationalas along as possible. Sustainedoperability improves returnon asset investment, whileenabling individual assetsto fully complete theircritical missions.

To address these issues,Siemens PLM Software providesTeamcenter for MRO solutions.Teamcenter’s product lifecyclemanagement (PLM) technologyenables organizations toestablish a service datamanagement environmentthat can capture, organize, optimize and utilize knowledgethroughout the entire lifecycleof a complex product –particularly while the productis being maintained andserviced. This environment isextended for service providerswith MRO process manage-ment applications providingmaintenance planning, maintenance, executionand material management.Within this environment,Teamcenter also providesa logistics records managementsolution that integratesthe logistics planningprocess directly into theengineering process.

Teamcenter’s Service Data Management solution

Service Data Management: facilitating total assetvisibility and lifecycle collaborationTeamcenter’s Service Data Management (SDM) solutionprovides a single source of service data that supportsmanufacturers as well as service providers with the knowledgethey require to be effective in their portions of the lifecycle. For the manufacturer SDM bridges the gaps between productengineering, manufacturing, logistics and services with a singleknowledge source that improves collaboration in any directionof the product lifecycle. The service provider utilizes SDM tomanage service information anywhere it originates in the servicevalue chain to support service operations. SDM’s ServiceDashboard provides OEM and service providers with insight

via dashboards and reports into product, asset and processperformance metrics that are critical to achieve commitmentssuch as PBL and SLA contracts.

Service Data Management captures, manages, and provides data andmetrics on a wide range of operational knowledge including:

• Configuration information that describes the complete statusof an asset

• Comprehensive change and event histories that describeindividual assets and their related parts

• Technical information (such as life usage characteristicsand limits) that define the useful life of each asset’sdeployed components

• Compliance standards and regulatory requirements thatthe operational asset must satisfy

• Baselines and common information that combine configurationinformation, change/event histories, technical information andcompliance standards/regulatory requirements for each classof managed asset

• External service event actions and information

• Changes to the asset configuration (such as removal/replacement of serialized components)

• Logs of overhauls, inspections, fault codes, service bulletinincorporations and field orders

• Operational utilization information against the asset orits components

• Deviation authority and reasons for removal/change

• Discrepancies and their corrective actions

Manufacturers leverage Teamcenter’s configurationmanagement capabilities to link physical product configurations(i.e., configurations that incorporate serialized part and lottracking) with as-designed engineering configurations and tolink operational feedback with products for next-generationimprovements. Owners, operators and third-party serviceproviders use Teamcenter to capture, develop and manageasset and service information from the service value chain.

Subsequently, service teams can access all allowable configurationsto determine what approved parts and alternate/substitute partscan be used to resolve a service event as quickly as possible.

Teamcenter’s Maintenance Planning solution

Planning maintenance for component, subsystemand end-item assetsThe key to accelerating the MRO cycle and minimizing its costs restsin the ability to accurately and comprehensively plan the serviceorganization’s MRO activities. If organizations incorporate bestpractices into their MRO plans, they can implement comprehensivemaintenance plans that:

• Improve service team productivity

• Maximize asset availability (uptime)

• Accelerate service event turnaround times

• Minimize unnecessary tasks in the MRO cycle

• Incorporate best practices, experience and lean improvements intomaintenance procedures

• Deploy assets for efficient service life

To meet these objectives,Teamcenter’s Maintenance Planning solutionenables organizations to:

• Establish maintenance requirements and frequency for an entire base ofassets (as well as for specific assets) by capturing information frommanufacturer maintenance plans, logistical information, technicalmanuals, corrosion prevention programs, structural inspections, andasset modification programs.Maintenance Planning also helpsorganizations recognize requirements driven by unique assetconfiguration and operating conditions.

• Analyze each asset in terms of its operational hours, maintenance cycle and utilization data and then generate aforecasted maintenance schedule for the asset’s relatedequipment and components.

• Define the resources for each forecasted requirement in workcards that identify the steps, tools, materials and scheduling thatneed to be arranged.

• Account for unscheduled maintenance by providing resolutionprocedures and resource requirements for immediate repairor deferred discrepancies.

• Effectively plan service visits by eliminating redundant tasks, generatinga normalized bill of materials and work instructions, and deliveringservice forecasts that can be used to plan upcoming visits andassess near term requirements.

• Gather maintenance requirements into a broad plan that can beanalyzed to minimize duplicate work, combine service events, and reduce the cost of rectifying service bulletins and regulatorycompliance maintenance. In addition, organizations often use theplan to capture and implement best practices, past experiencesand lean processes that they can subsequently apply across theservice chain.

Teamcenter’s Maintenance Execution solution

Managing the execution of service eventsTeamcenter’s Maintenance Execution solution enables serviceorganizations to manage the execution of their MRO activitiesand track service team performance – thereby providing afoundation for today’s total quality service initiatives. Equallyimportant, this solution captures key indicators that provideorganizations with a basis for supporting performance-drivenservice initiatives – such as performance based logistics (PBL)and service level agreement contracts (SLA).

Within this context, Maintenance Execution enables serviceorganizations to:

• Digitally distribute work orders, instructions and all necessarydocumentation to point-of-service technicians

• Track closure of all work requirements, thereby supportingaudits for compliance verification audits

• Report service event information back to manufacturers orservice integrators via a service event management capabilitythat allows product performance to be fully understood

In the Teamcenter environment, maintenance management beginswhen service managers create work cards to define what tasksare needed to meet an asset’s maintenance requirements.Thework card’s planning information is retained in Teamcenter, including the steps, tools, materials, skill sets and time neededto complete each forecasted requirement.

As these scheduled requirements are ready to be executed, service managers leverage Maintenance Execution to:

• Sort and assign work orders and associated job cards by workzone, process and skill set

• Digitally distribute the work orders to service team membersfor subsequent execution

• Support the use of export control regulations by managingwork assignments in nationally mixed environments

As the service team performs the maintenance in question,Maintenance Execution tracks the work order in real timeby capturing:

• Actual manpower, parts, tools and equipment utilized tocomplete the task

• Metrics on life-limited parts, deviations, discrepancies anddeferred defects

• Corrective actions performed, as well as non-routine findings

• Job card completion information for audit support andcompliance verification
