volunteers, Gunderson and Nichols,

heading out to deliver meals.

It’s almost Spring and we are anxiously awaiting the return of green.

On January 11th the Sierra Club of Delaware recognized the City of Wilmington as Delaware’s first “Cool City” and honored Mayor James M. Baker for his efforts to aggressively adopt policies and programs that promote energy sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate protection.

The Sierra Club of Delaware’s Cool Cities Program is a statewide volunteer effort that encourages local governments to adopt policies and programs that protect the environment and citizens.

Mayor Baker thanked the Sierra Club for the recognition and congratulated Sierra Club members for their years of dedication to preserving the environment and the planet.

The mayor extended his appreciation to the citizens of Wilmington and the City’s many “green” community and business partners for adopting and supporting climate sustainability programs.

For more information about Wilmington climate sustainability programs, visit the City’s website at: www.WilmingtonDE.gov

For more information about Sierra Club of Delaware’s Cool Cities program, visit: http://coolcitiesde.us

I hope you enjoy the magazine. Cheers!

Meals On Wheels Delaware is a non-profit 501c3 organization working with five meal-providing agencies and thousands of volunteers from corporations, civic,

religious and community groups. Together, the program provides and delivers meals every day to almost 4,000 homebound seniors. In fact, nearly 600,000 meals were served throughout the state. Meal recipients can have an income at any level and usually

live on their own, but are unable to prepare meals. Disabled, homebound individuals who are of the ages 18 – 59 may be eligible for meals as well. Meals On Wheels Delaware’s mission is to raise private funds for allocation to member

agencies with meal delivery programs. By providing both financial and human resources, they ensure uninterrupted delivery of meals to senior Delawareans in the comfort of their homes. The organization has several event and fundraising campaigns that run each year, all throughout the three counties in Delaware.

Stock Up For Seniors on December 10, 2011

Our delivery volunteers are critical to the Meals On Wheels Delaware program and vary in age and occupation. Some have full-time jobs, whereas others are retired and simply volunteer their time to help others. The organization relies strongly on community volunteerism because if it weren’t for these volunteers, the meals would not be delivered. In most cases, the volunteers create relationships with the meal recipients and for many seniors, the volunteers are the only ones they see or speak to during the day. The organization’s volunteers don’t just deliver the meals; they care for these homebound seniors and strive to make a personal connection to show exactly how much they care. Each of the five agencies throughout Delaware seek volunteers through local businesses, churches and the community.

The Hidden Costs of Renting

If someone you know is still renting, let them know whatthey’re missing out on!Opportunity Costs - When you rent, youlose out on the chance of equity – whichcan mean an increase in your home’s value.Plus, even in a down market, it can alsomean never having the chance of owningthe place you live free and clear.

Income taxes - If you earn above a certain salary, theincome taxes you’re paying as a renter will besubstantially higher than if you owned a home and coulddeduct your property taxes andmortgage interest.

Storage - It’s not uncommon for tenants with smallapartments to also pay for storage space, withoutcalculating that expense into their “housing” budget.

Costs of improving the property - Long-term renters maypaint, replace the flooring, and do other improvements tomake the place livable. But since it’s not technically “their”home, when they do move out, all the cash they invested islost. In fact, some landlords may require them to pay orforfeit deposit money to bring the place back to itsoriginal, neutral décor.

Lost deposits - Anyone who has rented more than a coupleof apartments is well aware of the chances of losing someor all of your security deposit, no matter how well you carefor your home.

Other unexpected costs of renting…• Laundry: if using a washer and dryer at a local

laundromat costs $1.50 per load, than washing 20loads of laundry each month would cost a household about $720 a year – that’s the price for buying aninexpensive washing machine.

• Parking: while some rentals include parking, this usually isn’t the case, especially in a major metro area. Themedian monthly parking rate is $153.79 – which adds up to a pretty penny after a year.

• Frivolous spending: though this really depends on where you live, urban renters for example, are more inclined to spend frivolously on dining out.
