JOHNSON CONTINUES FIRST-YEAR SUCCESS Tyler Johnson, a Calder Trophy finalist as NHL Rookie of the Year, is off to a fast start in his first IIHF World Championship. He has four points (1-3) in three games to lead the U.S. He posted two assists vs. Belarus and the game-winning goal plus an assist against Switzerland. Additionally, he has been Team USA’s top faceoff man, winning 61% of his draws. PENALTY KILL PICKS UPTeam USA has not allowed a power-play goal in the last two games. It killed five penalties against Russia and another five versus Switzerland. Overall, the U.S. penalty kill rate of 91.7% (11-for-12) is third-best in the tournament.

FIRST LINE PRODUCTIONThree goals and five assists have come from the trio of Brock Nelson (1-1=2), Tyler Johnson (1-3=4) and Craig Smith (1-1=2). They have posted two of the team’s four power-play goals.
POWER PLAY PROWESSThe U.S. was unable to capitalize on its six power plays against Russia. With a success rate of 23.5%, Team USA ranks fourth in the tournament. Team USA was 1-for-5 against the Swiss, with Craig Smith’s marker tying the game 2-2 early in the third period. Against Belarus, Brock Nelson, Jacob Trouba and Jake Gardiner scored on the man-advantage.
FRESH LEGSTeam USA’s two youngest players, defensemen Jacob Trouba and Seth Jones, lead the team in ice time. Trouba has averaged 23:03 per game, while Jones is at 22:35. Split up during five-on-five play, the duo plays together on top U.S. power-play unit.
TRACKING TROUBATwenty-year old Jacob Trouba notched the 19th and 20th points of his international career by scoring twice against Belarus. He has nine goals and 11 assists in 36 IIHF contests. In five previous IIHF events he has won three gold medals -- 2011 & 2012 Men’s Under-18 World Championship, 2013 World Junior Championship -- and a bronze medal -- 2013 Men’s World Championship. He also competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship.
IIHF GOOD TO GAUDREAU In his first IIHF Men’s World Championship contest, Johnny Gaudreau tallied a game-high three points (1-2) against Belarus. At the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, Gaudreau led the tournament with seven goals and he finished with nine points as Team USA won the gold medal.
CAPTAINS AMERICAJustin Abdelkader is serving as cap-tain of the 2014 U.S. National Team. He is playing in his second Men’s World Championship (2012).
Craig Smith, who is playing on his fourth straight U.S. Men’s National Team, will serve as a full-time alter-nate captain. Colin McDonald and Tim Stapleton will split the role of Team USA’s second alternate captain. McDonald will wear an ‘A’ when the U.S. wears white, and Stapleton will don an ‘A’ when the U.S. wears blue. FIRST TIMERS FIND SUCCESSFourteen of 20 forwards and defense-men made their U.S. Men’s National Team debuts versus Belarus. Jake Gardiner, Johnny Gaudreau, Colin McDonald and Brock Nelson each scored a goal. Tallying assists were Danny DeKeyser, Jimmy Hayes, Kevin Hayes and Tyler Johnson (2). Gaudreau also had a pair of assists.
2013 MEN’S WORLDS RECAPThe 2013 U.S. Men’s National Team (6-1-0-3, W-OTW-OTL-L) captured the bronze medal in Stockholm, Sweden, earning Team USA’s first medal since 2004. After placing third in the prelim-inary round, the U.S. topped Russia, 8-3, in the quarterfinals before falling to Switzerland, 3-0, in the semifinals. Team USA bounced back to defeat Fin-land, 3-2, in a shootout highlighted by Alex Galchenyuk’s heroics. Overall, captain Paul Stastny led the team with seven goals and 15 points. Craig Smith notched a team-best 10 assists and had 14 points. Goalie John Gibson had a 3-1-0-1 record, 1.56 GAA, .951 SV% and one shutout.
2013 RETURNEESJeff Petry, Craig Smith, Tim Stapleton and Jacob Trouba were members of the 2013 U.S. Men’s National Team that won the bronze medal in Stockholm, Sweden, by topping Finland, 3-2, in a shootout. Smith led Team USA with 10 assists, while his 14 points were second-best on the squad. Stapleton chipped in two goals and three assists. Trouba had a goal and two helpers. Petry did not record a point.
MEN’S WORLDS VETERANSNine players are IIHF Men’s World Championship veterans. Of particu-lar note are Craig Smith, who has played in a team-high 21 Men’s
World Championship games, and Tim Thomas, who is participating in his sev-enth tournament. CALDER TROPHY FINALISTTyler Johnson is one of three finalists for the NHL’s Calder Memorial Trophy in 2013-14. He tallied 24 goals for the Tampa Bay Lightning, tying for most by a rookie this season. Johnson’s 50 points (24-26) ranked third among first-year NHL players. He would be the first American to claim the Calder Trophy since Patrick Kane in 2007-08. Johnson tallied a pair of assists for Team USA in its 6-1 win vs. Belarus on Friday.
BROTHERS HAYESBrothers Jimmy (24) and Kevin (22) Hayes are teammates for just the sec-ond time of their careers. The duo from Dorchester, Mass., played at Boston College together during the 2010-11 season. Jimmy represented Team USA at the 2007 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship (silver medal) and 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship, while Kevin is making is Team USA debut. Furthermore, they are cousins of for-mer NHLers Keith Tkachuk and Tom Fitzgerald.

TEAM USA COACHING STAFFPeter Laviolette is serving as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team for the third time. Also, he served as an assistant coach for the United States during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, where he helped Team USA to the semifinals. Joe Sacco is serving as an assis-tant coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team for the third time (2009, 2010). In 2013, Sacco was head coach of the U.S. squad that won the bronze medal at the IIHF Men’s World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden, and Helsinki, Finland. Phil Housley is serving as an assis-tant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team for the second year in a row and third time overall. Last year, he helped Team USA win the bronze medal in Stockholm, Sweden, and Helsinki Finland. He was also an assistant in 2011. Don Granato is an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team for the first time.
