Proposed Service and Description

Draining and Fertilizer in the Philippines

Page 4: Team R.I.C.E.

• Purpose:o To Decrease Methane Emission and Increase Rice Yield

• Problem: o Increasing Methane Emission due to Wetland Rice Fields o Philippines is a Large Rice Importer o Recent decrease in Filipino Rice Yield

• Need: o To Improve the Philippine’s Rank in the Rice Industry

• Solution:o Mid-Season Drainage System and Provide Ammonium Sulfate Fertilizer

Our Company’s Service

Page 5: Team R.I.C.E.

Mid-Season Drainage System:• Allow for shallow flooding• Drain water for 7 days to stress the soil

Benefits:• Lower Methane Emission • Water Conservation• Higher Rice Yield

Disadvantage:• Production of Nitrous Oxide

Limitations

Water and Money

Page 15: Team R.I.C.E.

Water

• Evapotranspiration, seepage, preparation, and percolation• Advantage: less water needed, less methane is produced( temp,

rice), less water pollution then traditional methods• Disadvantages: weeding required, higher quality water is

needed, increases the susceptibility of certain diseases for certain types of rice

Page 16: Team R.I.C.E.

Money

• Advantages: less gas for water pumps, less water needed, able to utilize some of the remaining structure

• Disadvantages: more water management equipment is needed, more land to produce equal rice

Overcoming Problems

• Government support for environmental betterment• Genetic modification of rice

– More productive, more drought resistant, disease defiant– These modifications could eliminate the majority of limitations

• Superior fertilizers– Fertilizers that are better adapted to this form of farming
