HITS OCALA Reviews
Overall I believe it was a very well run event. The two others that com-
peted in the event thought the same. Josh Gohman competed in the Olympic
(1500m swim; 40k bike; 10k run) and Todd Nord competed in the Sprint (750m
swim; 20k bike; 5k run) with me. The swim was an out and back for the sprint
two laps for the Olympic . But let me go back to the beginning. We showed up at
packet pick up and it was run as good as any I have been to then walked around
and through the transition area. HITS used the towers for the run, bike and swim
finish. It looked like what I expect to see at a 70.3 or a full ironman. They also
used transition boxes as opposed to the X's with a pole between them. I had a seat
with my number and name on it. So all that pre-race stress of setting up your AO
was not there. I knew where I would be and what my AO was. It made me feel
like I was in a major league race. We drove the bike

Team PsychTRI TOP # 1 Purchase for Race Day
Triathlon Competition, Cycling or Spinning
course and it looked like it would be a
nice ride (more hilly than this flat-
landed from Tampa is use to). We had a
racers meeting that talked about the
whole race and told us of changes, one
was that the run was no longer a loop
but out 1.55 and back and the other was
that it would start at 0715 for the Sprint
(all males then all females 3 minutes
later) and then the Olympic would start
at 0745.
When we got back to the Hotel, we
found that we had tritats numbers. We
are all numbered up before we showed
up in the morning. I set up my transition
area and did my pre-race prep and rit-
ual.
The swim was an in water start, you
walked to the 1st of 4 swim buoy. It was
a shallow swim I could stand up to
about the 3rd race buoy. It was wetsuit
legal but the water was not cold and you
could have swum without. Then when
you finished the swim you ran maybe
100 yards under the Swim tower into
T1.
The one area I thought might be a prob-
lem would be the bike in and out as it
was the same tower. But the issue I was
worried about never showed it face to
me as I was done with the bike before
the Olympic swimmers were not even
out of the water yet. The bike was a
good loop and it was open but it had
plenty of officers and volunteers to keep
you save. The course did show some
weakness in my training. I have not
trained on hills enough. As I came in for
T2 I had no bottle neck and got right in.
As I headed out for the run I realized
very fast that I broke the number one
rule on race day. Don’t do something
new that you have not trained with be-
fore. Mine was my shoes. I had a new
pair of shoes that I had run with a cou-
ple of times but I changed out the in-
soles and did not try them on. My
shoes were very tight to the point my
feet were cramping up and I had not
even run 500 yards. The run was a trail
run, on dirt. It was not like running on
the beach but the dirt was loose.

the HITS for there series awards each age
group so I was the fastest for my age
group (I was in an age race of two… lol)
and everyone got a finishers medal. They
also have an open distance and both the
half and full distances. This is a USAT
race and will be sending the 5yrs age
groups for the USAT overall ranking. If I
were going to be here next year I would
do this race again. I know Josh is plan-
ning on going next year and might even go
to the Naples race.
This race event review was gra-
ciously provided by one of our new
members, Russ Price who came to
join the team for free as he is an active
military member currently stationed at
Mac Dill. His first experience with
Team Psych was at Race for the Booty
Triathlon. Once again, thank you

The HITS 70.3 triathlon in Ocala this
weekend was outstanding. I had the
best race of my life and I was really
happy with how well the race was or-
ganized. Many thanks have to go to
the people who put this race on. From
the time I picked up my registration to
when I left after the race the people
were fantastic. It was great to meet
Mark H. Wilson in person, and he was
always smiling and very helpful to
anyone who needed anything from
him or had questions. Then there are
the Star Exiner Walters clones. The
Hits series has several clones of Star.
:) They have one for registration, one
for the swim exit, one for transition,
and at least one on the run course run-
ning a water stop. They are every-
where, and always happy and helpful.
Joe N (? I'm sorry I can't remember
Joes last name because I wanted to
friend him on FB, but I can't find
him) was also fantastic. On Saturday
when we had our mandatory bike
drop off Joe had no problem with us
bringing our bikes on race morning if
we wanted to because it was probably
going to rain. Which it did on Satur-
day evening. Literally everyone you
saw associated with the race always
seemed to be cheery. I can’t say
enough good things about them.
The race. I went into this race feel-
ing undertrained and overweight by
about 10 lbs. It’s been a rough 3
months and my training suffered so I
didn’t have high expectations for this
one. I figured I’d give it my best shot
and be happy with how-
ever it

turned out. It turns out I beat my
previous personal best by 23 min-
utes and had my best race ever.
The swim. The swim was in lake
Weir. I much prefer saltwater
events, but as far as freshwater
swims go, this was the best one for
me. It was in an actual lake and
not a retention pond or farm live-
stock pond. And the water wasn’t
black. The water temp was in the
low 70’s so it was nice. The swim
course was a straight out and back
1.2 miles which I liked. The fewer
turns the better if you ask me. My
time was 40:03, which was a bit
slow for me, but not too slow.
The only suggestion I would have
would be to request wetsuit strip-
ers. For some reason I had trouble
getting my wetsuit off this year.
Transition 1. Something I really
liked about the way HITS has tran-
sition is that everyone had a stool.
I’ve never seen that before and as
it turned out I needed it to get my
wetsuit off. Transition was set up
and run very well by Joe and com-
pany. My T1 time was 3:01 amaz-
ingly considering my wetsuit prob-
lems.
The Bike. The bike course was
OK overall. The sheriffs depart-
ment did a good job at the intersections
they were in. The course wasn’t rough
except for a few short sections. The
course had rolling hills which were just
fine. I was able to do the entire course
in the big ring, so the hills were fine.
The traffic was my only concern. There
was more traffic than I’m accustomed
to on this race. I think it’s probably be-
cause of the size. Ironman events have
upwards of 2500 racers and they close
off entire lanes of traffic for the bike.
This race had about 110 people, so we
were spread out so thin that most driv-
ers probably didn’t even know there
was a race going on. I only had to stop
once, which considering that it was a
major intersection on a highway it’s not
so bad. There were stretches that we
rode on the shoulder of the highway
with semi-trucks passing that I wish we
didn’t have to do.
If it’s at all possi-
ble to make the
course a little far-
ther removed
from traffic then
that would be my
suggestion. I was
also chased by
two dogs, but that’s not to be unex-
pected from time to time. One actually
caught me on the heal of my shoe, but

no harm done. I wonder, and this is a
serious question, if we are allowed to
carry mace on these races? My strat-
egy on the bike for this race was to
take it easy and save something for
the run. In my previous two 70.3
races I went too hard on the bike and
ended up paying for it dearly on the
run. This time I sacrificed about 9
minutes or so on the bike and it paid
off big time on the run. My bike
time was 2:49:42. A little conserva-
tive for me, but it paid off on the run.
Transition 2, uneventful and easy.
1:26.
The Run. Ah the dreaded run. My
nemesis! I felt great. Better than
I’ve ever felt for the run. So that was
good. I started at about a 10 minute
mile pace, and figured if I could just
keep that up then I’d do way better
than my previous 70.3 races. The
first 4 miles of the run was in sand. I
will make no bones about it. I do not
like running in the sand at all. But
we all had to do it for this race. Also
it was in a wooded area so it wasn’t
blisteringly hot, so that was nice.
The run course then went to asphalt
and was only slightly hilly. It was a
decent run course. They had cones
set out to designate that it was a run
course. A couple cars did pass my
very close from behind. I’m not sure
how they might set it up, but it would
be nice if we were always running into
traffic on the course. It was an out and
back course so we could see oncoming
traffic on the way out, but on the way
back the traffic was to our backs which
is unnerving. There was plenty of wa-
ter on the course and the people were
awesome, so organizationally the run
was set up very well. One of my major
goals for this season was to do a 70.3
and not walk at all on the run. I
achieved that goal! My run time was
2:18:13. Over 20 minutes faster than
my previous 70.3 races. In November
of 2010 that was my stand alone half
marathon run time, so I’m ecstatic with
that run time.
So my overall time was 5:52:27. My
previous best time for a 70.3 was
6:15:43. A second major goal of mine
this season was to do a half in less than
6 hours. Goal achieved! I’m still
pinching myself over this race and how
well it went. And again the staff at this
race really did everything they could to
make sure everyone had the best possi-
ble race, so thank you for making it all
possible. I’m absolutely going to do
this race again next year.
