    I. Discovery

The GE team provided an excellent brief abouttheir brand, product line, consumer insights, and purchasing data. After combing through

the given information, we realized we neededto do some research of our own. So off wewent to conduct eld observations.

    II. Develop

With the data collected from the discoveryphase and the implementation of afnitymapping, we identied the categories for

potential design problems. At this point wealso dened our target market and developedpersonas to guide solutions for the deployphase.

How can we began to answer the problemquestions with design solutions? and How dowe create these solutions according to ourtarget consumer?

    III. Deploy

After researching we began to formulateconcepts that would solve the problems weidentied for our persona. We attempted to

solve these problems in a variety of waysbefore narrowing them down and consolidatingthe ideas into more complete appliances.

These phases area strategy that webased on for ourcreative process.

DISCOVERYResearch - Primary Research IWhy do consumers buy certainproducts from the samemanufacturer?

    For example:Apple Products

Why do people buy multiple products fromApple? There are more advantages when people usemultiple apple products than just using asingle machine. One Apple ID to rule them all(all apps andmedia that is) The best way to get yourpurchases on all iOS devices is to use a sharedApple ID for them all. Create a family AppleID if youre starting fr esh, or designate t hemost used (or oldest) Apple ID as the king.Connecting each device to that shared AppleID will allow all future purchases to be shared apps, music, b ooks, newsstand magazines, etc.

Dispersed throughout Savannah, Georgia, ourclass scoured a broad spectrum of placesto study retail environments and layouts, consumer interactions with product andstore representatives, and the overall buying

    experience.

The retail and hospitality sectors we observedincluded apparel and accessories, appliances, car dealerships, cellular phone providers, department stores, entertainment, electronics, hardware and home improvement, restaurants, and toy stores. We also identied trends inthese markets to see shifts in kitchen design, materials, touch points, and technology.

Our research also extended to understandingthe consumer demographic. Our goal wasto determine historical moments and iconicinnovations that may have inuenced not onlyconsumerslifestyles, but their patterns indecision making as well. This information was

found to be very useful for creating personasin the dene phase.

    Previous Kitchen Experience

    A day in the life

As a substitute teacher, Jennifer often has days to herself. When she isnt out running erran ds, Jennifer is f ree to nurtureher growing passion: cooking.

Jennifer has always been a decent cook, but with the risingpopularity of cooking shows and various potluck events for herkids, she has an urge to improve her skills. She has all sorts ofcooking gadgets that take up a lot of space and are difcult toclean, but she treasures them because they are the tools thatenable her culinary adventures. Today, she is trying out a newrecipe she found online.

Jennifer brings her laptop into the kitchen to follow recipes. She likes having it around to look up cooking terminology andtips, but often gets distracted by social networking sites whileawaiting the next step in her recipe. When her kids get home, the distractions only get worse.

Jennifer and her son, Daniel, live with her boyfriend, Geoff, andhis ve-year-old, Megan. Geoff spends a lot of time at work, soJennifer is often left with the kids until late in the evening.Megan in particular seems to do everything she can to getJennifers attention. This oft en leads to pots boilin g over andlots of smoke. Burnt-on food and water on the cook top andloud smoke alarms have a way of discouraging an aspiring chef.Nevertheless, dinner always makes its way to the table - andonto Facebook as well.

    DEVELOPDemographics - PersonaQ+A

We discovered areas in the kitchen that couldbe made into a better experience. As well asexperience we found design aesthetics andtechnology we could draw inspiration from aswe implemented our ideas.

From development stage of ourpersona we came up with thesequestions:

How can cooking be more fun?

How can I cook like a pro mom?

How can I cook a wider variety of foods easily?

How can I make prep and cleaning easier?

    APPLIANCE FAMILY

Our appliances all feature a triangularaesthetic. This design keeps yourkitchen looking sharp while reinventingthe way we utilize space. Byseparating the input dials and theinformation read outs onto opposingtriangles, an engaging, asymmetric cutis created. The new negative spaceadds to the windows which makes iteasier and more aesthetically appealingto view food. The triangles also helpus achieve more ergonomic angles,

and create an opportunity for a newinteraction with materials.

By leaning the controls triangle backslightly, the surface is at a morecomfortable angle to the eye, and thefeatures are more legible. Startingto bridge the gap in the human tocontrols interaction, the design evolvedfurther into something tangible.

Keeping in mind child-safe kitchens, ourkeep awayconcept providesaesthetic, built-in child safety featuresthat give adults a tactile experience. The controls are covered by a resilientskin soft and smooth to the touch,

durable and well equipped for the kitchen. When in use, the controls are raised againstthe skin, revealing their form and function.Back-lighting, graphics and subtle feedbackcreate ease of use and help to completethis sensory interaction. Intriguing foradults can seem enticing to children aswell. To help keep everyone in the familysafe, the controls recede and the skinbecomes a at surface when appliances arenot in use. This tells children tha t theresnothing for them to play with, and servesas a visual to everyone that the applianceis off.

The handles on all of our appliances alsofollow the angles from the opposingtriangles. This creates a handle bar whichaccommodates both left and right handedusers.

OvenOur in-wall oven is designed withaccuracy, comfort and safety inmind. The oven door can performtwo, separate operations: venting/broiling and lifting. For venting orbroiling, the handle can be pushedin and the door will tilt slightly likea regular oven. To open the door, simply push the handle upward, andit lifts up, never exposing the userto the hot side of the door. The interior of the oven is coatedwith a blue enamel which speedsup cook time s due to the c olorsheat absorption rate.

a slight push, creating a unifying space-saverbetween your hood and cook top, housing all of

your frequently used spices. This shelf can easilybe slid back into the hood to prevent oil splashesand grease build up.Closest to the center of the hood is the real-time temperature (RTT) infrared sensor. Thiscan tell you the temperature of any part of yourcook top surface at any time. Whether your panis still heating up or the res a temperatur e dropbecause you just added something to the pot,

youll know and be ready to compensate thanks

HoodThe hood has a simple exterior, but housesgreat features. The space between the innerand outer walls leads to the fan which createssuction, pulling smoke and odors into a ventthat has been hidden from sight. This perimeterventing system pulls in smoke from anywhere onthe cook top and also opens up the center ofthe hood for other tools to help you become abetter home chef. The rst thing included is a pull-down shelf.

This hidden compartment lowers smoothly with

to this built-in helper. The next feature is a black smoke detector. Ifsomething starts to burn, the smoke will triggerthe vent to turn on automatically and, if syncedwith the GE cook top, will automatically start toreduce heat of the targeted cooking tile. Thisdetector can help save your meal as well as yourcooking enthusiasm by reacting before blaringhome smoke alarms go off.A camera is also included in the hood to takeaerial photos of your perfectly prepared meal fortutorials, making recipes or bragging rights.

Electromagnetic RackBy using Electromagnets to adjustthe height of the oven racks, theuser is given an innite rangeof placement for their racks.Electromagnets work simply bycharging a particular portionof a track so that it becomesmagnetized. When the magnetizedsection changes, the rack- with itsmagnets- moves to realign withthe newly magnetized section oftrack. The benet to this is thatit only requires electricity to run, eliminating the need of outsidematerials and periodic replacement. In case of black out, the oven ispreprogrammed to hold enoughpower to gently lower the racksto the bottom of the oven so thatthey dont fall unexp ectedly.

Superconductor RackSuper conductors are implemented in the designas a way to accurately manipulate height of rackswithin the oven. Controllable superconductors whenaccurately modied through the use of nitrogencompounds are programed to both attract and

repel magnetic substances; this specic engineeringproduces what we often refer to as levitation. When the amount of negative force to a magnet isdecreased, an object will oat lower to the surfacein which it travels. These elements in conjunctionwith a controlled environment such as the interiorof an oven will produce stable, innite lift, able tosupport any given weight applied by the placing offood.
