TEAGUES BRIDGE PRIMARY THE BEATING HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to start my newsletter by welcoming you all back after the Easter

break. It’s nice to see the children back in school, behaving well and keen to

learn. Their behaviour has been much improved this week.

I am sure you will all agree that it’s nice to see some aspects of normality

returning to our lives. All shops are now opening, gyms and swimming pools

etc. We must still be cautious and follow all the rules; we still have all the

Covid-19 restrictions in school and we are still expected to remain in bubbles,

ensuring everyone in our community is safe. Please remember to wear your

face masks and adhere to the socially distancing rules when dropping off and

picking up.

I am not sure when the time will arrive where parents can return to entering

through the gates and enjoying parent lunches and open afternoons, but we

are heading in the right direction. We have also gained some good practise

from the Pandemic and some things that have worked well, may well stay.

We have been talking to the children about life before Covid and during

Covid; there are many of the new systems that they like and that work well

for them, so we will continue to listen to the children, and of course the

parents when we are able to open up our school to the community once again.

Dates and Events coming up this term:

29th May ~ Swimming every Thursday for KS2.

3rd May ~ Bank Holiday Monday

6th May ~ School is closed as it is being used as a Polling Station. Work

will be set for all children on Purple Mash.

28th May ~ Break up for May half term (One week).

7th June ~ Return to school

20th July ~ Break up for the summer holidays

21st July ~ PD day.

Reminders:

• All children should be wearing school shoes and not trainers. Our school uni-

form policy is black shoes. If there is a genuine reason your child needs to

wear trainers for a period of time, please write in the communication book or

e-mail the office.

• Traffic issues outside school are becoming worse by the day; we all need to

care a little more about the safety of the children and each other. Please do

not speed down the crescent. Please do not pull into the staff carpark to re-

verse. Please be patient in a morning and don’t park on the yellow zig-zags;

they are there to keep this space safe for your children to cross the road.

Enforcement officers will be attending site to monitor the traffic and I am

in talks with the traffic team at the local authority, looking at ways to

change this because it does need to change - it is not safe outside the school

some mornings. Please, if we all do our bit, it can be safe and calm.

• Please ensure you pay for your child's school dinner via Parent Pay. If you do

not pay, you will be contacted by the school office. If you don’t have a Parent

Pay account, please ring the school office and Miss Powell will be very happy

to assist you in setting this up.

• Currently on a Friday, we don’t have Miss Powell in the office, so if possible,

avoid ringing on a Friday. There will be a member of staff manning the

phones, but if it can wait until Monday, all the better.

• Please remember to record messages for the teacher in the communication

book.

SWIMMING KS2 Swimming lessons from school will be starting for base 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 during the summer term. This is great news and I know the children are really excited to go.

Children will need their swimming costume/trunks and their towel. Children will not be allowed to use the showers and strict COVID-19 rules will be followed whilst at the pool.

Children will need to be able to dry themselves and get dressed.

Each class will have an allocated time every Thursday, starting 29th April (if the LA have secured a coach company to take children to and from the school).

Children can wear a swimming hat if they wish and they can take goggles.

Please see times below for each base.

Can I please urge all parents to check their child's hair. It would seem that we have headlice in school (oh no, that I have not missed). Hair needs to be checked regularly and treated if children have headlice. Please read the in-formation below.

Base 1 have really enjoyed being back at school after Easter! This week we have been carrying on with our topic ‘Why Do Ladybirds Have Spots?’ Our story at the moment is ’The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

In maths this week we have been looking at the number 13 and have started to look at symmetrical patterns.

In Expressive Arts and Design this week we have been making symmetrical butterflies. We worked with a partner to make sure both of our butterfly's were the same.

This week in Literacy, children have been looking at recounts. We had a mini sports day as part of our memorable experience and children really enjoyed taking part. Pupils have been using adverbs of time to describe their memorable experience and sequenced the key events.

In Maths this week, we have been learning about counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. All the children took part in a pre-unit assessment and have been doing lots of practical work. We have been using different objects to help with our counting with numbers up to 50.

It has been a lovely first week back after the Easter break.

Mrs Jones and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories about everyone’s Easter and all pupils have come back to school eager to learn.

In Maths this week we have been learning about fractions. We have focused on 1/4 and 1/3 this week and pupils are beginning to understand how many equal parts different fractions have. We have used cubes to make 4 equal groups and then drawn this into their books to understand that a fraction is sharing.

In literacy this week pupils have learnt how to use expanded noun phrases and have began to write our class story. We have changed the wild things into mermaids and a beach grows in Max’s room instead.

In theme, our topic continues to be ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. We have been com-pleting jigsaw this week and discussing relationships with families and friends. We have discussed what is a good friend and what is a bad friend and why that might be the case.

We have also started our computing topic: coding. Pupils have been using purple mash software to help them debug software and create their own.

Literacy

In Literacy we have began working on our non-fiction genre of a discussion text. Our focus book is called A Planet Full of Plastic. Children listened to the story which taught them all about plastic; what it is used for, how it is made, it’s benefits and problems in causes too our environment. So children were able to recall key information from the text, we created actions to remind us. We will need to use the information later in the week when we have a class debate around the question, “Should we use plastic?”

Maths

This week we began our topic on Fractions. To begin children learnt that a frac-tion is an equal part of a whole. We used Numicon to explore the different ways we can divide an amount/whole into equal or unequal parts.

Science

In Science we discussed, is a city is a habitat? Children learnt the difference between urban and rural areas and learnt that pigeons, foxes, rats and squirrels are some of the organ-isms that live in cities.

Friday Awards Some children in base 7 have been working hard to gain their pen licence. This enables

them to move from writing in pencil to writing in pen. They receive a pen licence certificate and an achievement badge. An enormous well done to these children. It is

not easy to achieve this award.

Children's Laureate, Cressida Cowell, has written a letter asking the prime minister to allocate £100m a year to help school libraries. The writer said she wanted "something hopeful to come out of the darkness of the pandemic. If you want to level up, libraries have to be a key part of that." She had said she would like funding to be guaranteed in particular for primary school libraries in the way that it is for other areas such as sport. The letter has also been signed by former Children's Laureates including Michael Rosen, Quentin Blake and Jacqueline Wilson.

Things to talk about at home…

Do you have a library at your school? Currently 1 in every 8 schools doesn’t have a library, does this surprise you?

Some schools have been creative with their library, for example, using an old bus! If you could create your own library, what might it look like?
