The procession then made

its way along to the War Memorial and the Miners’ War Memorial where the laying of flower wreaths took place. The final stop was made at the Wheatsheaf for refreshments before the coaches left for Durham and the Big Meeting.A great time was had by all at the Gala before return-ing to the Sports and Social Club, where a sumptuous buffet and entertainment had been provided for everyone to enjoy.

People in County Durham can now record and report noise disturbance via their mobile phones, thanks to an innovative new app.Durham County Council has become the first local authority in the North East to use mobile phone tech-nology in this way, having launched the Noise App.Residents who make a noise complaint to the council are provided with a user name and password, enabling them to register to use the app. Only those with an existing complaint are given the log in details. Users can then make recordings of any noise disturbance they are expe-riencing and submit them

instantly to the council. Officers from the author-ity’s nuisance action team can then use noise record-ings alongside traditional diary evidence to allow them to make a more informed assessment on whether a complaint con-stitutes a statutory noise nuisance. Evidence gathered via the Noise App has already con-tributed to the seizure of a sound bar, hi-fi system and several speakers. Joanne Waller, the coun-cil’s head of environment, health and consumer protection, said: “The introduction of the Noise App provides residents with an additional way

Noise App helps residents tackle noise disturbance

to get us evidence of the disturbance they are ex-periencing and allows our officers to provide a fast and efficient resolution to problems.“The fact we have already been able to seize a sound bar, hi-fi system and speakers thanks to this app shows how valuable it will be in our efforts to protect our residents from exces-sive noise.”The Noise App can be downloaded onto an iPhone or Android device via App Store or Google Play. Students from Ferryhill Business and Community College are presented with their award.

Students crowned champions of flagship enterprise competition

Talented students from Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College have won a top award with their invention of a board game for Durham.Students from the school were crowned champions of the Future Business Magnates (FBM) competi-tion – run by Business Durham, the economic development company for County Durham working on behalf of Durham County Council. This year, judges were looking for a product or service which could change the way we live or work.FBEC came up with a board game based in Durham entitled Fear the Wear. St Bede’s School, in Lanchester, came second with Connected Motion a dynamo skateboard that enables the rider to charge a mobile device, while Barnard Castle School came third with their in-tegrated housing solution for third world countries, MicroHood.Kevin Brennan, headteach-er of FBEC, said the com-petition gave students a glimpse of the real business world: “This has been one of the most important ex-periences for them in their educational career,” he said. “It’s a credit to all the staff and students involved and we’re very proud of them. They’ve thrived working with their business

mentors over the years and they couldn’t take part without their support.”More than 30 leading lights from the business world, including Thorn Lighting, Dyer Engineering, Ebac, Hydram, Steelcraft, Atom Bank and Durham Univer-sity, supported this year’s competition, partnering the 20 school teams and judging the six challenges of the programme.Dr Gary Thompson, managing director of Jagdesign, based at NETPark, in Sedgefield, said it was great to give something back to Ferryhill – his former school.“‘If we can encourage the business leaders of tomorrow and support them through their journey into the business commu-nity then we all succeed.“It was good to work with some very talented young adults as they learned about business. The FBM project is a prime example of how connecting with industry can be rewarding for all participants.”The theme for this year’s competition was Con-necting County Durham, whether it was thinking how County Durham connects to the rest of the world or connecting up ideas to come up with amazing inventions.Over the last eight months, pupils aged 12 and 13 worked with their business

mentor to turn their bright ideas into produce a service or product.Sarah Slaven, Business Durham Business Devel-opment Director, said: “Connections are really im-portant in business and as the students have shown, connecting up ideas in different ways or applying them to different scenarios can lead to great inven-tions. The end results of our competition have been fantastic and the students have shown yet again, just how bright, talented and inventive they are.”Simon Henig, leader of Durham County Council, said: “It is fantastic to see such innovation and imagination coming from the young people in our county. We are proud that here in Durham, schools from across the county are engaging with our business sector in this way and we are delighted that Business Durham is continuing to foster their enquiring minds as part of the Future Business Magnates compe-tition.“We hope that some of these young people will feel inspired to go onto careers in some of these industries and that we may well see them go on to even brighter futures here in the county with the companies they have been working with as part of this competition.”

Riley and Tyler rewarded as Key Community Champions

On Thursday 29th June a group of students from Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College attended an awards ceremony at Newcastle Civic Centre. The event was held in cel-ebration of inspirational young people from the North East, as well as 25 years of ‘The Key’ project. Riley Gibbons and Tyler Jackson, Year 8 FBEC students, formed a group called ‘Boys R Us’ along with some friends in which the gained £250 funding to host bubble football for their peers in year 8.

They were nominated in the category of Key Com-munity Champions. These are Key groups which have demonstrated a significant community benefit in their Key projects. Out of 400 projects, 25 were invited to the awards night, with only 7 groups being nominated in this category. The Ferryhill students were awarded Runners Up 2017, beating off other fan-tastic projects. A surprise award followed, with Miss Langdale being nominated for The Key

Facilitator of the Year award. The Key described her work with schools and youth centres as chal-lenging yet rewarding and praised her efforts for guiding over 40 young people through The Key successfully. All nominees were praised for the phenomenal support given to encourage and support young people. Miss Langdale celebrated with 2nd place. “Congratulations and well done to everyone involved!,” said a school spokesperson.

escape a one roomed homeless hostel in London is to accept a flat some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy, now played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain. The film will be shown on Friday 21st July at 6pm.The film is for adults only and will cost £3 for a member and £4 for a non member (£1 to become a Film Club member) and includes refreshments.

A new mobile app to educate people on cyber security has been launched by Durham Constabulary. In the wake of a string of high-profile cyber-attacks, the Force is keen to help tech users better under-stand how to stay safe and secure online. The app, called Blue Lights Discovery, has been launched in conjunction with creative company Blue Lights Digital. It delivers interactive modules filled with cyber-crime history, threats, statistics and guidelines, all designed to make key knowledge available and accessible at all times.

Chief Constable Mike Barton said: “We have all seen the increased rate in which these cyber-threats are worming their way into our devices, which means that now more than ever, it’s imperative that we know how to protect our-selves.“Keeping these threats at bay is achieved through minimising risk and knowing what precautions to take, and that’s exactly what this app helps users to achieve.”The app is available on both the Apple Store and Google Play Store, as well as being accessible via Blue Lights Digital’s own website.

Dear Editor,

On behalf of us all at the Ferryhill Banner Group we would like to thank everyone who turned out for the Miners Banner Parades on Friday Evening in Ferryhill, and then on Saturday morning at Ferryhill Station and into Durham for the Annual Durham Miners Gala.

Very special thanks to Ferryhill Town Band who were excellent on both days and gave an outstanding performance outside the County Hotel, much to the delight of the dignitaries in attendance on the VIP balcony.

Also, we must thank Ferryhill Town Council who kindly donated funds to help fund the event on the Friday evening in Ferryhill. It was com-munity spirt at its very best and very well appreciated. Well Done Ferryhill!

Yours sincerely,

Peter Atkinson,On Behalf of the Ferryhill Banner GroupStratford Gardens, Ferryhill.

Dear Editor,

I find that Ferryhill Council has overstepping the mark by fencing off more than 50% of the park in favour of football. What will be left is a few patches of green area to walk around.

The park was dedicated by the Dean & Chapter miners for the people, not the footballers. The person writing in last week’s Chapter is right, a public meeting should be called before this is a done deal and before we are all barred from the area.

Your sincerely,Name and address withheld on request.

Dear Editor, As the governing body of Cleves Cross Primary and Nursery School we would like to congratulate all of our Year 6 pupils, parents and all our staff for their tremendous effort and determination, which has resulted in outstanding SAT results again this year.

100% of children achieved Age Related Expectations or above in both Maths and English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and 90% achieved this in Reading.

We want to wish our Year 6 pupils well on their educational journey. They have been great ambassadors for Cleves Cross Primary and Nursery School.

Yours sincerely, Cleves Cross Governing Body

The pupils of Chilton Primary School eneterd the spirit of the sponsored walk by dress-ing up in bright Hawaiian-style shirts, grass skirts and garlands.

Hawaii comes to Chilton as children take sponsored walk

On Friday 7th July, Chilton Primary Friends held a sponsored Hawaiian walk, with organising boasting that the day was ‘brilliant’. A spokesperson com-mented: “The sun shone and the pupils of Chilton Primary looked fantastic in their bright colours, grass skirts, sunglasses and Lei garlands, so well done everyone for putting together their costumes.“The line of colour walking through parts of Chilton was a sight to behold and had people coming out of their houses to see what was happening.

“The walk ended in the KS2 yard where the children took part in limbo and Hawaiian dancing and enjoyed ice pops. “There was a real buzz and fantastic atmosphere from children and staff alike.“The children were all very well behaved and a credit to the school and their families.“Chilton Primary Friends would like to thank parents, grandparents,

carers, family and friends who walked with us and to everyone who shouted and waved as we walked past, and to those who donated money on the way round.“Also thank you to two residents for the following comments: ‘It was lovely to see’ and ‘I saw them walking around the village and it made me smile.’ “We will update you next week with the total amount raised.”

like this one.”If you see anyone riding in an anti-social manner, or without the correct safety equipment, call police on the non-emergency number, 101.

FERRYHILL TOWN COUNCILJULY MEETINGS

the TA workforce - would have lost pay under the proposals.TAs also cited confusion about their new contract-ed hours as a reason for rejecting the offer.DCC claimed the new con-tracts included a ‘flexible’ 37 hours per week and 40 weeks per year, with the new additional hours expected to be included from extra-curricular work already undertaken by TAs, but many TAs reported that head teachers were insist-ing that the new hours would be timetabled. Gillian Iveson, spokesper-son for County Durham Teaching Assistant Activ-ists said: “A lot of good work has been done so it is a shame that DCC and UNISON rushed the final proposal when we were so close to achieving a good deal for everyone.“We warned that the deal would be seen as unfair and now the unions and DCC really must listen to us if they want this dispute resolved to everyone, including the council’s benefit. “The council need to stop hiding information and hiding behind confidential-ity clauses. We only have one chance to get this deal right so that the future of Durham TAs is permanently secured. “We didn’t want to go

into another summer of stress and worry but we would rather delay and achieve the right outcome than leave almost 500 col-leagues behind.”Ken Smith, Regional Official for ATL, said: “ATL members have shown that they are not prepared to accept this poor offer from Durham County Council.“We will now do all we can to support those members affected and will be ap-proaching UNISON with a view to pursuing a joint way forward.”Durham Miners’ Associa-tion, who have invited TAs to march with them for the past two years at the Durham Miners’ Gala, Europe’s largest union gathering, said: “We fully support this democratic decision and will continue to give the Durham Teaching Assistants our unwavering solidarity.“We urge the Council to take note of this and come back with an improved offer so that this dispute can be resolved fairly.”John Hewitt – Corporate Director for Resources at Durham County Council – said: “We recognise the result of the UNISON ballot. We will continue to work with the recognised trade unions to consider next steps and how we move forward.”UNISON were unavailable for comment before The Chapter went to press.

Pat & Terry Wilson celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with a donation to the MRI scanner appeal.

Golden wedding celebrations support scanner appealAt the recent celebration of their Golden Wedding anniversary, Pat and Terry Wilson, from Darlington, asked guests to make a donation to the Appeal to bring state-of-the-art MRI scanning technology to Darlington Memorial and Bishop Auckland Hospitals, in lieu of gifts - raising £530.Pat said: “We have both had MRI scans and know how useful they can be when making a diagnosis.“There’s absolutely nothing we need, and we feel very fortunate to have each other, a lovely family and, of course, our health.“So we thought it would be great to raise money for a cause that will benefit so many people from across Durham and Darlington in the future, and asked our guest to make a donation rather than give us a gift. “We’re lucky enough to have a son, daughter and five grandchildren and had a fantastic evening at Darlington Golf Club where Terry has been a member for many years. “We put donation enve-lopes on each table and our family and friends were very generous – one envelope had £100 in it!”The couple have always been involved in the com-munity, with Pat serving as a magistrate for 26 years. She has also had four children’s books pub-lished, donating royalties to UNICEF.Dr Elizabeth Loney, Clinical Director for Radiology at County Durham and Dar-lington NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are very grateful to Mr & Mrs Wilson for their generous donation. We want to bring

the very latest in scanning technology to our hospitals and MRI scans are particu-larly good at looking at soft tissues.“Tremendous advances in technology over recent years mean they can be enormously helpful in diag-nosing cancer, heart condi-tions, strokes and many other health issues. Scans can also give doctors information that previously required the patient to undergo surgery or another

invasive procedure as part of the investigation of their symptoms. “MRI scans are so useful we’re doing more of them each year. In the last year alone the number has in-creased by 11%.”If you can help fundraise for our MRI Scanner Appeal, organise an event, make a direct donation or help through volunteering to support us, please contact [email protected] or phone: 01325 743781.”
