Teaching and Learning edition
Dear Parent/ Carers.
Welcome to the second edition of our new newsletters from school that aims to give you
more information about how your child learns at school and more importantly how you
can help your child at home. This newsletter is based around Teaching and Learning. I
hope it will give you more information and improve your knowledge of school. If there
are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me for further assistance
Best Wishes.
VIP (very independent person) badges
This year we are starting to put onus on children to take responsibility
for their own learning during the school day.
When children arrive at school in the morning, they spend 10 minutes
doing ‘independence time’. During this time children can choose an ac-
tivity that will help them to learn, with the aim to raise the children’s own expectations.
These activities can include: practicing spellings or times tables; completing book tasks;
responding to teacher feedback; finishing off work from lessons or reading for pleasure.
After this time in the morning, teachers choose 4 VIP’s for the day and these children
wear a VIP badge. The badges have been a great motivator, encouraging a calm, focused
Homework grids
Following the update of our school website, each year group page
will now include a link to homework ideas. With each new topic, a
homework grid will be available that provides a list of creative ideas
for you and your child to choose from. Completing one or more of
these tasks will really help to encourage and inspire your child to
learn more about their new topic. Children really enjoy sharing
their home learning with their class too, so why not have a look on
Most children have a natural way of picking up new info — they learn
best either by listening, looking, or doing. There are many different
combinations of learning styles and it is important to note that no one
is ever just one concrete style. We all learn in a variety of ways and
each time your child is just “not getting it” you may need to re-evaluate
and approach it in a different way. Take the quiz below to reveal how
your child's brain works best,
1. You let your child pick out one toy at a pound store. Which are they most likely to choose?
a) Pencil crayons b) Play microphone or headphones c) Hula hoop or football
2. If your child could only pick one after-school activity, which would they choose?
a) Art lessons b) Music lessons c) Sports or drama lessons
3. You’re out to dinner and there’s a 10-minute wait. How does your child occupy themselves?
a) Drawing b) Talking c) Fidgeting
4. When your child picks the family activity, which is he most likely to choose?
a) Watch a movie b) Listening to music c) Play a Sport
5. When your child reads a book to themselves, they:
a) Sits quietly, immersed in its contents b) Mouths the words aloud or asks you to read it to
them
c) Fidgets frequently
6. Which of these iPad activities is your child most drawn to?
a) Looking at photos b) Listening to music c) Playing a game
Mostly A’s: Learns by looking
Your child responds best when new material is in lists, charts, graphs, and diagrams. A
little colour goes a long way: They can write spelling words or state capitals in different
colours so they’re easier to memorize. Abstract maths homework goes faster when you give
your visual kid objects to help them think through the problem. (If I had 12 M&M’s and
Mom ate 7, how many are left?)
Mostly B’s: Learns by listening
If your child is one of the 10 percent of kids who are auditory learners, they do well with
verbal instructions and shines in discussions. They’ll learn faster if they have a voice re-
corder: Saying things aloud can help retain info, and re-playing the recording boosts
comprehension even more. If you turns a book’s dialogue into a puppet show, they’ll remem-
ber the story.
Mostly C’s: Learns by doing
Like the majority of children, your child absorbs info best when they’re physically en-
gaged on some level. Many kinesthetic learners have trouble sitting still for long stretches.
So turn homework into a sporting event: Let them shoot a foam basketball into a laundry
