Onderwysersdag, 5 Okt: Hulde aan ons Helde
Teachers’ Day, 5 Oct: A Tribute to our Heroes As jy hier kan lees, sê dankie vir jou onderwysers. 5
Oktober is Wêreldonderwysersdag, die dag dat ons
hulde bring aan ons oorwerkte, maar onderbetaalde
helde.
Of gaan gee hom
of haar ʼn drukkie.
Koos Gresse, eendag gesê: “Wragtig, by hierdie skool
gaan ek nog al my talente opgebruik!”
If you can read here, say thank you to your
teachers. 5 October is World Teachers' Day, the
day we pay tribute to our overworked but
underpaid heroes. They are heroes, because they
not only taught us to read and write, but with
much love and patience helped to shape us into
the people we are today. People who have taught
us to dream about the future and have made us
believe we can make our dreams come true.
So pick up the phone and say thank you to those
teachers who were special to you. Or go and hug
him or her. Or if they are no longer with us, pick
a flower for your own home or light a candle and
think of them. Ordinary people, but people who
have played an extraordinary role in our lives.
They are people who not only taught you more
about their subjects, but also about life. Which
also made you love sports and discovered and
developed some of your cultural talents. Yes, we
expect our teachers to be so versatile - and they
like to do it, even if it takes a lot of time and
energy. One day one of my teachers, Mr Gresse,
said: "Really, at this school I'm going to use up all
my talents!"
Teachers love school because they love teaching,
their subject and children. Yes, they love children
- even if they don't always like everyone equally.
When one teacher told Johnny one day: "And you,
you will probably come spit on my grave one day!"

As ek aan my eie skoolgaandae dink, dink ek eerste
aan my sub A-juffrou.
My Afrikaansonderwyser van my hoërskooldae, mnr
Daardie
enkele paragraaf van 100 woorde het my lief gemaak
vir skryf.
Ek wil afsluit met ʼn mooi gedagte oor my Engels-
onderwyser, Mnr Wahl.
late.
Johnny replied: "No sir, I don't like standing in a
queue."
When I think of my own school days, I think of my
sub A teacher first. Her word was law, but when
she came to turn off our lights of the dormitory in
the hostel at night, she often gave us a snack for
comfort.
My Afrikaans teacher from my high school days,
Mr Fourie, once gave us the topic Streets and told
us to write a paragraph about it. Some did not like
it, but I liked it and I got 7/10! For me the best
point ever for an essay! That single paragraph of
100 words made me love writing.
I would like to conclude with a nice thought about
my English teacher, Mr Wahl. His wife told me that
he kept class lists of all the matric classes he
taught. When there was news of an ex-pupil, he
faithfully made a note next to the name and so he
kept abreast of our actions. But that was not all.
What really touched me the most was when she
told me that he still regularly prayed for us, with
class lists in hand.
On October 5, we pay tribute to such educational
giants that have enriched our lives.
