Teachers Everywhere BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE
SHINRAN SHONIN HAD AN EARLY
teacher named Jien. Jien was a Tendai
monk who was at the Shoren-in when
Shinran was brought there at the age
of 9 to become a monk. It was already
early evening, so Jien suggested that
they wait until the next morning. How-
ever, nine year old Shinran is said to
have spontaneously composed a poem
expressing his insight into imperma-
nence – Jien recognized Shinran’s sin-
cerity, if not something even more pro-
found, and agreed to ordain him then
and there. Kakunyo’s Godensho reports
that Shinran went on to master the
Tendai teachings. And yet…
At the age of 29 – twenty years
after being ordained – Shinran left
Mount Hiei in search of guidance.
Despite his years of study, he felt
unable to progress on the path to
enlightenment. He was fortunate to
encounter another teacher, Honen
Shonin. Honen introduced him to re-
liance on Amida Buddha, a teaching
which Shinran dove into, and which
introduced him to other teachers, in-
cluding masters from India and China.
Shinran didn’t meet these teachers in
person, he encountered them via texts,
he encountered them through the
Nembutsu.
I was a horrible student myself.
Looking back at my life, not only did
I have bad study habits, but I lacked
confidence in myself. I had many won-
derful teachers in my life, but I was so
stubborn that I often didn’t allow them
to guide me. Fortunately, the message
of the Buddha poked its way through,
and I have since met many wonderful

BCA NATIONAL COUNCIL: ON
March 5-7, Rev. Bridge, Jon Takagaki,
Steve Terusaki and I attended the
Buddhist Churches of America (BCA)
annual National Council Meeting,
hosted by the Central Cal District
temples, in Visalia. This meeting was
attended by all BCA temples to dis-
cuss business and approve the budget
for the new fiscal year. In recent years,
the highlight has been the Dharma-
thon, where the new up-and-coming
ministers give a short dharma talk to
the audience of over 200 attendees.
Two of the featured ministers were
both recent graduates of the Insti-
tute of Buddhist Studies (IBS): Rev.
Candace Shibata of Berkeley Bud-
dhist Temple (BBT), and Rev. Matt
Hamasaki, who grew up attending

OUR OAKLAND NIPPONGO GAKUEN,
in partnership with the Oakland
Fukuoka Sister City Association,
administered the Oakland-Fukuoka
Spring High School Student Exchange.
Yoshinori Tsubosaka, a 17-year old
student at Kasumigaoka High School in
Fukuoka, was the winner of the annual
English Speech Contest. ANA spon-
sors this event and awards the winner a
complimentary round trip ticket to and
from SFO during the student’s Spring
Break.
The Oakland Fukuoka Sister City
Association grants this opportunity
to our selected student at Oakland
Nippongo Gakuen.
We were well represented by
Gakuen Student Max Adler, an Oak-
land resident and 18 year old Junior at
Alameda Science And Technology
Institute. Max is an Eagle Scout. Max
diligently studies the Japanese lan-
guage at our Gakuen. Yoshinori told us
Max is jouzu (hontou ni!).
Max’s Gakuen Teacher is Yamagishi
Sensei. Max was awarded a discounted
round trip ticket to and from Fukuoka
by ANA during his Spring Break.
Max was hosted by Yoshinori and
his family from March 18th to March
26th. Yoshinori was hosted by Max and
his family from March 20th to March
28th. Both of their Spring Breaks al-
most coincided, but they got to spend
several days with each other in their re-
spective countries.
Max presented the Fukuoka
Mayor’s Office with a proclamation
from the Oakland Mayor’s Office.
Yoshinori presented the Oakland
Mayor’s Office with a proclamation
from the Fukuoka Mayor’s Office.
Yoshinori plays basketball for
Kasumigaoka High School, and he told
Mayor Schaaf how much he loves the
Golden State Warriors. Mayor Schaaf
then let Yoshinori try on her Warriors
Championship Ring (it only fit on his
pinky). Then, all of us got to try it on.
We would like to express our
sincere gratitude to the Oakland
Fukuoka Sister City Association for
allowing our Gakuen students the
honor of participating in this exchange.
The Spring Exchange occurs annu-
ally, and will be awarded to additional,
deserving Gakuen students in the 9th
through 12th grades next year and in
future years. n

Welcome!: At our re-
cent Spring Ohigan Service, I
introduced eight new BCO
members: Daniel Bissonnette, Leslie
& Bill Dougherty and Kelsey, Jeffrey
Hisaoka, Nina & Kenshin Ichikawa,
Melanie Neishi, Keith & Val Nishimura,
Alan Terusaki and Nancy Yokomizo-
Nabonne. If you recognized any of
these names, some of them grew up
here at BCO and made a personal
(and financial) commitment to be
regular, dues (Gojihi) paying
members. They will be assigned to a
HOST (Ho-On Service Team) group,
and eligible to be on the Board of
Directors. If you (or someone you
know) is interested in becoming a
BCO member, please inquire at the
Church office or contact me.
Bazaar & Food Festival (June

ter and Work Schedule in the June
edition of the Busshin. If you have
not yet been assigned a work shift
(or would like to do more), please
contact Jon Takagaki, Bazaar
Chair, at [email protected], or
the Church office. We need every-
one’s help, so please commit to
working your assigned shift(s), and
if you can’t, find your own
replacement. n
Welcome new BCO Member Jeff Hisaoka
THERE SEEMS TO BE SO MUCH
going on personally within our group
that we have been unable to sit down
and work out a program as yet. Hope-
fully, at our next meeting we can final-
ize some plans for the year. We do have
a problem in that we’ve reached that
no driving age, so we appreciate any
assistance with transportation. Even
walking to our Museum is almost a no,
no as many members have difficulty
walking any distance.
The past months have kept us busy
including Patti and her Yoga classes,
which we appreciate very much. She
puts in much thought towards our
well-being as we stretch, bend and
reach. Thank you Patti. We also have
Renie Grohl who works hard to keep
us busy with knitting. She has started
us on a new project of knitting vests for
our-selves.She brought the yarn need-
ed for us all so we were able to begin
immediately. This past month we had
two extra Thursdays so were able to
meet for knitting-only classes. We thank
you Renie for your extra efforts. n

Dharma School News BY MAYA LAWRENCE
THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL
of the Sangha who brought non-
perishable food for the Alameda
County Food Bank barrels at church.
To celebrate our collection, we had
Ice Cream Sundae Sunday at church
on March 20. It was also Ohigan, so
we had lots of sweets for everyone.
Thank you to the Youth Club who
had their Ice Cream Social the week
before and donated their ice cream
and toppings! So we decided to ex-
tend the ice cream sundae’s for an-
other week!
The High School class once
again delivered an excellent lesson
for the Dharma School students on
reusing and recycling as part of our
EcoSangha program at BCO. Stu-
dents played a game deciding which
articles should go into landfill and
which should go into recycling. Their
craft project was making wind sock
fish out of reusable materials. Very
cool and very fun. Thank you to the
High School Class!!
Our students have been busy
practicing for our Hanamatsuri
presentation. We hope you will all
attend Hanamatsuri to see our great
skit!
A very Happy Birthday our
students born in April: Sophie
Arbelbide, Grant Kamita, Conor
Kim, Rya Kwong, Mason Medeiros,
Kiyomi Nomura and Mayumi
Nomura. Wishing you all the best!! n
