5 September 2009 Poems for Teachers Day

'A student spends 25,000 hours in the campus. The school must have the best of teachers who have the ability to teach, love teaching and build moral qualities' - A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

Number One Teacher Poem

(Name of teacher), I'm happy that you're my teacher;

I enjoy each lesson you teach. As my role model you inspire me

To dream and to work and to reach.

With your kindness you get my attention; Every day you are planting a seed

Page 7: Teachers Day Messages

Of curiosity and motivation To know and to grow and succeed.

You help me fulfill my potential; I'm thankful for all that you've done.

I admire you each day, and I just want to say, As a teacher, you're number one!

The Best Teachers Poem

Teachers open up young minds,  showing them the wonders of

the intellect  and the miracle

of being able to think for themselves.  A teacher exercises

the mental muscles of students,  stretching and strengthening,

so they can make challenging decisions,  find their way in the world,  and become independent.

The best teachers care enough  To gently push and prod students

to do their best  and fulfill their potential.

You are one of those.  Thank you.

Special Teacher Poem

Thank you special teacher For helping me to know

The things I need to learn To live my life and grow.

I feel good with you because Your teaching makes me see,

If I work at it, I can do it. Thanks for showing me!

Wonderful Teacher Poem With a special gift for learning

And with a heart that deeply cares, You add a lot of love

Page 8: Teachers Day Messages

To everything you share, And even though You mean a lot,

You'll never know how much, For you helped

To change the world Through every life you touched.

You sparked the creativity In the students whom you taught, And helped them strive for goals

That could not be bought, You are such a special teacher

That no words can truly tell However much you're valued For the work you do so well.

An Unforgettable Teacher Poem When I began your class I think I knew The kind of challenges you'd make me face.

You gave me motivation to pursue The best, and to reject the commonplace.

Your thinking really opened up my mind.

With wisdom, style and grace, you made me see, That what I'd choose to seek, I'd surely find;

You shook me out of my complacency.

I thank you now for everything you've done; What you have taught me I will not outgrow.

Your kind attention touched my mind and heart; In many ways that you will never know.

  I will remember you my whole life through;

I wish that all my teachers were like you.

Teachers day, Teachers Day India

'Teachers Should Be Role Models'

'A student spends 25,000 hours in the campus. The school must have the best of teachers who have the ability to teach, love teaching

and build moral qualities' - A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

Teachers mold the lives that they influence. Lessons learned from teachers remain with their students throughout life.  Teachers that break down barriers and reach into the souls of the students that they are responsible for do not get the recognition or gratitude they have earned. Many teachers are exhausted from their workload and responsibilities.  They have their own families, financial and life stresses that challenge them along with everyone else. We should always respect our teachers. Teachers need encouragement and support from the community to feel that their devotion to students is appreciated.

Socrates was an example of a good teacher.  He considered himself a learner as well as a  teacher. For Socrates, love and friendship were the proper contexts for the pursuit of wisdom and goodness. Socrates saw himself only as a catalyst. He felt it was not his teaching, but actually the power of the Divine which enabled the person he was talking with to improve himself.

In India 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day. 5th September is the birthday of a great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday". In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' day". The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan's love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India.

Following is the Full text of the Indian President's ( A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM ) address on

Page 12: Teachers Day Messages

the eve of Teachers' Day in India , 2003.

Dear listeners of All India Radio and teachers, my greetings to all of you.

I am talking to you on the special occasion of Teachers' Day. On this day, we gratefully remember the great educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose dream was that "Teachers should be the best minds in the country". Hence, Teachers' Day is very important for all our people, for our students and even for all the parents, as the teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation. On this day, I would like to recall three teachers who helped me in shaping my life.

To begin with I am going to talk to you about my father Janab Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen, as a teacher. My father taught me a great lesson when I was a young boy. What was that lesson? It was just after India got Independence. At that time Panchayat board elections took place at Rameswaram. My father was elected Panchayat Board member and on the same day he was also elected the president of the Rameswaram Panchayat Board. Rameswaram Island was a beautiful place with 30,000 populations. At that time they elected my father as Panchayat Board president not because he belonged to a particular religion or a particular caste or spoke a particular language or for his economic status. He was elected only on the basis of his nobility of mind and for being a good human being. Dear listeners, I would like to narrate one incident that took place on the day he was elected president of the Panchayat Board.

I was at that time studying in school. Those days we did not have electricity and we used to study under ration kerosene lamps. I was reading the lessons loudly and I heard a knock at the door. We never used to lock the door in Rameswaram in those days. Somebody opened the door, came in and asked me where my father was? I told him that father had gone for the evening namaz. Then he said, I have brought something for him, can I keep it here? Since my father had gone for namaz, I shouted for my mother to get her permission to receive the item. Since she was also on the amaz there was no response. I asked the person to leave the item on the cot. After that I continued my studies.

I used to learn by reading aloud in my younger days. I was reading loud and fully concentrating on my studies. At that time my father came in and saw a tambalum kept in the cot. He asked me "What is this? Who has given that?" I told him, "Somebody came and has kept this for you". He opened the cover of the tambalum and found there was a costly dhoti, angawastram, some fruits and some sweets and he could see the slip that the person had left behind. I was the youngest child of my father, he really loved me and I also loved him a lot. He was upset at the sight of the tambalum and gifts.

That was the first time I saw him very angry and also that was the first time I had got a thorough beating from him. I got frightened and started weeping. My mother embraced and consoled me. Then my father came and touched my shoulder lovingly with affection and advised me not to receive any gift without his permission. He quoted an Islamic Hadith, which states that, "When the Almighty appoints a person to a position, He takes care of his provision. If a person takes anything beyond that, it is an illegal gain." Then he told me that it is not a good habit. A gift is always accompanied by some purpose and a gift is a dangerous thing. It is like touching a snake and getting the poison in turn. This lesson stands out always in my mind even when I am in my seventies. This incident, taught me a very valuable lesson for my life. It is deeply embedded in my mind.

I would like also to mention the writings in Manu Smriti which states that "By accepting gifts the divine light in the person gets extinguished". Manu warns every individual against accepting gifts for the reason that it places the acceptor under an obligation in favour of the person who gave the gift and ultimately it results in making a person to do things which are not permitted according to law.

I am sharing this thought, with all of you, particularly the young ones, do not be carried away by any gift which comes with a purpose and through which one loses his personality greatly. Do you think, you can follow this in your life? I will be very happy if you can practice this sincerely.

Page 13: Teachers Day Messages

When I think of my second teacher, I am reminded of my childhood days when I was studying in 8th class at the age of 13. I had a teacher, Shri Siva Subramania Iyer. He was one of the very good teachers in our school. All of us loved to attend his class and hear him. One day he was teaching about a bird's flight. He drew a diagram of a bird on the blackboard depicting the wings, tail and the body structure with the head. He explained how birds create the lift and fly. He also explained to us how they change direction while flying. For nearly 25 minutes he gave the lecture with various information such as lift, drag, how the birds fly in a formation of 10, 20 or 30. At the end of the class, he wanted to know whether we understood how birds fly. I said, I did not understand. When I said this, the teacher asked the other students whether they understood or not. Many students said that they also did not understand. He did not get upset by our response since he was a committed teacher.

Our teacher said that he would take all of us to the sea shore. That evening the whole class was at the sea shore of Rameswaram. We enjoyed the roaring sea waves knocking at the sandy hills in the pleasant evening. Birds were flying with sweet chirping voice. He showed the sea birds in formations of 10 to 20 numbers. We saw the marvellous formations of birds with a purpose and we were all amazed. He showed us the birds and asked us to see that when the birds fly, what they looked like. We saw the wings flapping. He asked us to look at the tail portion with the combination of flapping wings and twisting tail. We noticed closely and found that the birds in that condition flew in the direction they desired. Then he asked us a question, "Where the engine is and how it is powered"?

The bird is powered by its own life and the motivation of what it wants. All these things were explained to us within fifteen minutes. We all understood the dynamics from this practical example. How nice it was. Our teacher was a great teacher; he could give us a theoretical lesson coupled with a live practical example available in nature. This is real teaching. I am sure many of the teachers in schools

and colleges will follow this example.

For me, it was not merely an understanding of how a bird flies. The bird's flight entered into me and created a special feeling. From that evening, I thought that my future study has to be with reference to flight and flight systems. I am saying this because my teacher's teaching and the event that I witnessed decided my future career. Then one evening after the classes, I asked the teacher, "Sir, please tell me, how to progress further in learning all about flight." He patiently explained to me that I should complete 8th class, and then go to high school, and then I should go to engineering college that may lead to education on flight. If I complete all my education

with excellence, I might do something connected with flight sciences. This advice and the bird flying exercise given by my teacher, really gave me a goal and a mission for my life. When I went to college, I took physics. When I went to engineering in Madras Institute of Technology, I took aeronautical engineering.

Thus my life was transformed as a rocket engineer, aerospace engineer and technologist. That one incident of my teacher teaching the lesson, showing the visual live example proved to be a turning point in my life which eventually shaped my profession.

A student during his school life upto 10+2 spends 25,000 hours in the school campus. His life is, more influenced by the teachers and the school environment. Therefore, the school must have the best of teachers with ability to, teach and love teaching and build moral qualities. Teachers should become role models. Similarly, the student must be alert to build himself with best of qualities and to get ignited with a vision for his or her future life.

I would like to share with you another experience with my teacher Prof. Satish Dhawan. First, I worked in

Delhi with the Ministry of Defence. Later I joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1958 at the Aeronautical Development Establishment at Bangalore. There with the advice of the Director, I took up the development of hovercraft. Hovercraft design needed the development of a ducted contra-rotating propeller for creating a smooth flow balancing the torques. I did not know how to design a contra-rotating propeller though I knew how to design a conventional propeller. Some of my friends told me that I could approach Prof. Satish Dhawan of the Indian Institute of Science, who was well known for his aeronautical research, for help.

I took permission from my Director Dr Mediratta and went to Prof Dhawan who was sitting in a small room in the Indian Institute of Science with a lot of books in the background and a blackboard on the wall. Prof Dhawan asked me what the problem was that I wanted to discuss. I explained the problem.. He told me that it was really a challenging task and he would teach me the design if I attended his classes in IISc between 2 pm to 3 pm on all Saturdays for the next six weeks.

He was a visionary teacher. He prepared the schedule for the entire course and wrote it on the black board. He also gave me the reference material and books I should read before I start attending the course. I considered, this as a great opportunity and I started attending the discussion and started meeting him regularly. Before commencing each meeting, he would ask critical questions and assess my understanding of the subject. That was for the first time that I realized how a good teacher prepares himself for teaching with meticulous planning and prepares the student for acquisition of knowledge. This process continued for the next six weeks. I got the capability for designing the contra-rotating propeller. Prof Dhawan told me that I was ready for developing the contra-rotating propeller for a given hovercraft configuration. That was the time I realized that Prof Dhawan was not only a teacher but also a fantastic development engineer of aeronautical systems.

Later during the critical phases of testing, Prof Dhawan was with me to witness the test and find solutions to the problems. After reaching the smooth test phase, the contra-rotating propeller went through 50 hours of continuous testing. Prof Dhawan witnessed the test himself and congratulated me. That was a great day for me when I saw the contra rotating propeller designed by my team performing to the mission requirement in the hovercraft. However, at that time, I did not realize that Prof Dhawan would become chairman, ISRO and that I would get the opportunity to work with him as a project director in the development of the satellite launch vehicle SLV-3 for injecting the Rohini satellite into the orbit. Nature has its own way to link the student's dream and real life later.

This was the first design in my career which gave me the confidence to design many complex aerospace systems in future. The hovercraft could fly just above the ground level carrying two passengers. I was the first pilot for this hovercraft and I could control and maneuver the vehicle in any direction. Through this project I learnt the techniques of designing and developing the contra-rotating propeller. Above all, I learnt that in a project, problems will always crop up; we should not allow problems to be our masters but we should defeat the problems. Then successes will sparkle.

The three teachers in my life; what did they give me? In an integrated way it can be said, that any enlightened human being can be created by three unique characteristics. One is moral value system. That I got from my father the hard way. Secondly, the teacher becoming a role model. Not only does the student learn, but the teacher shapes his life with great dreams and aims. Finally, the education and learning process has to culminate in the creation of professional capability leading to confidence and will power to make a design, to make a product, to make a system, bravely combating many problems. What a fortune and blessing I had from my three teachers.

Among the listeners, there may be many parents, many teachers and a large number of students. Every one of us in this planet creates a page in human history irrespective of who he/she is. I realize my experience is a small dot in human life, but that dot has a life and light. This light, let it light many lamps.

My best wishes to all of you on this occasion of Teachers' Day. Thank you.

                                                                    Did you know ?

India also celebrates the birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former President and Vice-President and great statesman, as "Teachers' Day".

Born on September 5, 1888, at Tiruttani, 40 miles to the north-east of Madras, Radhakrishnan grew to become the most famous Indian teacher and philosopher of all times. In his honour, this day is celebrated as Teacher's Day.

He was also the Vice-President of India from 1952-1962. He held the office of the Chancellor, University of Delhi, before taking over as the President of India in May 1962.

Indian Teacher's Day History

India has been celebrating Teacher's Day on 5th September, since 1962. The day commemorates the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher par excellence, and his contribution towards Indian education system. Dr Radhakhrishnan believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country". On this day, we gratefully remember the great educationist, apart from honoring all the teachers that have made our life much more knowledgeable and fulfilled, as serving as our beacons of light.

The birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan came to be celebrated as Teacher's Day when, one day, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. In reply, Dr. Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher's day". From then onwards, Dr. Radhakrishnan's birthday is observed as Teacher's Day all across India.

Teachers' Day is very important for all the people in India, as the teachers act as foundation for creating responsible citizens and good human beings. It is impossible to imagine our lives without teachers. They are the cornerstone of our future. We can never thank our teachers enough for their immense contribution in our life. Teacher's Day is celebrated to show our acknowledgement and recognition of the hard work put in by our teachers towards our development.

Schools all over India celebrate Teacher’s Day by allowing the senior students to pose as teachers for a day. It is a fun-filled activity, which is enjoyed by both the acting teachers and their junior students. On this day, students bring gifts for their most admired teachers as well. It is an equally special day for teachers, as they get to know how much they are liked and appreciated by their students. Gifts to teachers include flowers, greeting cards and other items. Some students also write poems and messages for teachers.

Students look forward to Teacher’s Day with a lot of anticipation, for the sheer spirit of the occasion. Acting as teachers, they get a fair idea of the responsibility, so efficiently burdened by their teachers. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to be a good teacher and earn the fondness of the students at the same time. Teachers, on this day, are reminded of their school days and feel nostalgic. All in all, it is celebration mode for everyone!

Some of the usual activities performed on this occasion are dance, drama, mimicry of teachers, games, competitions, thanks giving, etc. Sometimes, students play the role of teachers and teachers play the role of students, which adds fun element to the celebrations. The day gives the students an opportunity to show respect and love to their teachers. Both teachers and students enjoy the occasion with equal enthusiasm. It gives them an opportunity to come closer to each other and have a strong bonding. Given below are some fun activities for Teacher's Day.

Teacher Day Activity Ideas

Songs: One of the best forms of entertainments is either singing or listening to songs. You may organize singing

competitions on Teacher's Day, and give away attractive prizes to the winners. Yet another option is to dedicate

a group song as well, to your teachers.

Dance: Organizing dance competition on Teacher's Day is popular in many schools and colleges. You may

also organize dance performances (classical or non classical) in your educational institution. The talented

students in your school/college would be delighted to grab the golden opportunity to showcase their talent.

Drama: if you are planning to throw a party for your teacher, on the special occasion, dramatic activities can

form a part of the celebrations. Such an activity would give the students a wonderful opportunity to show

their acting skills, while participating in drama.

towards the betterment of the students. You may also organize an award function, wherein you may honor

your teachers with titles, best suited for their role in the institution.

Teachers Day Speech Tips

Page 19: Teachers Day Messages

First, you need to decide on the duration of your Teacher's Day speech. You can conclude it in as less time

as five minutes or stretch it to as much as half an hour. However, it is the best to stick to a duration of 10 to

15 minutes, which gives you enough time to applaud your teacher, but doesn't make the speech too long

and boring.

You can include the famous quotes and sayings on teachers, in your Teacher's Day speech. However, do

make sure that the quotes pertain to the particular train of thought that you are following in the speech and

do not look as if they have been added just for the heck of it. So, be very careful while choosing the quotes

and sayings that will form a part of your speech.

You also need to decide on the flow of your speech i.e. how will the quotes and sayings will be included in

the speech, what will be the opening paragraph and how will your conclude the speech. A good idea is to

start the speech with a quote and end with it applause for the teachers and gratitude for the role that they

play in a student's life.

If you want, you can include in the speech a small description about your relationship with a particular

teacher and quote an incident that you specifically remember, where your teacher came to your rescue. It

will add a personal touch to the speech.

Though many people tend to overlook it, the speaker's voice modulation and the speed at which he/she

delivers the speech are also very important. Remember, you need to maintain a moderate speed, where

you speak neither too slow nor too fast. The pitch of your voice should be pleasing to the ears.

Couch GameTeacher's Day is a wonderful occasion to have a lot of fun with teachers. You may throw enthralling parties to your teachers and reward them with various titles. You may also arrange interesting activities, to boost up the party spirits in your guests. Ensure that no one sits idle or leaves the place just by becoming a spectator.

Dumb CharadeSince celebrating Teacher's Day has now become a customary in many countries, partying on the day is nothing new to teachers and students in schools or colleges. On the day, enthralling partiers are thrown for teachers by students. The event largely consists of interesting games and activities including song and dance competitions, mimicry of teachers etc.

Guest at the PartyAre you planning to host a party for Teacher's Day? If yes, then you would have to lay a well-formulated plan, so that everything fits into place and the mood is not spoiled at the party. Since it is a Teacher's Day party, you would want to break all the barriers between teachers and their students and encourage interaction between them. For the purpose, you may arrange games that demand everyone's presence.

Musical ChairOn Teacher's Day, teachers get an opportunity to share their views and opinion about many things, apart from studies, with their students. It gives them the opportunity to share some lighthearted moments with their students, whom they know only as disciples who take tests and lessons from them. To make the day a memorable one, you may arrange some interesting games and activities.

Pass the CushionTeacher's Day gives a nice chance for the teachers and students to come out of the four walls of classroom and interact with each other. The students get to know many things about their teachers. On the other hand, teachers let loose their serious attitude of an instructor and reveal the other (playful) side of their personality.

Personal life and background

[edit] Early Life and Education

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born into a middle class family at Tirutani in Tamil Nadu state, a town in Madras Presidency, British India, 64 km to the northwest of Madras (now Chennai). His early years were spent in Tirutani and Tirupati. His father was a subordinate revenue official in the service of a local Zamindar (landlord). His primary education was at Primary Board High School at Tirutani. In 1896 he was shifted to the Hermansburg Evangelical Lutheral Mission School at Tirupati.[1]

Radhakrishnan went through most of his education on scholarships. He joined the Voorhee's College in Vellore but switched to the Madras Christian College at the age of 17. He graduated with a Master's degree in Philosophy from the Madras Christian College in 1906, being one of its most distinguished alumni.[2] Radhakrishnan wrote his thesis for the M.A. degree on "The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions".[3] He was afraid that his M.A. thesis, "The Ethics of the Vedanta" would offend his philosophy professor, Dr. A.G. Hogg. Instead, Dr. Hogg commended Radhakrishnan on doing an excellent job. Radhakrishnan's M.A. thesis was published when he was only 20. Philosophy was not his personal choice, but seemingly an accident. A cousin of his who had graduated from the same college handed over to him the textbooks in philosophy. As Radhakrishnan was poor at this juncture of his life, this incident decided his future career.[4][5] Later on he felt deep interest in his subject and wrote many acclaimed works on philosophy, both eastern and western.

[edit] Marriage

Radhakrishnan was married to Sivakamu, a distant cousin, in 1904 at the age of 16. His bride was then only 10 years old. The marriage was a traditional Indian arranged marriage. They had five daughters and a son, Sarvepalli Gopal

[edit] Career

In 1914, in a strange twist of fate, Radhakrishnan met Srinivasa Ramanujan, the mathematical genius. Srinivasa was leaving for Cambridge for studies and had come to seek Radhakrishnan's blessings because a goddess came in his dream and told him to do so before undertaking the trip. The two never met again.

In 1918, Radhakrishnan was selected as Professor of Philosophy by the University of Mysore. By that time, he had written many articles for journals of repute like The Quest, Journal of Philosophy and the International Journal of Ethics. He completed his first book "The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore." He believed Tagore's philosophy to be the "genuine manifestation of the Indian spirit." Radhakrishnan's second book, "The Reign of Religion in Contemporary Philosophy" was published in 1920.

In 1921, he was appointed as a professor in philosophy to occupy the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta. Radhakrishnan represented the

Page 21: Teachers Day Messages

University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire in June 1926 and the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University in September 1926. In 1929, Radhakrishnan was invited to take the post vacated by Principal J. Estlin Carpenter in Manchester College, Oxford. This gave him the opportunity to lecture to the students of the University of Oxford on Comparative Religion. For his services to education, he was knighted by the British Government in 1931, but did not use the title in personal life preferring instead his academic title 'Doctor'. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936. In 1936, Radhakrishnan was named Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford, and was elected a Fellow of All Souls College. In 1939, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya invited him to become Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He continued as its Vice-Chancellor till January, 1948. When India became independent in 1947, Radhakrishnan represented India at UNESCO, and was later Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, from 1949 to 1952. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly of India.

Radhakrishnan was elected as the first Vice President of India in 1952.[6] In 1956, his wife Sivakamamma died. They were married for over 51 years.[6] He was elected as the second President of India (1962-1967). When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, 5 September. He replied,

"Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers' Day."

His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.[7]Radhakrishnan along with Ghanshyam Das Birla and a few other Social Workers in pre independence era formed Krishnarpan Charity Trust.

[edit] Philosophy

Radhakrishnan argued that Western philosophers, despite all claims to objectivity, were biased by theological influences of their own culture.[8] He wrote books on Indian philosophy according to Western academic standards, and made Indian philosophy worthy of serious consideration in the West. In his book "Idealist View of Life" he has made a powerful case for the importance of intuitive thinking as opposed to purely intellectual forms of thought. He is well known for his commentaries on the Prasthana Trayi namely, the Bhagavadgita, the Upanishads and the Brahma Sutra.

He was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 1938. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and the Order of Merit in 1963. He received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1961, and the Templeton Prize in 1975, a few months before his death. He donated the entire Templeton Prize amount to Oxford University. The Oxford University instituted the Radhakrishnan Scholarships in 1989 which was later renamed the Radhakrishna Chevening Scholarships in his memory.

For recent biographies, see Robert Minor's: "Radhakrishnan, a religious biography" or Sarvepalli Gopal's:"Radhakrishnan;a biography".

“ It is not God that is worshipped but the authority that claims to speak in His name. Sin becomes disobedience to authority not violation of integrity. ”

The Guru is the one who dispels the darkness and brings us into light. Once the Guru has accepted us and we become her disciples, we slowly start imbibing her qualities. Without a Guru,an aspirant cannot move ahead with his spiritual practices. Sadhaks are like seeds whom the guru lovingly nurtures by giving the water of deeksha & the sunlight of gyan and creates favourable conditions for them, so that the tree of their spirituality can grow to fruition without any badhas. The guru brings out the good qualities in us, which have been lying dormant since many lives. The guru gives shelter to the plants symbolizing our spirituality which are wilting in the sun.

Our situation is like the person who has read about a place in a book but has never visited it. The Guru has actually visited the place and has direct experience of Brahman, which, she in her grace, agrees to pass on to us. Being in the saniddhya of the Guru accelerates our spiritual development. Gurumaa has ignited the spark of spirituality in me and I have the confidence that she will watch over me till this spark blazes into the fire of truth. It is possible to attain wisdom in one lifetime through the grace of the Guru. But, certain conditions apply. The sadhak has to totally surrender to the Guru and follow her in word and spirit.

We would always like to be at the feet of the master but some of us will have to remain in the world and fulfil our responsibilities. Even while being away from the Guru, I can continue my practices, and experience the blessings of Gurumaa in all that I do. The Guru may ask us to do seva which we may not find very conducive, but we must consider it as a test which we must pass in the school of spirituality. Gurumaa is preparing us for further advanced tests in life. But we must have total faith in her love and guidance.

An unlit lamp can only be lighted by a lamp that is already lit. In the same way, it requires an illuminated soul or a ‘bodhi prapt’ soul as Gurumaa says, to enlighten another soul. Gurumaa laughingly says,’I will kill you’. She means that she will kill our ego, which is the greatest impediment on our spiritual path. God sends the Guru to guide us, when he finds us yearning for a Guru. ‘When the student is ready, the teacher appears.’ The Guru tears the veil of ignorance from our eyes, which we keep covered with our worldly desires. The Grace of God takes on the form of the Guru.

According to the Advayataraka Upanishad, ‘the syllable gu means shadows, the syllable ru who disperses them. Because of the power to disperse darkness, the guru is so named.’ In the Bhagvad Gita, Lord Krishna speaks to Arjun to ‘acquire the transcendental knowledge from a Self-realized master by humble reverence, by sincere inquiry, and by service. The wise ones who have realized the Truth will impart the Knowledge to you.’

Sant Kabir relegated the Guru to a level higher than God by saying,’Guru Govind dou khade, kake lagu paaye, balihari Guru apki, jin Govind diyo dikhaye.’ (The couplets of

Page 23: Teachers Day Messages

Kabir have been sung by Gurumaa in her melodious voice and can be heard on ‘Kahe Kabira’ CDs and cassettes which can be obtained online on www.gurumaa.com or www.mysticamusic.com. These are also available at Gurumaa Centres located in various cities and towns in India.

It is our great fortune that we have found a Guru like Gurumaa. I can only say,’Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwarah, Gurur shaakshaat Param Brahma, tasmai Shri Guruve Namah!’ Our Guru is a powerhouse of spiritual magnetic energy and we are the bulbs which can be ignited with this energy! However, each one of us must be worthy of receiving this tremendous flow of energy. A cup cannot be filled unless it is empty! So we must empty ourselves of all negative qualities so that we can receive the cup of nectar in the form of the Grace our Guru is offering us.
