Introduction

Akaroa Area School is now located on one site and consists of the newly refurbished Junior School that accommodates year 1 to 6 pupils and has 3 classrooms, two of which are currently operating as an open and collaborative learning space. The Senior School accommodates Year 7 to 13 pupils and has 9 classrooms and various other learning spaces including a video conferencing room, a senior study room and a Special Needs Unit. A school/ community dental clinic has been relocated from the previous Junior Site. The old school hall has been moved to the corner of Rue Jolie and Selwyn Avenue and converted to a Library which is attached to a boutique cinema/theatre and café complex. The full sized gymnasium with viewing gallery was opened on September 14, 2006 and acts as a school hall and venue for a variety of events including concerts, conferences and presentations. A new school swimming pool was completed in October 2008 providing a quality recreational and learn to swim facility for students and for the community. In September 2009 the fully refurbished Hard MaterialsTechnology Block and new Art Room /Multimedia Studio were completed providing students and adult community classes with the very best facilities . The School and Community Library is a joint venture between the School and former Banks District Council now almalgamated with Christchurch City Council. Computers are available for public and school use with full access to the catalogues and the World Wide Web and e-mail. Separate property occupancy agreements cover the dental clinic, the Library and the theatres. The school has an active programme to provide access to Information, Communication and Technology equipment. Every student from Year 5-13 has access to their own dedicated device for use during class for learning. Each junior class is also equipped with its own computer pod for student use as well as class ipads. The senior section of the school also has dedicated computers which cater for a variety of learning areas including design, multimedia production and digital photography. Online (distance) learning is provided through the NetNZ organisation, Te Kura (the Correspondence School), The Open Polytechnic and Travel & Tourism. NETNZ is a cluster of 40 schools providing additional courses in an on-line learning environment. Students receive lessons via google hangouts which are supported by collaborations with others via blogs or forums. Since 2013 the school has used google tools to enhance curriculum delivery for students and provide professional development for teachers and support staff. The school is fully networked and has wireless capability. The School is surrounded by a unique topographical and marine features of the Akaroa environment and we therefore strive to use our environment as a resource for learning. We provide a variety of outdoor experiences and training in rock climbing, abseiling, sea kayaking, horse riding, tramping, orienteering and bushcraft – the latter covering first aid, survival skills etc. As an environmentally focused school we embrace sustainable practices that will develop our awareness, responsibility and care for our unique environment. The School’s Fundraising Group has been outstandingly successful. Local, regional and national bodies including service clubs, community organisations, sporting groups and businesses have made donations towards the costs of a variety of facilities, courses and assets, particularly the new library, gymnasium, the school pool and upgrade of facilities and a new school van.

Students may also be offered subjects via NETNZ video conferencing, or other service providers such as Open Polytechnic. Some of the subjects studied in recent years have included – Spanish, Classical Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Travel & Tourism, Automotive Engineering and Agriculture to name a few. Sporting & Cultural Events We participate in a number of regular events throughout the year. The Senior students participate in Combined Country High Schools Tournaments and annually the 3 day CASAFEST (Canterbury Area Schools Association Festival) is hosted by one of the Canterbury Area Schools. Akaroa hosted CASAFEST in 2012. Students are sent home a notice regarding these events generally two weeks prior. Where possible the school endeavours to subsidise the transport costs. In some instances the students who excel at these tournaments may go onto compete in regional and national events.
