Acronyms and Outline
• CCSSM = Common Core State Standards for Mathematics [overview]
• PARCC = Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career [look at released item and task prototypes]
• Model Curriculum – recently (here in Illinois) developed curriculum outline for grades 6-11 based on the CCSSM [look at structure & example units]

Quick Overview of the CCSSMCommon Core State Standards for Mathematics
• National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)
• Finished in 2010.
• Adopted by 45 states, plus D.C.
• New assessments being developed by – Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Career (PARCC) and – Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC)
• See also FAQ page.
Emphasized in every grade and repeatedly throughout the document.
My favorite line:
PARCC Assessments• In 2014-15 these will replace the ISAT (Illinois
Standards Achievement Test)
• There will be a beginning of the year test and end of the year test. There may also be some during-the-year tests (?)
• All done online (it is not our job here, today, to figure out how to get enough computer and bandwidth to make this happen) Students will need to practice online.
• PARCC does provide an email newsletter.
Calculator Policy – this is HUGE
• One page document – share it!• Go to website
Also of interest on the PARCC Assessment Policies page:
• Reference Sheets– “Communication Around…Reference Sheets” < good– 5-8 Reference Sheets– HS Reference Sheets
PARCC MODEL CONTENT FRAMEWORKS
• Developed to help guide the writing of items.• Online document.• a “framework browser” which can be used
to search the framework.• Go to website.
PARCC Item and Task Prototypes
• PARCC does provide a PowerPoint describing their assessment approach, including “shifts and assessment advances for Mathematics.”
• Go to the website.– Some items developed by PARCC (and more
coming out this summer)– Some items developed by the Dana Center (at UT -
Austin)
Illinois Model Curriculum
• State Law (2011) stated that a model curriculum would be developed.
• Developed in Fall 2012 and finished in early 2013.
• Being approved by the State Legislature.
• Will go on the ISBE website soon, as a recommendation.
• Developed for grades 6, 7, and 8, and HS Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3. Math 1, 2, and 3 are integrated courses.
Illinois Model Curriculum
• Look at examples. – Scope and sequence.– Unit outlines.
The big question isIs the state going to require one test (and
which one Traditional or Integrated?) or Will individual school districts get to choose?
PARCC is writing (and will make available) two sets of tests for HS mathematics for 2014-15.• Traditional (Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II) • Integrated (Math 1, Math 2, Math 3)
Questions, comments, discussion.
