Procedures● History of Saint Patrick’s Day● Teacher will review briefly about the country of Ireland (referring back to day 5)● Teacher will explain that Ireland’s national holiday is Saint Patrick’s Day. Teacher will

explain that for the rest of class, they will be doing different activities that entail Saint Patrick’s Day.

● Teacher will ask class to share how they usually celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, what activities are they involved in.

● Teacher will ask students why did it start, when is it celebrated, what are common symbols that are seen

● Teacher will explain that the class is listening to traditional Irish music that is usually heard during the holidays or special events in Ireland

● The teacher will play an informational video of the history of Saint Patrick’s Day. The students will be given a worksheet with 2 shamrocks on it. On one of the shamrocks, it will say, “I learned...”. The second one will say, “I wonder...”

● The students will have to fill out each shamrock with four separate ideas. They can be new words, a phrase, a question, or something new that they noticed. After the video is finished, the teacher will ask the students to discuss the different things they wrote as they turn and talk to a neighbor

● The teacher will ask the students to share some of the things they learned new and some questions that they have about Saint Patrick’s Day.The teacher will review the main points of history from the video by asking a series of questions.

● The teacher will ask each question and give two choices to the right answer. One side of the room will represent one answer, the other side will represent the other answer.

● When the teacher gives each question and two choices, the students will have to stand up and pick which side to move to. o When is Saint Patrick’s Day celebrated? ● Students will be given a sheet of symbols that represent Saint Patrick’s Day.

● Students will color each symbol, cut out the squares, write the description on the back, and decorate their pot of gold

● The “pot of gold” will be used for partners to test each other on the symbols to win golden coins to put in their “pot of gold”.

● Flip book of Ireland, history of Saint Patrick, favorite part of Saint Patrick’s Day● The teacher will read an example of a flip book that was written by another class.● The teacher will hand out the blank flip books and the students will be given

time to create their own story of something that they learned from Saint Patrick’s Day.

● The students will decorate and write in their book.● The students will read their stories to three other students and will take turns.● The students will take home the flip books when they are completed.● For students that finish the activity quickly and correctly, the teacher will have a

script of a play for the students to practice. If the students practice a couple times and they feel confident enough, they will have time to share it with the rest of the class.

● Then students will be given their passport and will fill out 2 new things they have learned overall about Ireland and their customs as well as coloring the Irish flag

Differentiation● This lesson meets the needs of students that learn through movement because of the

activity using the different sides of the classroom to answer the questions. ● It also meets the needs of visual learners because of the PowerPoint of the symbols and

the cutout activity. ● It meets the needs of auditory learners because of the music played in the beginning of

class and the informational video.Closure● 4th graders will come in from the other class to perform a short skit that they prepared

for their class about Saint Patrick’s Day● The students will be given their passports to write down 2 new facts that they learned

about Ireland for the past 3 days. ● Students will turn and talk to their group to discuss any new and fun facts about Ireland

Formative/ Summative Assessment● Formative:

Teacher will assess students by seeing if the students understand the history of the holiday when they answer the questions by walking to each side of the room.Teacher will assess students when they share their flip books to the other students

● Summative:The teacher will also assess by the completion of their passport and assess the two facts that was written by the students.
