Thank you everyone! 125th Year Celebration Day

In 1893 Te Horo School opened after James Gear generously gave a section of land to build a one roomed school. This would make 2018 the 125th year that Te Horo School was open. Last year was a particularly busy one full of change for the school and this was somehow overlooked. The staff, Board and Home and School Committee have all agreed that they would like to acknowledge and celebrate this significant event and as such we have set aside Friday 8th of November as a day of celebration. Please mark your diaries and if you are interested in helping us plan for the day, or know someone who is, please email [email protected]. We are keen to invite past and present families and community members to this day - so please help us and spread the word.

Wow, term 3 done and dusted! It was definitely a fast finish to the term with a ski camp, equestrian events, multiple school trips, and an end to winter sports. By the time you get this I will have had morning tea with all the wonderful staff at Te Horo School. A very small gesture in token of appreciation for the amazing job these people do on a daily basis to deliver the very best education to our tamariki. Ka pai staff, you’re amazing, and don’t let anyone tell you different! Led by our wonderful new principal Michelle, the staff have embraced change this year. They have been challenged to think and act differently and they’ve delivered. They’ve had opportunities to step into leadership roles and they’ve grasped it with both hands. All this and they continue to evolve the way they deliver the curriculum to ensure our tamariki develop the knowledge, and skills to be successful in life. Speaking of the delivery of the curriculum, it is vastly different from when you and I went to school. Modern learning environments, I hear you say…..what does this mean? Collaborative teaching….I never had that growing up. Play based learning…excuse me??!! Shouldn’t the teacher just stand at the front and lecture like they used to in my day? Well, the answer to that quite frankly is no! As parents and caregivers, you need to take the time to understand HOW the teachers are delivering the curriculum these days. It’s different, way different, and it has to be, as our tamariki are learning skills to be able to do jobs that don’t currently exist. Standing at the school gates and passing judgement on this is not acceptable, if you don’t understand what’s happening in the class, you need to talk to the teacher. If your child is having any kind of difficulty, your role is to work with the teacher to overcome this. A successful education for your child requires true engagement from the teacher, the child, and the parent or caregiver. Anything less, is unacceptable. And if things are going well, a little thanks to the staff wouldn’t go amiss. With only 1 more term left for our year 8 students before they go to college. It is worth mentioning at this point, that Te Horo school leavers, do exceptionally well at college. The education delivered in the Senior Block, and the preparedness of our tamariki for the next step in their lives, is in my eyes, best in class. The college Principals in our region want our year 8 students, they outperform their peers across the board, socially, behaviourally, and educationally. Enjoy your last term year 8’s!! Finally, the Board of Trustees are firmly behind all the staff at Te Horo School and fully support the excellent work they are doing. The school however, will not be successful without the support of the parent community. We are heading in the right direction, and need your support. Enjoy your holiday (if you get one) and see you in term 4. From your Board!

Plastic Packaging

in School Lunches

As part of the Year 5 / 6 campaign on keeping our school environment clean and to help reduce plastic waste, the students would like to introduce plastic free Thursdays in Term 4. Students will be encouraged to leave one off use plastic wrapping of food at home and find alternative ways to bring food to school in their lunch boxes.

Ideas could include using small sealing bags for food items such as sandwiches, fruit and vegetables, that can be washed and used a multiple of times. Involv-ing students in baking at home to make biscuits cakes and even muesli bars is another great way to reduce commercially wrapped muesli bars biscuits and cakes. Snack sized amounts of crisps can be taken from larger bulk bags and also placed into self sealing bags which can then be again washed and reused.

Anything that we can collectively do to reduce the amount of plastic waste being created and dumped is good not just for Te Horo School but also for the planet that we live on for future generations.

This campaign will begin on the first Thursday in the new term.

Thank you for your support from everyone in Years 5 and 6
