New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr on

Wednesday shattered Belinda

Clark’s 21-year-old record for

the highest score in women’s

out in a match against Ireland in

Dublin. The 17-year-old Amelia,

opening the New Zealand

and two sixes in her 145-ball

Talismanic national football

team captain Sunil Chhetri feels

India should play against top-

10 ranked s ides of the

continent in the next few

months if the country desires

to do well in next year’s Asian

Cup.

Chhetri said it would be difficult

to play against the top-five

countries — Australia, Iran,

Korea, Japan and Saudi

Arabia — which are playing

in the World Cup starting

tomorrow in Russia but they

can for other teams which are

above India.

“I definitely feel so (play

against top-10 ranked teams

in Asia). It will be difficult to play

against the top five as they are

playing in the World Cup. But

we need to play against teams

better than us and that also

away matches,” Chhetri said

during an interaction.

“At home we are doing better

but in away matches, if I may

say so, our record is poor,”

said Chhetri, who is a brand

ambassador of online fantasy

sports platform StarPick which

today announced the launch

of the football World Cup 2018

platform offering prizes worth

Rs 20 crores.

Chhetri, who turns 34 in

August, said the team should

not get carried away with the

triumph in the Intercontinental

Cup and it should continue to

work hard to perform well in

Asian Cup.

“We don’t get to play against

New Zealand and Kenya

everyday but the teams we

are going to play in Asian Cup

(in January 2019) l ike

Thailand and Bahrain are two

to three levels higher than us.

We should be happy with what

we have done but not get

carried away. We have to

improve a lot,” he said.

Moscow, June 14

The World Cup will be heading

to North America for the fourth

time if the hosting rights to 2026

are, as expected, handed to

the joint bid from the United

States, Mexico and Canada at

Wednesday’s FIFA congress

in Moscow. The rival bid from

Morocco, for the first 48-team

tournament, was hoping for a

late surge in support from

lobbying efforts in the Russian

capital on Tuesday but most

observers expect the African

bid to fall short.

The Dutch Football Federation

(KNVB) came out in support

for the Morocco bid while the

campaign is confident that the

federat ions from Guam,

American Samoa, the U.S.

Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

will not be allowed to vote given

they are U.S territories.

The North American bid began

the campaign as strong

favourites but Morocco has

enjoyed some success over

recent months and the result

could be closer than

anticipated.

But while FIFA politics has a

habit of throwing up surprises,

the promise of a handsome

profit from games played at

large capacity, already existing

stadiums across North America

is likely to sway enough voters.

The last time FIFA voted on

World Cup hosting rights was

in 2010 with the decision resting

with the old executive committee

and they chose Russia to host

the 2018 tournament and

Qatar for 2022.

Anupa Barla produced a late

goal as the Indian women’s

team salvaged a 1-1 draw

against hosts Spain in the

second game of the five-match

series at the Consejo Superior

de Deportes Hockey Stadium

on Thursday.

Outclassed 0-3 in the opening

game, India recovered well to

produce a gritty show as they

made a comeback in the last

two quarters after Spain

dominated the match in the first

two quarters.

It was Spain’s Berta Bonastre

(14th) who opened the scoring

but Anupa cancelled out her

goal in the 54th minute which

meant that the match ended in

a well-fought draw.

The opening quarter saw both

the teams vie for possession in

midfield and creating a few

India women’s hockey team salvages

chances. It was the hosts who

managed to take the lead in the

14th minute as their 26-year-

old forward Bonastre found

herself in space and scored in

her second consecutive match

to put the pressure on the

visitors. World No. 10 India

started the second quarter well

and had a couple of chances,

but could not manage to beat

the Spanish Goalkeeper Maria

Ruiz. The Indian midfield made

sure that they won back

possession quickly to put

pressure on the hosts, but the

hosts kept up a resolute

defensive structure to take their

1-0 lead into half-time. India

started to get into rhythm in the

third quarter with the defence

keeping out Spain’s efforts and

converting the defence into

attack quickly. A strong third

quarter performance from the

Indian team saw them knocking

on the hosts’ door, with skipper

Rani coming close to finding the

equaliser in the latter minutes

of the quarter.

Sailing of MV

Nicobar postponedPort Blair, June 14

Due to adverse weather

conditions, MV Nicobar

could not sa il from

Kolkata on her schedule

departure date i.e. on Jun

11, 2018. However, now

the vessel had sailed from

Kolkata to Port Blair via

Mayabunder on Jun 13,

2018, which is expected

to arrive Port Blair on Jun

18.

Due to delay in arrival of

the vessel from Kolkata,

further schedule of the

vessel from Port Blair to

Kolkata via Mayabunder

on Jun 18, 2018 (voyage

No. 800) has been

postponed to Jun 19, 2018

at 6 pm. Similarly, the

vessel will sail back to

Port Blair via Mayabunder

on Jun 27, instead of Jun

25, 2018, from Kolkata.

Meanwhile, to find out the ground reality, as expressed by the truck owners/

drivers, a trial was also conducted by the Director, STS, through a staff on June 13,

2018 at Chatham-Haddo steep starting from Police Station, Chatham through a cargo

loaded private truck bearing Reg. No. AN-01/M 1995. During the trial, it was noticed

that with the installation of speed limit devise of 60 km, the following defectives were

found.

1. Fuel supply to the engine is reducing/controlling to the extent of 30- 40 %. This has

resulted in reducing the vehicle pick up and speed in the steep areas, as well as

flashing out of white smoke instead of black smoke, which may cause fire.

2. Fuel not supplying as per requirement during steep.

3. Engine speed breaking up/reducing slowly.

4. Fuel not supplying for number 1 & 2 gear. This may be due to engine failure

because of non supply of required fuel while plying in steep areas.

5. Many other technical problems were also noticed in the vehicles.

The letter further states that before fixing the speed limit through a notification

dated January 25, 2018, no consultation/pre discussion were held with the concerned

Association or the stakeholders, nor was there any trial in steep areas.

Shri Ray further added that the geographical topography of A&N Islands is entirely

different from the mainland States-UTs, including the roads. As such, the issue should

be reviewed in the larger interest of the truck/van and other vehicle owners/drivers,

he stated.

In view of the above, the MP has suggested the following points to address the

issue at the earliest viz.

a. A technical committee having knowledge in the field may be constituted to assess

the ground reality after making necessary trial of all categories of vehicles and fix

appropriate speed limits for the vehicles which are required as per norms.

b. Before fixing/revision of speed limit of vehicles, an opportunity of hearing may be

given to the Truck/Van Owners/drivers and other affected persons/stake holders in

A&N Islands for presenting their grievances.

c. Exemption/ relaxation from installing speed limiting devises to such type of vehicles

may also be considered at par with the other States/UTs like Himachal Pradesh,

Mizoram, Shillong etc. as we came to know that these states exempted.

d. Till such time, the operation of the present notification dated 25th January, 2018

may be kept in abeyance, the letter from the MP added.
