This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. We know that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. We know that the baptism of John was a baptism of repentance which then raises the question, “why would Je-

sus need to be baptized given the fact that he did not need to repent of any-thing?” Jesus was baptized by John in order that the waters of baptism would be blessed for all ages to come. Moreover, Our Lord modeled the importance of this sacrament for all of us. The element of water used by John for Jesus would be used for all subsequent generations. So, from those waters now each one of us is baptized. When we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus, we are reminded of our own baptism. When we were baptized, our parents accepted the responsibility of forming and educating us in the Catholic faith and in the love of God. They made a promise to help us to believe all that the Church teaches and believes. Fur-thermore, they promised that they would reject sin and Satan and help us to reject evil as well. Because of these promises we were incorporated into the Body of Christ. Now, as adults, the challenge to live out baptismal promises falls to us. We rely on the grace of our baptism to live the life of Jesus – to reject sin and to act in accord with being a child of God destined for the Kingdom of Heaven. Sincerely, Rev. Miguel Gonza lez

Este fin de semana celebramos el bautismo de Jesu s. Sa-bemos que Jesu s fue bautizado por Juan el Bautista en el rí o Jorda n. Sabemos que el bautismo de Juan fue un bau-tismo de arrepentimiento que luego plantea la pregunta: "¿por que habrí a que bautizar a Jesu s dado que no necesi-

taba arrepentirse de nada?" Jesu s fue bautizado por Juan para que las aguas del bautismo fueran bendeci-das para todas las generaciones por venir. Adema s, Nuestro Sen or modelo la importancia de este sacramento para todos nosotros. El elemento de agua utilizado por Juan para Jesu s se usarí a para todas las generaciones posterio-res. Entonces, de esas aguas ahora cada uno de nosotros es bautizado. Cuando celebramos la fiesta del bautismo de Jesu s, recordamos nuestro propio bau-tismo. Cuando nos bautizamos, nuestros padres aceptaron la responsabilidad de formarnos y educarnos en la fe cato lica y en el amor de Dios. Hicieron una promesa para ayudarnos a creer todo lo que la Iglesia ensen a y cree. Adema s, prometieron que rechazara n el pecado y a Satana s y nos ayudara n a rechazar el mal tambie n. Debido a estas promesas fuimos incorporados al Cuerpo de Cristo. Ahora, como adultos, el desafí o de vivir las promesas bautismales nos corres-ponde a nosotros. Confiamos en la gracia de nuestro bautismo para vivir la vida de Jesu s, para rechazar el pecado y para actuar de acuerdo con ser un hijo de Dios destinado al Reino de los Cielos.
