My pride and joy 1930 FordModel A Pickup
TC090513DB08A
ONE of Rex Patmore’s early Ford was a radical (for the 19060’s) stroked, flathead V8powered ‘34 coupe. It used a Jaguar manual gearbox, Vauxhall front suspension and VWand Holden steering components and was capable of under 14s on the 1⁄4 mile strip.
Tosay Rex Patmore is ‘true blue’ Ford is anunderstatement. He admits buying a Holden once — a
mistake he says.Other than that he has had over 20 Fords
— from the Model A, to V8s — and eightFalcons. He can talk about all the cars he has
owned, and where they went, which beggedthe question — Did you regret selling any ofthem?‘‘Yip, every one,’’ is the answer. He’s down to two Fords at present — the
yellow 1930Model A Pickup and a rat rod buildin the shed. The pickup was spotted at Mourea (near
Rotorua on the road to Tauranga) by BruceShaw — a fellow member of Te AwamutuMotor Vehicle Enthusiasts Group. He mentioned it in the club newsletter and
Mr Patmore got the address and went for alook. He immediately liked it and approached
the owners. He found the Ford had been in the family
over 50 years, and while it was for sale, it hadto be to the right person.Mr Patmore re-visited three times before
the deal was done. His original plan was to re-power it with a
flathead V8, but his old mate Cameron Crossfrom Cambridge said that wouldn’t be right, and to help win the argument, offered to buildthe motor. It worked out great — a rebuilt 201ci four
cylinder Model A engine that cost just $300.He says the original gearbox was a bit
noisy so he pulled it apart and rebuilt it with alightened flywheel and V8 clutch. It’s still noisy— but in a different way.Only other mechanical modifications are a
Type 97 V8 carburettor on a purpose builtmanifold and 12V electrics. The diff is standard apart from being
rebuilt to stop an oil leak.Wheels are 17’’ from a 33/34 V8— smaller
than the original 19s, but able to take a widertyre.Mr Patmore says he found the pickup had
been made from a car because when hestarted work he found rear door hinge fittingsin the pillar. But he says it was a good job and with a
few new panels from Auckland he set about
straightening all the metal then sprayed ithimself. He and his wife Barbara re-trimmed the
interior courtesy of TheWarehouse carpet andmodern seats were fitted.Mr Patmore says he had the project sitting
around for about four years with nothinghappening while he sorted out his leg.Once he was ‘back on his feet’ it took
about a year to finish.A great touch is the signage which pays
homage to his parent’s Ray and Betty’s carrierbusiness in Pukeatua. It started as Empson and Patmore, then
Ray bought his partner out and it was latersold to George Sinclair. So the R and B Patmore (Rex and Barbara)
General carrier name lives on, complete withoriginal party-line phone number (7D).The pickup went straight through its first
WOF check and is used as a daily run-around.
Mr Patmore is well into the next project— the Model A Roadster ratrod. He’s rebuilt the 302ci V8 and mocked up a mixture of Ford andMitsubishi parts that will provide driveline, suspension and steering. He recently picked up a great collection of guards and panels that
will help him restore the US sourced coupe back to shape and his mainfocus now is preparing the chassis.

Targa Rotorua hasnew date, format
Photo: Fast Company/GroundSky Photography
TWO-TIME and defending Targa Rotorua title-holders Glenn Inkster and Spencer Winn are jointfavourites for this year’s Targa Rotorua event.
There’s both a new look and new date for the TargaRotorua Tarmac Motor rally this year. Now three day event, it is also on this coming
weekend — a month earlier than usual. For the five years up until 2011 Targa Rotorua was
run as a two-day event on Queen’s Birthday weekend.Last year, however, it was run the weekend after to
avoid clashing with Gypsy Day and this year it has beenbrought forward as part of a major re-shuffle of thethree-event Targa calendar. As part of that re-shuffle the two-day Targa
Bambina event run out of Auckland in March wasreplaced by a new single-day Targa Rallysprint event inWaiuku, Targa Rotorua gets a new date and an extraday and the Targa New Zealand event in late Octoberand early November will be run over four rather thanfive days.‘‘Time is the big issue these days,’’ says event
director Peter Martin.‘‘Our competitors tell us they still love our events.
And they still want to do them. It’s just for more andmore, getting the time to be able to do them, and dothem properly, is the problem.’’By bringing the date of Targa Rotorua forward, and
adding a couple of competitive stages on the Friday —a day up until now reserved for documentation andscrutineering — Mr Martin says that there are anumber of benefits.‘‘For a start we give everyone involved a little bit
more time between our twomain events, Targa Rotoruaand Targa New Zealand. As well as a new format and date this year’s Targa
Rotorua event also has a new charity partner, Kids InCars.

Diesel option for new Kuga
BY DEAN TAYLOR
DriveBy first experi-enced the Ford Kugajust 11 months ago —
and the verdict was greatvehicle but it needs a dieseloption.Back then the Kuga
came in one form — petrolpowered Titanium. Now Ford has released
the 2013 Kuga in threeforms, and with a dieseloption.I drove the range top-
ping Titanium diesel fromFairview Motors, but thisone had the new 2.0 LitreDuratorq TDCi 4 cylinder 16Vcommon rail turbodiesel. The petrol engine is new
too — not the thirsty fivecylinder unit from last year’smodel, but a four cylinder1.6 litre EcoBoost that is25% more fuel efficient. All New Zealand models
are full time AWD and havesix speed automatictransmissions. The diesel engine makes
120kW of power and 340Nmof torque.I found the engine quiet
and refined—with plenty ofget-up-and-go.It is also economical —
claiming 6.2l/100km.I like the ease of the
transmission’s manualoption and the layout of thedash and information con-sole, which offers lots ofchoices. The new Kuga has
retained all the road man-ners of the previous model, but with more attractions.
The all leather interior isa nice space, and the Kugahas lots of great touches, such as individual lighting, trays (as well as cupholders) and generous stor-age.I really like the panor-
ama roof, and even on acrisp day, opening thesunroof to the elements wasa pleasant experience. The Kuga has a premium
sound system, Bluetoothconnectivity and backingcamera. The tailgate opens and
closes automatically — agreat feature.Safety is taken care of
with the full range of pas-senger aids and electronics. Some of the new
features are combined inwhat Ford calls IPS (Intelli-gent Protection Systems) —
blind spot warning, lanechange warning, roll-overprotection and slow orstopped vehicle detection. When I first encountered
some of these technologies Icommented on the difficultyof placing your trust in thevehicle’s computer — butnow more car-makers areusing it and it is becomingthe ‘norm’.I recall driving my first
vehicle with ABS and beingtentative at testing this‘new’ technology. Now who would be with-
out it.On the outside the Kuga
is a striking design andlooks impressive on its 19’’alloys (Titanium model).I think the new options
from Ford make Kuga aserious contender in thispopular class.

Road Safety Week— see, and be seen❏ PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER TO STAY SAFE ON OUR ROADS
Pedestrians and drivers need towork together to reduce thenumber of people hit by vehicles
on New Zealand roads says the AA.This week is Road Safety Week
2013, and the focus this year is onpedestrian safety.Last year three pedestrians were
killed and 84 injured after being hit bya vehicle. There will also have been an
equally large number of drivers leftmentally and emotionally traumatisedfrom being involved in these crashes, even if they are not physically hurt.It is a terrible amount of harm and
made even sadder by the fact thatmost of the crashes involve peoplesimply not looking or seeing eachother.Crash investigations found that
37.5 percent of the crashes involved apedestrian crossing the road heedlessof the traffic while 34 percent of thecrashes involved poor observation bya driver.Surprisingly, only four percent of
crashes were deemed to involve adriver going too fast.‘‘The solution is very simple — be
aware, look where you are going andtake some care of others,’’ says AAspokesperson Dylan Thomsen.‘‘Drivers can’t assume that pedes-
trians won’t step out unexpectedlyand pedestrians can’t assume thatdrivers have seen them. Make eyecontact to be sure.’’The groups most at risk from being
hurt by a pedestrian crash are youngpeople and the elderly — 26 percent ofthe pedestrians hurt in the Waikato in
2012 were aged under 15.The majority of crashes happened
on weekdays, and 3-6pm was gener-ally the highest-risk period, so this is acritical time to be alert for theunexpected.‘‘The AA was surprised to see that
out of 80 crashes, just three involved avehicle going too fast and the vastmajority happen when either a pedes-trian or driver make a mistake anddon’t see each other.‘‘One moment of inattention could
lead to a life-changing crash, which iswhy it’s so important that driversdouble-check for pedestrians andpedestrians double-check for vehiclesbefore they step onto the road.’’‘‘The message from the AA: Take
care, expect the unexpected and keepsafe.’’
WRC consulting onroad safety strategyA
high level action plan toreduce the region’s road-related fatalities and seri-
ous injury crashes has beenapproved by the regional trans-port committee.Waikato Regional Council has
spent the past year consultingwith the New Zealand TransportAgency (NZTA) and keystakeholders, including localcouncils, on the 2013-16 roadsafety strategy. This strategy uses the ‘safe
system’ methodology to identifythe key focus areas for roadsafety. It sets the policy framework
and a plan of action to beimplemented across the regionover the next three years and alsodefines the work that will need tohappen over the medium term inorder to best position the regionfor the future.Regional Council travel behavi-
our change co-ordinator Jo Carlingsaid the Waikato was leading theway nationally in its co-ordinatedand strategic approach to roadsafety initiatives. The committee heard that a key
priority for the region over the nextthree years will be the develop-ment of a regionally consistent‘one network’ approach to roadsafety risk assessment andinterventions. This will in turn assist with the
roll-out of consistent regionalspeed management programmes, safety infrastructure, road usereducation and fleet safety pro-grammes.Committee chairman and Wai-
kato regional councillor NormBarker said there are many factors
responsible for Waikato’s highroad toll, such as the physicalroad ing env i ronment , h ighvolumes of traffic, behaviour ofroad users and the safety of thevehicles themselves.‘‘The responsibility for address-
ing these issues lies with politi-cians, planners, engineers, police, professional drivers and the gen-eral public.’’Last year 65 people died on
Waikato roads and many hundredsmore were hospitalised with seri-ous injuries resulting fromcrashes.‘‘Two years ago this committee
made road safety one of the topthree strategic transport prioritiesfor the region. We have a clearvision for safety and have set sometough targets, with an aim to halveour road toll by 2040.’’The strategy also has a focus on
alcohol and drug impaired drivingand the committee will continue tolobby central government for areduced legal blood alcohol limitfor all adult drivers and randomdrug testing by police. The ‘safe system’ approach,
used in the Waikato since 2009, isin line with international bestpractice and the Government’sSafer Journeys strategy.A key priority over the next
three years will be embedding the‘safe system’ approach into allroad safety planning. The approach aims to create a
forgiving road system resulting ina reduction in fatal and seriouscrashes — one in which humanerror does not result in a loss of life— and has been instrumental insignificantly reducing road traumain many European countries.

Mazda6 wonder continues
BY DEAN TAYLOR
Last month I drove thetop-of-the-rangeMazda6 Limited from
Wilksbrooke Motors andfound there wasn’t enoughroom in my article to explainthe wonders of thecompany’s most technologi-cal creation. This month the journey
continues with a switch tothe Mazda6 GSX— the mid-spec model. While theLimited, in either Sedan orWagon, only comes with thefantastic SKYACTIV 2.2 litre, four cylinder turbodiesel, the GSX has the option of aSKYACTIV 2.5 litre, straightfour petrol engine.Like the Limited, both
engines have i-Stop and theSKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speedautomatic.The petrol engine makes
marginally more power thanthe diesel (138kW —129kW), but significantlyless torque (250Nm —420Nm). Both are excellentfigures and both enginesperform amazingly .Mazda has certainly hit
the economy, with perform-ance, nail on the head aswell. The petrol 6 returns
6.6l/100km utilising a myr-iad of technological aids —including the wizard i-Eloopwhich I explained lastmonth. The diesel does even
better — 5.4l/100km.There’s about a $2Kpremium for the diesel —
running costs for the aver-age driver work out aboutthe same according towww.energywise.govt.nz soit’s down to preference. Also on offer is the GLX,
with the same fantasticdiesel in both wagon andsedan and the two-litre pet-rol engine as an option inthe wagon.Even that is a hi-spec
model compared to a few
years back.The GSX has Bluetooth
phone and audio connec-tivity, dual zone climatecontrol, satellite navigation, leather features andpremium cloth seats, autoheadlights, rain sensingwipers... the list goes on.We know the new car is
great looking, and theMazda6 has always beengreat on the road — and is
getting even better.Safety hasn’t been com-
promised for economy —the Mazda6 has a full arrayof strengthening, cleverbelts and airbags to protectoccupants, as well as moretechnology in the form ofsafety features to assist thedriver. These include rear view
camera, hill start assist andon the Limited cruise control
with radar technology toadjust speed to cars in front, frontal object warning withbrake assist, lane departurewarning, rear traffic warningand blind spot monitoring. If you need to brake
suddenly, the Mazda6 haz-ard lights flash to attractthe attention of otherdrivers. What will they think of
next?
Developing abetter publictransport model
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) isseeking feedback from public transportstakeholders on proposed changes to its Procure-
mentmanual and operational policies to implement thenew Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM).The new model has been developed in order to
increase value for money from public transportinvestment through a combination of planning, funding, procurement, and partnering tools andincentives which will help regions and public transportoperators build stronger collaborative relationships.
