WINE ON TAP FAQ

Q. Is wine on tap lower quality than bottled wine?

A. Not at all. As demand grows, wineries are making

more of their premium wines available in kegs.

Packaging wine in kegs makes it easier to maintain

high quality standards, avoiding oxidization by

shielding the wine from exposure to air until

it is served. Kegs are also less susceptible to

temperature variation, which can negatively affect

the quality of wine.

Q. Is it economical?

A. Very. Wine by the keg is less expensive for wineries

to produce than bottled wine, allowing them to pass

the savings on to their foodservice customers. It

also allows restaurants and bars to serve wine by

the glass without the inevitable waste that occurs

with open bottles. Typically, the cost of the system

can be recovered within a year, when the loss of

product associated with bottled wine is eliminated.

Q. Is it environmentally-friendly?

A. Absolutely. Each keg holds the equivalent of 26

bottles of wine. Removing those 26 bottles from

circulation also eliminates around 39 pounds of

packaging waste from boxes, bottles, foil wraps,

corks and labels. A steel keg has a lifespan of

30 years, and in that time will have replaced one

ton of glass bottles. And, the use of one steel keg

eliminates as much CO2 from the environment as

28 trees do.
