From the TCF Director I am delighted to welcome you to the Tasmanian Craft Fair 2014. From humble beginnings in the 1980s, the TCF has developed a reputation both nationally and internationally as one of the most prestigious celebrations of fine art and craftsmanship in

Australia. We are proud of our focus on excellence and our ability to attract artists and crafts people of the highest calibre to showcase their trades, arts and handicrafts in our beautiful town.

This year’s event features luthiers Billy Tarrant, Bruce Trappes, PW Guitars and Adam Edwards. Each instrument maker brings their own unique knowledge and inspiration to their craft. We are also featuring Robert MacMillan, who sources fine Tasmanian tonewoods. Our Emerging Artist for 2014 is wildlife artist, Robin Wingrave. Robin has recently returned from the island of Rodrigues where he was commissioned to record the return of the giant saddleback tortoise.

New to this year we are welcoming a Heritage Artist. Dr Christina Henri is the inaugural Heritage Artist. Christina is renowned worldwide for her work Roses from the Heart which explores the history of convict women in Australia.

Other highlights at this year’s Fair include the Rotary Textile Quilting Exhibition, former Emerging Artist Michael Thomson demonstrating steam bending as well as plenty of activities for the whole family.

The annual Awards for Excellence will be presented on October 31, including the $10,000 Premier’s Award, which is an acquisitive award open to all stallholders.

With each year we strive to deliver the best experiences for fairgoers and stallholders alike and this year we are conducting some research to find out a little bit more about your experience at the Tasmanian Craft Fair, why you come along and what you would like to see at the event. I hope you enjoy the fair as much as the Craft Fair committee and I enjoy bringing it to you.

Christina Henri Christina Henri brings to life the stories of our convict

past through the creation and collection of convict

bonnets. With over 23,500 in her collection, Christina

takes you back in time and introduces you to the

women who shaped Australia.

Christina Henri’s Roses from the Heart installation

examines the exploitation of mainly white ‘slaves’ -

convict women - and considers the contemporary

exploitation of humans, especially female workers, via

sweatshops in the manufacturing industry.

Christina encourages Craft Fair attendees of all ages to

contribute to the collection by purchasing products and

materials from the Fair to create bonnets. Bonnets given

to Christina will be added to the collection.

‘Some of the most prized bonnets have been made by

children. Their unique and creative take on the bonnet

can often be truly stunning’, says Christina.

Christina deliberately chooses to invite personal tributes

to be made rather than mass orders so that each bonnet

is a testament to the individuality of the woman for

whom it is created.

Each year the Craft Fair director chooses selected artists

to exhibit. Craft Fair director Maree Matanle is delighted

to bring Christina’s work to Deloraine to be part of the

fair and believes it will be of great interest to fairgoers.

EmERGInG ARTIST fEATuRE ARTISTSLuthiersWhen you take some of the finest acoustic timbers located right here in Tasmania and place them in the hands of gifted craftspeople the result is some of the best musical instruments in the world. From cigar box instruments through to lap-steels, six-string guitars and bouzoukis there is sure to be something to bring out your inner musician. Whether you’re just starting out, or looking to add a new axe to your arsenal you will be sure to find something that fits your needs.

Tarrant GuitarsBilly Tarrant creates a wide range of guitars in all different shapes and sizes including 6, 8, and 12 string acoustic, hollow neck weissenborns, ukuleles and irish bouzoukis.Tarrant Guitars are played both in Australia and overseas and are built to handle the home, serious stage work and the studio.

Devil Guitars TasmaniaA change in lifestyle allowed Bruce Trappes from Devil Guitars Tasmania the opportunity to follow his passion for music. By popular demand Bruce evolved his other Tasmanian small business to focus on making quality traditional instruments for popular bluesmen throughout the world.

PW GuitarsWith a combined history of over fifty years working with fine Tasmanian timbers, Matt and Steve from PW Guitars bring a wealth of knowledge to these exquisite and unique timbers. This formidable team produce instruments that inspire creativity and passion in others. Matt and Steve walk the delicate line between form, function, beauty and catastrophe.

Tasmanian TonewoodsRobert MacMillan provides selectively harvested and salvaged old-growth Tasmanian tonewoods timbers and veneer supplies Australia’s largest supplier of tonewood. Much of the wood Robert sources comes from private land and would usually be burnt as firewood or scrapped but is instead up-cycled into fine musical instruments.

Tasmanian ViolinsTasmanian violin maker, Adam Edwards is proud to present his range of handcrafted instruments including violins, electric violins, hardanger fiddles and viola d’ amores. A Churchhill Fellow, Adam has created instruments for some of the finest musicians the world has known.

Robin WingraveTalented wildlife artist Robin Wingrave reinterprets nature through charcoal and watercolour. From a very early age, Robin felt a strong connection to the natural world and would spend all his time sketching the plants and animals in the countryside around his home.

Starting out in 1999 as the Artist in Residence at the renowned Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree region of Northern Queensland, Robin’s work soon became recognised by fellow artists and the local community. In the following years he went on to exhibit at various venues and wildlife orientated conferences in the region.

In 2002 Robin was invited to hold his first overseas exhibitions at some of the major zoos in North America.

Robin’s work has been showcased at the famous San Diego Zoo and also the Oregon, Rhode Island and Seattle zoos.

After some encouragement from a fellow artist, Robin made what was to be a natural transition into both watercolour and oils. In 2004 Robin travelled as the field artist to Papua New Guinea on three expeditions with the Rhode Island based Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program resulting in his work appearing in the books, “Quest for the Tree Kangaroo” .

Robin has recently returned from the island of Rodrigues where he was commissioned to produce watercolours of the saddleback giant tortoise. Robin’s passion and respect for nature, along with his captivating and inspiring artistic sensibility ensure that a Robin Wingrave original will make a fine addition to any art collection.

I’d like to warmly welcome you to the Tasmanian Craft Fair, home to one of the largest displays of arts and crafts in Australia.

Now in its 34th year, the Fair is a fabulous opportunity for artisans to display their works and give live demonstrations of their craft.

Importantly, the event draws more than 25,000 people to Deloraine, including Tasmanian, interstate and overseas visitors.

Held over four days, the Fair provides a significant boost for local businesses.

It has become a staple on the local events calendar and is a major draw card for the region.

I commend the Rotary Club of Deloraine for its dedication to hosting this event, which requires the coordination of around 230 artists and craftspeople, as well as 1000 volunteers.

It gives me great pleasure to support the Tasmanian Craft Fair with $10,000 for the Premier’s Award for Excellence.

Will Hodgman MP

PREMIER, TASMANIA

SCulpTInG dEmOnSTRATIOn And TCf GIfT by Michael ThomsonMichael’s passion for design is driven by the attitude that, in nature, everything is unique, so creating a piece of furniture is a similar process.

To create “is to produce or bring to existence an object that has never existed before”. When asked where his designs were conceived, the answer is predominately. “Look around you, nature has the solution for everything”. He finds if you want a pleasing form, it literally confronts you everyday in your natural surrounds.

With a vast and diverse background to draw on, his studies in engineering and a solid knowledge base for sound construction possibilities, this blended with a passion for everything natural, it is understandable that there is a strong influence towards an organic style in his furniture.

Michael’s philosophy is to create pieces with a tactile element that invites the viewer to experience the timber in its beauty.

Michael will be creating a unique piece during the Craft Fair. He will also have a range of small and large items available for sale.

The Windows on The Arts in Deloraine (WOAD) team in partnership with the Tasmanian Craft Fair invite you to Venue 14, the shop windows of Deloraine’s ‘high street’ - Emu Bay Rd.

This year’s WOAD, with its White on White theme offers a fresh approach to the exhibition of local artistic talent whilst at the same time catering to our communal love of wandering the streets of a beautiful town – stopping occasionally, of course, for coffee and cake or finding a unique item in one of its many stores.

The beauties of the Meander Valley have long attracted and inspired those with an artistic mindset and this year’s WOAD displays not only the versatility of this locally inspired art and craft but also the wide range of artistic disciplines and endeavors engaged in by the community of artists.

WOAD 14 curator Bec Watson stated, “White is such an emotive symbol that has unique associations for all of us. Unlike other languages, the English language only has one word for it, yet there are more variations of white paint, for instance, than for any other colour. On the light spectrum it incorporates and reflects all wavelengths and hence places no limit on the expression of all colours on the artist’s palette. White’s inclusiveness of all colours offers us a profound symbol of a well-adjusted enjoyable community”.

We hope that you enjoy and are inspired by WOAD 14.

WOAD 14 is hosted by Arts Deloraine, the local branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts, in partnership with the Tasmanian Craft Fair. We gratefully acknowledge the support from our sponsors – Tasmanian Craft Fair, The Regional Arts Fund, Tasmanian Regional Arts, Tasmanian Alkaloids, Deloraine Primary School, Deloraine High School, the Artisans, Community volunteers and the Retailers of Deloraine.

For more than 20 years, the Deloraine Working Sheepdog Club has held sheepdog trials at the Showgrounds (Venue 7) as part of the Tasmanian Craft Fair.

In 2014 about 30 handlers and 65 dogs will take part in the trials from November 1-3.

The competition will be held in three sections - Open, Improver and Novice and will be judged by Bruce Dolliver, of New Norfolk. Michael Grant of the Deloraine Working Sheepdog Club said three fresh sheep are used per dog, meaning the sheep do not become over-tired or stressed. Mr Grant says sheepdog trials, which were once the domain of farmers and shepherds is becoming increasingly popular as a sport. ‘It’s a great opportunity to travel throughout the state and interstate,’ he says. ‘And it’s a great way to test your skills.’
