PROGRAM TITLE: Deformation (Pack of 4 programs)

DATE: 1979-02-01

AUTHOR: Matti Leppäranta

ORGANIZATION: Institute of Marine Research, Finland

INQUIRIES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO: YJatti Leppäranta

ADDRESS: Institute of Marine ResearchPO :BOX 166SF-00141 Helsinki 14Finland

DESCRIPTION: The pack has been initially programmed for sea ice fielddeformation analysis (two-dimensional) and it is applicable for any geophysical material.

The input data consists of time-series of spatial displacements of arbitrary number of e.g. radar reflectors, reflectorprisms. The programs first smooth the time-series and thenestimate through linear regression the 1st and 2nd ordercoefficients of the Taylor-polynomial of rate of deformationgradient.

The output list consists of time-series rate of deformationgradient, strain-rate tensor, strain-rate invariants andprincipal axis form, vorticity, divergence of rate of deformation and divergence of strain-rate.

Coordinates, width, dilution, ambient densityand velocity is printed for chosen steplength along' jet-axis" Neutral depth(entraillment depth) anti extremal depth is given out. Summary tables may be printedafter several calculations.

Input: Constants, discharge data for jet, density profiles. 1 set of constantsup to 100 density profiles may be saved on files.

Remarks: Extremal dcpth is calculated a) directly by differential equations.b)--by neglecting friction and mixing after neutral depth.

DESCRlPTlON OF WHAT THE PROGRAM DOES:(Preferab1y in Eng1ish and less than 250 words; what computationsare made, formulas used, special input/output formats, final product. )This program calculates time and heights for high and low watersduring a ca1endar year with respect to certain ports or tidalstations. Usua11y it gives predicted values for producing tidetab1es a few years in advance. - The system used refers to U.S.method. A description of this is given in

THE INTERNATIONAL HYDROGRAPHIe REVIEW, vo1.XLII(1),95-103 (1965).TIDE AND TIDAL CURRENT PREDICTION BY HIGH SPEED DIGITAL COMPUTER.

A modified version of the chief program produces hour1y heightsor some other equidistant form, if so wanted.

For additional information see p.16.

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THE PROGRAM DOES:(Preferably in English and less than 250 words; what computationsare made, formulas used, special input/output formats, final product.)This program relates series of current observations to times ofhigh water at a suitable reference port in order to preserve themost representative values for further use. After having listed, tested and corrected, converted and listed again the pack of data,

. the program decomposes and forms local mean or interpolated valuesfor every hour from 6 hour before to 6 hour after the high water inthe reference port. This is done for every high water, and a restcurrent value is also formed as a sliding mean over 25 hours. Thengeneral means are calculated "vertically" over groups of preferably57 high waters or periods equivalent to one lunation (29 days).

Recomposed values with standard deviation form the final resultof the current program.

DESCRIPTION OF l}HAT THE PROGRAt·1 DOES:(Prefcrably in English and less than 250 words~ what comoutationsare made, formulas used, special input/output formats, final product.)The program reads data as symbo1ic input in free format, processes them and printsout prirnary presentations for proof-reading and reporting.Data is structured in records, each storing a param~ter set. The records are sorte~

by a set of idcntificator va1ues contained within the record. A set of records isgrouped under a master.record, which contains additional identificators and datacomrnon to the group. .Lengthand content of masterrecord anddatarecord, and ru1es for input and print, are given by user as symbolic description. The program contains automatie errorchecking fc,lt:ures, some activated by user at choice., New parameters may becalculatcd from inputdata and added to records by exchangeable set of functions. The data arG stored on a simple database for later rctrieval.Applications: One application is for data from oceanographic stations with severalmeasuring depths. One datarecord contains all parameter va lues for one sampie(one dcpth). Nasterrecord contains station identification, 'time, and surfaceobservations.

Method: The method is based on linear interpolation. The area is divided intoadjacentrectangles which determine a grid. The interpolation is made on a polygonalsurface which approximates the ideal surface. The number of plane surface elementschosen that constitute the polygonal surface decides the smoothness of theapproxixr.ation.

Features: The concept of "dead zone" is introduced in order to eliIdnate automatically those parts of the area which are not relevant. It is also possible toapproximate any physical border of the area xranually by means of elements of ther, rid. The oscillations usually encountered in contourmappir-g alcng the boundariescf the area are suppressed.

Lind tation: Basically there is no 1i.mitations Vv'i. th regard to number of measurementstations accepted or grid and polygon surface complexity. For practical reasons, the irr.plemented version is dimensioned to 200 measurement stations. The grid islimited to 3D columns and 50 rows. The number·of intersections between adjacentnlnne surface elements of the polygonal surface is preset to 300.

DESCRIPTION OF HIIAT 'l'HE PROGRl\M DOES: ,(Prcferably in English and less than 250 words; what computationsare.~ade" formulas uscd, special input/output formats, final product.)

Method: The given ares. is covered by a grid, which is built fron the measurementlines (columns) and a set of chosen orthogonal lines (rows). Linear interpolationis performed separately along each coham to calculate nodes in the rectangulargrid. 1hen the grid is used as framework to draw level lines.

Feature: The concept of "dead zone" is introduced in order to eliminate autorratically those parts of the area which are not relevant. This feature mayaiso beused to blank parts of thearea manually according to specified input.

LimitationSI Rasically there is no lirritation with regard to the grid description. From a practical point of wiev, the number of measurement lines is preset to 350and the number of measurement points on each line is preset to 20. The correspondingnumber of rows of the grid is preset to 20.

This system makes itpossible to store and handle different record types and complex relationships benlecnthema Retri.eval from the system may be performed by various access lines. To obtain easy communications between different user groups and betwecn user andsystem, a special nomenclatur system (based on the swedish RUBIN-principle) has beenimplemented. In this system each specie is denominated in threc different ways -by its universal latin name, by an universal code number and by a short letter codefreely choosen by euch institution.
