Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHowdy all! Summer's moving along pret-

ty quickly and this past week seems even faster. Not only do we have Tidbits to get out to all of readers, but now our garden is starting produce some food for our shelves.

Lynette and I were really excited to take our first harvest of green beans and get some pints canned for later. From the looks of the bean plants, we should get a healthy amount of canned

beans this year. We also have squash set-ting on, tomatoes starting to come, carrots, peas (not sure if we will have much for peas... I keep eating the ripe ones right out of the garden... shhhh, don't tell Lynette!

Speaking of the love of my life... it's that time of year again, so wish her a happy birthday this week when you see her. Her birthday is on Thursday, the 31st, but I have been married long enough to know that you will have to

• It was Flannery O’Connor, noted American writer of novels and short stories, who made the following ob-servation: “Everywhere I go I’m

asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don’t stifle enough of them.”

• In Saudi Arabia, there is an entire police unit dedicated solely to the pursuit of crimes of witchcraft.

• Lee DeForest, known as the Father of Radio, said in 1926, “While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially I consider it an impossibility, a de-velopment of which we need to waste little time dreaming.”

• Eleanor Ritchey was the granddaughter of Philip John Bayer, founder of Quaker State Oil. She was the sole inheritor of her

by Samantha Weaver

grandfather’s fortune, and she had no children of her own. When she died in 1968 she was worth $12 million. Other than some shoes (1,700 pairs) and stationery (1,200 boxes) that she left to the Salvation Army, her entire estate was used to create a trust for the 150 stray dogs she had adopted. The pets lived in luxury, dying of old age one by one, until 1984, when the last one -- the richest dog in the country -- also succumbed. The remainder of the inheritance then went to Auburn University.

• If you’re planning a trip to Syracuse, N.Y., you might want to take a detour about 35 miles east to the small town of Verona. There you can visit the world’s smallest church -- but don’t plan to go in and have a seat. Cross Island Chapel is only 6 feet by 3.5 feet. The minister can stand inside, but everyone else has to stay outside.

HOLLYWOOD -- The super-bombastic Cher kicked off her “Dressed to Kill” tour in March (recently in Ontario, Canada; Seattle; and San Jose, California) to some of the best reviews of her career. The critics loved Cher’s golden gladiator with a blond wig; her vampire, with a bat-shaped headdress and fangs; and her tribute to the swinging ‘60s, replete in red mini skirt and faux fur coat.

The 72-show tour will net her more than $42 million. She’ll soon be playing New York (Madison Square Garden Sept. 20-21), New Jersey, D.C., Mas-sachusetts, Michigan, Pennsyl-vania, New Hampshire, Virgin-ia, Illinois, Indiana, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Her tour ends Nov. 3 in Wichita, Kansas. Also knocking them dead is Cher’s opening act, Cyndi Lauper, who makes her entrance wrapped in a rainbow

flag, showing her “True Colors.” If you live anywhere near where Cher is stopping by, don’t miss her show ... it may be her last farewell tour

• • •Even on tour, Cher is stirring up controversy. Well-known

for being an animal activist, Cher has called on her 2 million Twitter followers to lash out at Sea World, texting, “SEA WORLD IS A HEINOUS CORP. THAT PRETENDS 2 CARE 4 WHALES. IT IS (money) & ONLY (money) THAT MO-TIVATES THEM.” Last year she offered a $500,000 reward for the L.A. Zoo’s release of Billy the Elephant, an animal described as “overweight, depressed and sexually frustrated.” A judge ruled in 2012 that Billy could remain in her enclosure, but Cher hasn’t given up the fight to see her released.

• • •The Disney Corp., which owns ABC Television, is hard at

work preparing both a sequel and a Broadway musical of its billion-dollar baby “Frozen.” But in the meantime, Disney is spinning the characters of Anna, Elsa and Kristoff into the fourth season of its show “Once Upon a Time.” Newcomer Elizabeth Lail will play Anna, and Scott Michael Foster, of the ABC Family series “Greek,” will play Kristoff. The role of Elsa hasn’t been cast yet. Now the question is, will kids, the biggest fans of “Frozen,” watch this show, or will their parents tune it out because they’re sick of “Frozen,” which their kids watch night and day?

• • •Looks like Warners dropped the ball on the ad campaign for

Clint Eastwood’s great new film, “Jersey Boys.” It succeeded in getting the over-50 demographic into the theaters, but the younger audiences are not showing up because they don’t know the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Come on, Clint, you played ramrod Rowdy Yates on “Rawhide,” you must know a way of herding them in like cattle!

Collecting - continued from page 1.

is “Collectible Shoes of Glass” by Earlene Wheatley (Collector Books). Prices for the shoes depend on age, condition and desirability, but some can command hundreds of dollars each.

• • •Q: I was stationed in Germany dur-

ing the 1950s and began buying Hum-mel figurines when I could find them. I didn’t intend to be such a collector, but eventually discovered that I had amassed more than 75 individual pieces. Can you recommend a good price guide so I can determine values for insurance purposes? -- Robert, Madison, Wisc.

A: There are several excellent guides. My personal favorite is “The Official M.I. Hummel Price Guide: Figurines & Plates” by Heidi Ann Von Recklinghauser. It features more than 2,000 illustrations, and updated list-ings and values for most of the edi-tions, including the more recent 2000 series. Published by Krause Books, it is $29.99 and available at www.krausebooks.com. The author’s family has collected Hummels for more than three generations, and she is an ac-tive member of the international M.I. Hummel Club.

• • •Q: I have a collection of autographed

photos, mostly of television stars of the 1950s and ‘60s. I am curious to know how much my signed pictures are worth. Can you recommend an ex-pert? -- Susan, West Memphis, Ark.

A: Brian Kathenes of National Ap-praisal Consultants, LLC, is an certi-fied appraiser of autographs, manu-scripts and historical documents. He can help you determine the value of your collection. Contact is P.O. Box 482, Hope, PA 07844; [email protected]; and www.NACVal-ue.com.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can dogs get sunburned? -- Greg D., New York

DEAR GREG: Yes, they absolutely can. A dog’s fur provides only a little protection from the sun, and exposed parts of its skin -- such as the nose, ears, belly and paws -- can get burned as quickly as any human’s skin burns, within 30 minutes (or less) of direct summer sunlight. And dogs are at risk of getting skin cancer, just as humans are.

Short-haired and light or white-haired dogs are espe-cially vulnerable to sunburn.

So, how can you keep your pet from getting burned? Preventing direct exposure is the best way -- that means keeping dogs inside during the hottest part of the day. Keeping dogs hydrated also is important, so always have cool water on hand.

When they do go out, especially if it’s sunny or you will be out for awhile, put sunblock on those danger areas, like the nose and ears, the tops of their paws and their belly.

Pet sunscreen is available at stores like Petco. In a pinch, children’s or baby-safe sunblock is better to use on dogs than sunblock developed for adult humans. It’s gentler on your dog’s skin and causes less of a reaction.

Don’t use sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or PABA, which if ingested can cause health problems like anemia in some pets.

Reapply sunscreen to the dog every couple of hours when outside, and keep your dog in the shade or inside as much as possible.
