ABOUT THE ORGANISEREstablished in 1992, Taylor's Law School (TLS) is one of the top private law schools in Malaysia. The school currently offers a PhD for Law as well as Master of Laws in two specialised fields namely Healthcare and Medical Law and International Business and Trade Law. It has an added distinction of being the first private law school to introduce and run a Summer Programme on the Malaysian Legal System. Students here are trained in an environment that is challenging and thought-provoking, but at the same time, fits the needs of the profession. Students of TLS are also instilled with a passion for community service and a heart for the welfare of society. As a law school that highly values quality, the school has a team of well qualified lecturers armed with years of relevant industry experience and offers good industry linkages through its industry advisory panel for internship opportunities.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTSThe Malaysian Legal System Summer Programme is organised through collaboration with prestigious law firms to include the following: • Seminars on the Malaysian Constitution and legal instructions such as the Malaysian Parliament, the Attorney General, the Judiciary,

the Syariah Courts and the legal profession.• Field Trips to the Parliament, High Court, Syariah Courts, Palace of Justice (where judicial courts and offices are housed), Attorney

General’s Chambers, Legal Aid Center, Bar Council and the Orang Asli (Indigenous People) Settlement.• Internship placement at leading law firms in Malaysia, including those with international links.

LEARNING OUTCOMESUpon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:• Acquire a sound understanding of the nature, scope and features of the Malaysian Legal System• Appreciate the differences between foreign and Malaysian legal institutions• Demonstrate an understanding on the Malaysian Legal System in a comparative context• Cultivate social skills and teamwork as they produce a presentation collaboratively in diverse groups • Establish mutual friendships and build a network with students from different countries

ASSESSMENT Students will be required to prepare a 20 to 25 minutes group presentation on their reflection developed throughout the duration of the programme. The group reflective presentation will be evaluated on a pass or fail basis.

PRE-REQUISITECompletion of either Year 1 or Year 2 of LLB studies.

Additional Learning Outcome for 3-week programmeThe internship programme provides students with an opportunity to gain experience and insight into the day to day work of lawyers while gaining insight into the inner workings of a real legal firm. These placements cover a broad spectrum of legal firms giving students various options and exposures. In principal, students will be able to reflect on their experience gained during the internship and their adaptation to a new culture.

Programme Fees: USD1200 (2-week programme)USD1500 (3-week programme)Inclusive of accommodation, group airport transfer, experiential learning (workshop, field trips, seminars), community outreach programme, welcome and farewell reception and cultural tours.

Exclusion: Flight tickets, travel and medical insurance, and living costs are to be borne by the students. Proof of purchase is required for travel and medical insurance.

Minimum Participants: 15 students for the programme to commence

Taylor’s University Summer Programme is offered at the equivalent of 3 ECTS. Students who have successfully completed the Programme will be issued with a Certificate of Participation. Should transfer of credits be required, please check with your home institution if the certificate can be accepted alongside with a verification letter from the organising school.

KUALA LUMPUR CITY CENTRE (KLCC)Located in the KL city centre, the Petronas Twin Towers’ architecture is Islamic-inspired and the buildings primarily house the corporate headquarters of the Petronas Company and other offices. Petronas Twin Towers has two identical 88-storey buildings whereby both towers are joined at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 58.4 metre-long, double-decker Skybridge.

CENTRAL MARKETBuilt in 1928, the Central Market, also known as Pasar Seni is just a short walk away from Petaling Street, along Jalan Hang Kasturi. The focus for the city’s artistic community, inside the building is a warren of boutiques, handicraft and souvenir stalls with traders selling local merchandise such as authentic Malaysian batik prints and more.

BATU CAVESBatu Caves is a limestone hill comprising of three major caves and a number of smaller ones. This 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside and around the main caves and are frequented by visitors from all over the world throughout the year. Incorporated with interior limestone formations said to be around 400 million years old, the temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus.

SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD BUILDINGConstructed entirely of brick, the Sultan Abdul Samad building features strong gothic, western and Moorish-style influences with an imposing porch, graceful arches, curved colonnades topped with shiny copper cupolas and a domineering 41.2m-high clock tower. It is frequently seen as the backdrop for Malaysia’s annual Independence Day parades, which takes place at Dataran Merdeka.
