Early Life St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was born

in Grenoble, France in 1769. She was born into a family with wealth,

and political connections.

Education

St. Rose was given her basic education from her mother.

From age twelve she received a religious education at The Convent of Visitation nuns in Grenoble.

Joining the Convent

In 1788, when she was only nine – teen, she became a nun, and joined the convent.

Life After the Convent Closed

During the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution, religious communities were outlawed and her convent was closed.

After the convent closed she spent the next ten years hiding priests from revolutionaries, and caring for the sick.

She also did other forms of good deeds, and charity work.

She stayed faithful to God throughout her life no matter what.

Re-forming the Convent

After the terror ended, Mother Duchesne tried to get together with a group of nuns and re - open the convent. However, most nuns had left.

The Sacred Heart Society

The group of nuns who stayed, got together with Mother Duchesne, and joined The Sacred Heart Society.

Later, in 1804 the convent re – opened as The Second House of Sacred Heart Nuns.

Sacred Heart in America

Later, in 1818 at the age of forty – nine Mother Duchesne was sent to the United States to open up the first Sacred Heart Society in America.

In total she opened six Sacred Heart Societies in America.

Indians

At age seventy – one Mother Duchesne began a school for Indians.

They later came to call her “The Woman Who Always Prays.”

Death & Canonization

Mother Duchesne later died at age eighty – three.

She was beatified in 1940. She was canonized in 1988. Her Feast day is November 18.

Interesting facts

She has a school dedicated to her.

She is the patron saint of: Opposition of Church authorities, Diocese of Springfield – Cape Giradeau, and Missouri.

Growing up she lived in a large house with her wealthy family.
