ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This term paper has been a great source of inspiration for me. This was a very interesting projectand I learnt a lot from this project. This term paper not only cleared my concepts about thetaxonomy of appearance representations but also raised a sense of confidence in me. Overcomingthe hurdles during this project was quite challenging.

I would like to express my gratitude to all my friends and my teacher Mr. Rohit Kumar who were agreat source of inspiration and encouragement for me and helped a lot during the course of thisterm paper and it was with his guidance that I was able to fulfill the present work.

INTRODUCTION

What is Taxonomy?

Taxonomy is the practice and science of classification according to a pre-determined system, with the resulting catalog used to provide a conceptualframework for discussion, analysis, or information retrieval. In theory, thedevelopment of a good taxonomy takes into account the importance of separatingelements of a group (taxon) into subgroups (taxa) that are mutually exclusive, unambiguous, and taken together, include all possibilities. In practice, a good

taxonomy should be simple, easy to remember, and easy to use. Taxonomy should provide a useful means for both analyzing what exists and for guiding newdevelopments. It should also provide means to new directions.

Radiometry and Appearance Models

Comprehending the visual world around us requires us to understand the role of materials.

In essence, we think of the appearance of a material as being a function of how thatmaterial interacts with light. The material may simply reflect light, or it may exhibitmore complex phenomena such as subsurface scattering.
