To start ourMeet YOURLocal featureI ‘d l ike tointroduce youto Martin Ward,a member ofour communityand on behalfof the Norwichand NorfolkBranch of theCampaign forReal Ale(CAMRA) is the
organiser of the Norwich Beer Festival.I t is one of the biggest beer festivals inthe country and most definitely one ofthe most popular.
How did you get involved?About 22, 23 years ago I met AlanEdwards, who organised the beerfestival back then. He asked me if I wasdoing anything in October and did Ifancy helping out serving pints? I tsteam rolled after that. I joined CAMRAabout 1 991 and since then I 've been ageneral committee member, vice chair, chairman (for 7 years, I think), and thisis my 9th year as beer festival organiser.
What does that role entail? There are many aspects of planning thatgo unseen by the majority and go on allyear round. My job is to look after theinfrastructure of the festival and to makesure everything is at the right place atthe right time when the festival comesround. I t involves talking to tradepeople and organising almost
everything from J Cloths to insurance, health & safety and reporting back tothe branch.
Do you get to take it easy during thefestival week then? There is sti l l plenty for me to do. I l iaisebetween the people in charge of thebeer, the entertainment, who look afterour customers and who look after ourvolunteers. I answer a multitude ofcustomer queries and deal with theinevitable issues that crop up in anevent of this size. I ’ve even beenknown to go back to my first festival joband serve a pint every now and then.
You mentioned volunteers, how isthe festival staffed?Volunteer is the key word, nobody getspaid. Many of our volunteers give uptheir hard earned holiday to work at thefestival. We have volunteers that turnup year after year, some have workedthere longer than I have and keepcoming back as they enjoy it so much.Without them there would be no festival.
The festival wil l be held at St. Andrew'sand Blackfriars' Halls from October 29thto November 3rd 201 2.
I f you would l ike to get involved contactSadie the Staffing Organiser andmention you saw it in YOUR Localeyes.

YOUR Local RecipeAll foods have a time of year when they are attheir best, eating seasonally means tastier, fresher, better value food The foods below arecurrently in their prime but this months focus ison one of my new favourites:-
CELERIACWhat Is It?Celeriac looks knobbly and strange which canbe off putting but if you get past that you'l l find avegetable that tastes l ike celery and parsley withnutty overtones and has all the versati l i ty ofpotato. You can boil , mash, bake, roast it, oreven deep fry it. I t takes 20 minutes to boil androasts in about 40.Buy ItAt its best September to Apri l .Select ItI t should be firm and feel heavy for its size.Avoid discoloured ones.Store ItKeep it in the salad drawer of your fridge.Try itOven Baked Celeriac Chips - Serves 6
