robert harwardChief exeCutive OffiCerLOCkheed Martin GLObaL inC.

Q. lockheed has had a presence in the uaE for quite some time. Can you tell us a little about the company’s history here?

a. Lockheed Martin is a trusted partner here in the UAE with more than 50 years of experience. During that time we have developed an understanding of how to work with government and industry to achieve national goals and have demonstrated our commitment to developing business ventures, strategic initiatives and mutually beneficial local partnerships.

Q. what project of lockheed’s in the uaE are you most proud of?

a. From tactical aircraft and integrated air and missile defense to cyber security and airport management sys-tems, we are bringing proven performance to our partners in the region, whether in the defense or commercial sectors. Partnerships are a great force multiplier and bring the best insights and innovations into alliance, pro-mote local jobs and drive global economic growth. In this respect I am particularly proud of our recently opened Center for Innovation and Security Solutions in Masdar City. This state-of-the-art facility will facilitate development of further partnerships between Lockheed Martin and our UAE colleagues, enabling us to more easily work together to leverage innovation in order to enhance the security of the UAE. It’s the first Lockheed Martin collab-oration center of its kind outside the United States and a symbol of our confidence in the progress we can make when we’re working together.

Q. what is your favorite aspect of working for lockheed martin?

a. Lockheed Martin is a company whose mission is to solve complex challenges, advance scientific discovery and deliver innovative solutions to help our partners keep their citizens safe and provide them with essential services. If you think about the challenges facing our world today, from climate change to resource scarcity, I’m proud to be working for a global technology leader with an unwavering sense of purpose to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and deliver products and capabilities our partners need at a price they can afford. But what makes my job so particularly rewarding is being here in UAE with partners I have worked so closely with for over 20 years achieving our mutual National Security objectives.

Q. as an organization that is well established here, what advice would you give to other orga-nization that wants to enjoy similar longevity in the uaE?

a. At a time when budgets are flat or declining in many industrial sectors, working collaboratively and fostering positive customer relationships are more important than ever before. Knowing your customer or partner well is a

8 TawaSOl - VOl 1 2015

mEmBEr fOCuS

Page 9: Tawasol vol 1 2015

pre-requisite. Take time to understand local culture and how to work with the government, industry and academia to help achieve their strategic goals.

Q. what is the most important lesson you have had to learn as a leader?

a. Trust in people, so that they can believe in you!

Q. what do you do to relax after work?

a. Working out, golf, parachuting and any competition, including chess and backgammon.

Q. how did you get your start with lockheed?

a. Sheer blind luck.

Q. lockheed was recently nominated for the amCham Bridge of Excellence award – in your opinion, what three things does any company need to succeed?

a. To succeed in the UAE, as in many other global markets, a company should not only be sensitive to specific business and cultural needs, but also demonstrate a willingness to listen and be prepared to help advance local industry or academia through joint ventures, university partnerships and community projects.

Q. what developments would you like to see to further uS-uaE relations?

a. The United Arab Emirates and United States already have a deep relationship underpinned by strong bilat-eral trade and investment, and shared economic interests. AmCham plays an important role in sustaining this position. Building on this already strong foundation, we could perhaps help the UAE strengthen western aware-ness that is one of the most open and innovative economies in the world with a government that is committed to the promotion of regional political stability, peace and economic growth.

Over 150 leading business executives, entrepreneurs, academics and government officials gathered at the Yas Viceroy for AmCham Abu Dhabi’s 6th Annual Roundtable Summit, October 26, 2014. The event, hosted by Am-Cham Abu Dhabi Vice Chairman Roy Panzarella, featured a keynote address by the UAE Minister of Economy HE Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori.

In his speech, the Minister of Economy reiterated the important role that business communities in the two coun-tries play in promoting prevailing friendly ties.

His Excellency Saeed Al Mansoori said: “The UAE-US bilateral relationship has evolved over the years to include partnerships in key areas of mutual interest, such as trade, commerce, education, financial services, aviation, and many others. US-UAE trade reached $26 billion in 2013 and UAE is the top destination for American exports in the entire MENA region.”

The Minister said: “The UAE’s advanced economic infrastructure and business-friendly environment make our country an ideal economic partner for US-based businesses looking to accelerate investments and forge symbi-otic ties in the region.”

“The UAE today boasts one of the most dynamic and diversified economies in the world. We have successfully reduced the country’s dependence on oil with the sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP standing at just 31 percent. A strategy to bring this down to 20 percent has already been set in motion with the country aspiring to become a knowledge-based sustainable economy. The UAE is keen to ensure a 5 percent contribution from the innovation and knowledge sector to the GDP by 2021.”

“AmCham Abu Dhabi is honored to host Minister Al Mansoori at our most important business event of the year,” said Roy Panzarella, Vice Chairman of AmCham Abu Dhabi. “We expect that the results of this Summit will en-hance the strong commercial relations between the US and UAE”

The nine roundtable sessions, led by top industry executives, met to discuss the challenges to trade and invest-ment in Abu Dhabi, propose potential solutions, and identify the key stakeholders necessary to implement them.

The following sectors were covered at the Summit: 1) Banking and Finance; 2) Communication, Arts & Culture; 3) Defense, Aerospace & Security; 4) Education and Professional Training; 5) Energy, Water, Oil & Gas; 6) En-gineering, Construction & Project Management; 7) Healthcare & Insurance; 8) Hospitality and Tourism; and 9) Information Technology.

The issues and recommendations identified in each of the nine industry sectors will be compiled into a Roundta-ble Report that will be presented to US and UAE policymakers and government officials. The feedback seeks to make US business more competitive in Abu Dhabi and increase trade and investment between the US and UAE.

AmCham Abu Dhabi, which has been conducting Roundtable sessions since 2003, is a pioneer in the field pro-moting dialogues that impact US business and trade in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Business Groups Forum, established in 2001, is an annual event that aims to strengthen the ties between Abu Dhabi’s diverse business groups, that collectively represent thousands of companies operating within the UAE, and facilitate opportunities for collaboration and networking between them. It celebrates the contribution of the business groups in promoting trade and commerce in Abu Dhabi by holding a trade show in the afternoon followed by a gala dinner in the evening. Dignitaries in attendance included His Excellency Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade and Industry at the Ministry of Economy, His Excellency Ibrahim Al-Mahmood, First Deputy Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber and Ambassadors from many countries.

The 2014 Forum’s theme “Innovation for Business Growth” highlighted the important components of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 in building a sustainable, knowledge based economy. Key sectors highlighted at the Forum included: Financial Services, Healthcare, Education, Media, Telecommunications, Tourism, Transportation and Trade.

AmCham Abu Dhabi Vice Chairman, Roy Panzarella, remarked in his opening speech, “With the UAE government’s announcement that 2015 will be the Year of Innovation, we are proud to co host this event which highlights the contributions of international business groups.”

The forum took place after the traditional Business Groups Trade Show, which gave the 26 business groups that participated the opportunity to exhibit the various advantages and opportunities available in their home countries. A colorful mix of cultural icons, national dress, handicrafts, and business opportunities, the trade show was widely announced to be the best to date by those who attended. As well as providing the various business groups of Abu Dhabi the platform to recruit new members, the forum, which was free and open to the public, was also an excellent opportunity for the members of different business groups to interact and network. AmCham Abu Dhabi held a high level kick-off breakfast on February 22, 2015 at the Anantara Eastern Man-groves Hotel & Spa, just before the opening of the International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) 2015. Over 300 AmCham Abu Dhabi members and guests attended, including senior US and UAE military officers, government officials, and leading defense executives. The highlight of the industry focused event was a riveting keynote address by US Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, Frank Kendall, on the importance of military and industry cooperation.

The AmCham Abu Dhabi IDEX Kick-off Breakfast is held on the first day of IDEX to facilitate networking and collaboration between locally based companies in the sector and visiting US aerospace and defense industry executives. Attending this high-profile event has become a tradition among US military leaders, diplomats and local and visiting industry CEO’s. Some of the distinguished attendees included Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, Puneet Talwar; Defense Security Cooperation Agency Director, Vice Admiral Joseph W. Rixey; Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, Vice Admiral John Miller; Defense Technology Security Administration Director, Beth M. McCormick, and US Ambassador to the UAE, The Honorable Barbara A. Leaf.

The kick-off event was opened by AmCham Abu Dhabi Chairman Matthew E. Byrd, who warmly greeted the sold-out crowd. “IDEX is a key platform for showcasing the US defense industry, and it presents an immense oppor-tunity for future collaboration between our two nations,” said Byrd, underlining the significance of the US-UAE. trade relationship, and the vital role that the defense industry plays.

Ambassador Barbara A. Leaf, during her welcoming address, hailed US-UAE partnerships in trade and commerce, particularly in the aviation and defense sectors, and the overall trade levels of some $24.9 billion. She said the IDEX event was an outstanding opportunity to bring together US and UAE partners to further advance commer-cial bilateral ties.

During his keynote address, Under Secretary Kendall addressed various Department of Defense initiatives such as defense exportability features and the value of collaborating on expanding our search and outreach in global markets.

“There are people working hard to deal with the problems of today; it’s my job to worry about the challenges of tomorrow... and five years from now and ten years after that” said Under Secretary Kendall. “Industry is a critical part of our force structure and together, our partnership is essential to ensuring our warfighters are equipped with the best technology in the world.”

Frank Kendall currently serves as the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (AT&L). In this capacity, he is responsible to the Secretary of Defense for all matters pertaining to acquisition; research and engineering; developmental testing; contract administration; logistics and materiel readiness; in-stallations and environment; operational energy; chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons; the acquisition work-force; and the defense industrial base. He is the leader of the Department of Defense’s efforts to increase the Department’s buying power and improve the performance of the defense acquisition enterprise.

IDEX is a biennial event that takes place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC), and is the only international defense exhibition and conference in the MENA region demonstrating the latest technology across land, sea and air sectors of defense.
