Tawana Williams-One Sheet

The words “I can‘t” are not an option for Tawana Williams! When you meet Tawana, she will not tell you about how she survived the trauma of gang rape. She will not tell you about her experience with abortion and the miraculous birth of her daughter. She will not tell you about how God delivered her from a ten year struggle with crack and cocaine addiction. Tawana will simply tell you “if you decide to do something in your life, you can do it.” She knows this lesson because she lives it everyday of her life. When you meet her, you’ll see why her life was full of challenges. She was born without arms and impaired use of her legs. This is why she likes to tell others that because of her relationship with God, she considers herself “UNarmed But Dangerous!”

Born in Wilson, North Carolina in 1963 without arms, due to the drug Thalidomide that was given to her mother, then she wrote a letter to President John F. She can do just about anything that someone with arms can do, even braid hair, type and write a check. She grew up in the Washington, DC area where she attended school and in 1981 as a senior, she became addicted to crack cocaine because of peer pressure. Her addiction lasted 10 years. In 1991, after becoming tired of her lifestyle, she cried out to a God that she didn’t know and asked for deliverance from her addictions. He answered instantly! In her book “UNarmed But Dangerous” Tawana tells her poignant and heroic story of surviving the trauma of gang rape, being raped by her stepfather, abortion, past physically and mentally abusive relationships, the miraculous birth of her daughter and how she finally married her childhood sweetheart ‘Toby.’ “UNarmed But Dangerous” the book will be featured as her Debut Movie “Eagle Without Wings” in Theaters coming soon. Tawana became a professional speaker in 1996. She speaks to people encouraging them to look beyond their circumstances and to accept God’s gift of freedom without limitations. As an individual who have traveled to more than 20 nations of the world, invited to the White House twice, and spoken to audiences of 25,000 at a time, I am not easily impressed. But, when I first met Tawana in Atlanta I was immediately aware of the fact that there was something different about her besides not having arms. Her independence and jovial attitude quickly distracted me from what some would call a handicap. As she spoke that day, she had us laughing at one moment and cringe the next, yet none of it had to do with sadness. She seemed to be 10 feet tall that day as she inspired us all. Somehow her not having arms did not bother her at all, and it made us not be bothered either. She talked like she could accomplish anything. It was like her disbelief had been suspended. A few months later I invited her to be a keynote speaker at a seminar I hosted. When she finished speaking and demonstrating what she could do with her feet she literally was overwhelming to those in attendance. I believe everybody walked out of the room that night destroying every excuse they came in with. Later, spending personal time with her and Toby further showed me what an incredible women I was in the presence of. I would not only like to give this book the highest recommendation, but also recommend that you have her come to your community to experience her live. And I do mean live! Foreword “UNarmed But Dangerous”-Les Brown

Have you ever heard someone’s voice and they spoke to the very core of your being? I have! Have you ever met someone and instantly you knew you were in the presence of greatness? I have! Have you ever met someone who had so much going against them that you wondered how they were able to survive and then felt ashamed of yourself for living a defeated life? I have! That’s how I felt when I met Tawana. Born without arms and with a tiny stature of just over 4 ft., she overcame child molestation, poverty, rape, mental and physical abuse, addiction to crack and cocaine amongst other painful tragedies. Using her feet, she learned how to write and draw beautiful works of art, answer the phone, cook and live a normal life. She operates a business, mesmerizes audiences as a motivational speaker and can sing the roof off of a church. In addition to all those things I will venture to say that her greatest joy is being a devoted loving wife to her soul mate and God given companion Toby. To see them together and the love they express for each other is the greatest example I have ever seen of what love truly is. Toby, a gifted speaker and a servant husband taught me and the men in one of my recent Speaker Training Summits, how to serve and treat a woman with class. We were humbled and felt blessed to learn from his example and in particular to be in their presence to witness their devotion to each other. There is no question in my mind that Tawana will impact peoples’ lives around the world through her classic book, UNarmed But Dangerous. This warm, inspiring and incredible human spirit does so much with so little, that she challenges all of us to look within and realize how much more life has to offer if only we were willing to commit ourselves to do what is required to live a more significant life. Tawana’s life example will inspire you to soar to new heights and to accomplish things that will literally amaze you. Although Tawana does not carry a gun or a knife, she is truly unarmed and dangerous because she uses the weapons of her faith in God and her unfailing commitment to serve His calling on her life, as we all should do. After reading this book your life will never be the same again. “Tawana, the world is a better place because you showed up”! FACT SHEET: The History of Thalidomide

Thalidomide became infamous in the early 1960s as one of the biggest drug

disasters in recent history. Around 15,000 fetuses were damaged by Thalidomide, of whom about 12,000 in

46 countries were born with birth defects, with only 8,000 of them surviving past the first year of life. Most of these survivors are still alive, nearly all with disabilities caused by the drug.

Thalidomide was soon banned worldwide when it was discovered that it caused

tragic birth defects. Thalidomide was actually never approved by the Food and Drug Administration

(FDA) during the early 1960s, and therefore, prevented thousands of deformities from occurring in the United States. Frances Oldham Kelsey, the reviewer at the FDA who delayed the approval, was awarded the President’s Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service (at the time, the highest civilian award in the U.S.) by President John F. Kennedy.

Taking even a single dose of thalidomide during early pregnancy may cause

major birth defects. In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Thalidomide for use

in treating leprosy symptoms. Studies are also being conducted to determine the effectiveness of Thalidomide in treating symptoms associated with AIDS, Behchet Disease, Lupus, Sjogren Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Macular Degeneration and some cancers.

Introduction of “UNarmed But Dangerous”

An eagle in flight is magnificent. Its wings allow it to soar above the earth

with majestic power. The scene makes you stop whatever you are doing

and watch. Watching the eagle fly reminds me of God’s power. The eagle

is so powerful that it can even soar above an approaching storm. It catches

the wind by the tail and then rides the air currents, much like a surfer who catches a good

wave. It does not fear. It does not panic. It only watches and waits until just the right

moment and then aligns itself with the coming force of nature. Then it rides, glides and

soars.

Just imagine that same eagle without wings. Without its wings, the eagle would be

powerless. It would not be able to surf the storm, soar above the earth and we would miss

the sight of him in flight. Without wings, the eagle would also starve; its ability to fly

high above the earth and search out his prey would be lost. The eagle would not be able

to swoop down and catch in its claws, the prey it needs for survival. Without its wings,

this magnificent bird of prey would die. Like that eagle, we have all been created to soar.

Most of us came into the world with arms, legs, a functioning mind and a healthy body.

Like that eagle, we each have the chance to soar above our life’s storms and catch the tail

of our dreams and feel the wind of our vision. With arms outspread, we each wait for our

chance to catch a wave and soar. My story is a bit different. As you read it, my prayer is

that you will see that eagles can learn to fly, even without wings. I pray that my story will

encourage you to live without excuses and even if your wings get broken, make the

attempt to fly. I believe that if you will try, then you will live. If you don’t try, then like

Page 13: Tawana Williams Press/Media-Kit...The 700 Club, “Your World” with Creflo Dollar & many other TV programs. She speaks for groups in the corporate arena as well as in churches, prisons

the eagle without wings, your dreams will surely die. My prayer is that my story will

cause you to see that God has given you many gifts and you can do so many things to

bring Him glory. I encourage you to look beyond your boundaries, live your life to its

fullest potential and soar about your life’s storms with power.

Back Cover Summary: “God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea and the things which are Not, to bring to nought the things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence…He that glories, let him glory in the Lord.”-1 Corinthians 1:27-31 Where do you turn when pain destroys every dream you’ve ever had? When every door of hope has been shut to you? Heartache and affliction in some way touch each of our lives. Amidst the attack of

trials and injustice, our survival is determined by our choice to surrender or to stand on the faith of God’s redemptive power. For every fighter who ever stood alone, one woman’s life tells the true story of victory dawning after the darkest night. From the shadows of obscurity and the anguish of disability, Tawana Williams was a victim of brutal medical negligence. Born without arms and impaired use of her legs, her compelling life story unfolds her will to survive the anguish of physical defect and the shame of abuse and isolation. Unable to fight with human hands, she fought in spirit and yet lives to stand through the grace and courage of God, UNarmed But Dangerous. Eating, cleaning, driving, even the simplest of tasks seemed monumental, yet her resolute determination transcended self-pity. She endured years of physical pain, emotional scars and the rejection of family members and peers. She withstood childhood only by the strength of a mother’s love. Through the onslaught of adolescent peer pressure, Tawana became ensnared and locked for a decade in the bondage of drug use and abusive relationships. UNarmed But Dangerous unfolds Tawana’s walk through the midst of the most severe trials imaginable, as the gentle hand of God wipes away every tear and gives peace to every unanswered question. Her story is sure to give healing to the most broken heart, flight to the broken wing and life to the lifeless dreams. Without excuses, without complaint, this honest gripping portrayal of the intimate struggles of Tawana’s journey give evidence of the Armor of God to sustain us and His power to restore our broken past, piece by piece. As a wife, mother, entrepreneur, artist, nationally acclaimed motivational speaker and author, her story is the Power of God’s spirit to birth destiny from despair. If you’ve ever asked the question ‘why me?’ If you’ve ever known devastating loss, be equipped and transformed as you embark on this remarkable voyage of one extraordinary servant from the paralysis of victimization to warrior triumphant.

Greetings Friend, What would you do if you were born without your arms? Would you feel sorry for yourself and drown in your sorrows? Would you have thoughts of suicide? Many of us would have chosen those paths if we had been born without our arms but not Tawana Williams. In her Classic Book “UNarmed But Dangerous,” Tawana tells her poignant and heroic story of being born without arms, she conquered the trauma of gang rape, being raped by her step father, abortion, the miraculous birth of her daughter, ten years of drug addiction and then marrying her childhood sweetheart ‘Toby.’ These challenges have built her muscles and have strengthened her heart. Born during the early 1960s when pregnant women were prescribed Thalidomide for morning sickness, Tawana was born without both of her arms. Her mother was desperate to seek help for her daughter but was turned away by government institutions until she wrote a letter to the President of the United States John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy wrote back with instructions on where to go for help. Tawana was admitted into the Cerebral Palsy Hospital at Duke in Durham, North Carolina. She then began learning how to use her feet to perform everyday activities. When she left the institution at the age of four, she used her sense of humor to overcome the taunts she received from the other children. Tawana had a great need to be accepted and this soon proved to be one of her greatest liabilities. Although she was an outstanding student, she would soon allow her grades to slip so that the other students would accept her. Once the barriers of the good grades were gone, she connected with the drug culture. She smoked marijuana and before she realized what was happening, she became addicted to crack cocaine. This began her downward spiral which lasted 10 years. In 1991, after becoming tired of her lifestyle, Tawana cried out for God to deliver her from her addictions. Her prayers were answered, instantly. Today she speaks to audiences all around the country encouraging them to look beyond their circumstances and to accept God’s gift of freedom without limitations. Currently, Tawana Williams is accepting Keynote Speaking engagements and/or interview opportunities. For more information about her books or to schedule an appearance, please feel free to contact us. In the meanwhile, have a Blessed day! Sincerely,
