Thoughts from Caroline-Artemis…

Dear Friends & Readers,

February has arrived and that means one thing… Just 11 months to go before the end of the year. Until then, man things will happen; lots of travel, places to explore, new opportunities and much planning ahead of time in some cases, but we need to enjoy the present too and take what comes along day by day, prior to the arrival of Christmas 2015!

You may well laugh, but already companies are promoting their venues and inviting bookings for Christmas parties, at ‘2014’ prices, by booking and paying now!

For those in the M.I.C.E sector, organising large scale events and congresses takes a great deal of time and requires a long lead in, but for venues to begin campaigning for what are essentially small Christmas gatherings, just 3 weeks after the previous years festivities seems to be taking things a little too far.

Our materialistic world also sees TV adverts broadcasting in January, claiming that ‘it is never too early to start organising for Christmas!’ These companies are purely interested in making money and not interested in the real meaning of Christmas, or indeed any other major religious event.

In our world of instant communication, everything happens in the here and now, there are no delays, but if we turned off the switch for just a few hours, life would quickly revert back to a more ‘human’ pace where we can think and take our time; and that is not a bad thing.

By planning ahead and being organised can lead to success in business, but in this instance, it certainly makes most of us reply with a click on the ‘unsubscribe’ button, or even a desire to not consider working with those venues/companies. If we were invited to find out about booking the venue for a November/December date, then reactions would have been different. Companies must be careful not to lose vital contacts through over-eager marketing campaigns.

After all, we are celebrating one of the most important religious holidays in the world, we are all still human, not machines (yet) but the time is coming when we deal with robots who just complete the task they are programmed to do.

Hope you enjoy the rest of this month’s edition of the e-journal.

Tea for Two, in London by Caroline-Artemis Laspas

When out and about in your home town or touring a new city, we all need to take a break and enjoy the surroundings and watch the world go by, and most of us do so in a coffee house or tea shop.

One can almost always find an international café chain to visit, but what is really special is to find a unique place to enjoy your refreshment.

Inspiring this article is a recent trip into London, UK. In the heart of London’s west end, on Piccadilly is the Royal Academy of Arts. It is in itself a spectacular building set within a large majestic courtyard. Founded in 1768, it is the oldest fine arts institution in Britain. It is universally renowned for hosting some of the capital's finest temporary and touring exhibitions.

The Gamble and Poynter Rooms at Victoria & Albert Museum, (courtesy of Visit London)

Hidden at the back of the building is the ‘Grand Café’ and ‘grand’ is the word here. The room is amazing, with huge wall murals paintings, glass cabinets housing sculptures mixed beautifully with very modern lighting in a calm and sophisticated atmosphere. You would never know it is there unless a frequent visitor to the Academy. With a range of drinks, snacks and meals on offer, it makes a quiet corner of busy London to just take a breath but in a wonderful environment. www.royalacademy.org.uk/eating-and-drinking

For a truly grand tea stop, visit ‘The Wolseley’, also on Piccadilly, located next door to the Ritz Hotel.

Originally designed as a prestigious car sales room in 1921, which went bankrupt due to lack of sales, the building was taken over by bank in 1927 with some additions to the setting of manager offices

on either side of the main entrance (now serving as a bar and salon) and a banking counter along with other specialised furniture like a post box and stamp machine, which are still on display today. In 2003 careful restoration and renovation started and the Wolseley as a café-restaurant in the grand European tradition was born. With its spectacular listed interior, the restaurant buzzes and serves breakfast, morning coffee, afternoon tea and an all-day menu and dinner. The elegance of your surroundings makes any coffee or tea, a wonderful experience especially when served in a silver tea pot, with waiters in long tailed coats. It is a ‘must do’ on a visit to London. www.thewolseley.com

If you would like to take ‘tea on the move’, while enjoying the sites of London, then the perfect place is the ‘BB Afternoon Tea Bus Tour. This vintage London bus will drive around Central London, taking in some of the City’s best sights, whilst you can indulge in the fabulous BB Afternoon Tea. Operated by BB Bakery based in Covent Garden, a traditional French Salon de Thé, brings the authentic taste of real French baking to London. The bakery itself offers a wonderful French atmosphere for tea or lunch. The BB Afternoon Tea Bus Tour takes approx. 1hr 30mins and includes ‘high tea’ in the elegantly converted iconic red bus, with a beautifully displayed variety of tasty sandwiches and delicious cakes and pastries. So popular is this concept, that there will soon be a BB Afternoon Tea Taxi, which will offer a more intimate tea! www.bbbakery.co.uk

The V&A (The Victoria & Albert Museum) is the world's greatest museum of art and design, and it contains thousands of reasons to visit it, least of all for its café! Located in South Kensington (West London). The Café is located in the V&A's original refreshment rooms, the Morris, Gamble and Poynter Rooms. These 3 rooms formed the 1st museum restaurant in the world and were intended as a showpiece of modern design, craftsmanship and manufacturing. With wood panelling walls inset with grand blue tiled scenes, coffee never tasted so good! If you time your visit well you can also enjoy live piano playing in the central grand room. The café caters for snacks, refreshments, and lunches. www.vam.ac.uk/visiting/visitor-information/#eating-drinking

For coffee with a view – visit the Tate Modern located on the Southbank of the River Thames. The Tate Café, on level 1 overlooks the riverside and has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Everything on the menu is seasonal and fresh and there are home-made

smoothies, special leaf teas and coffee. Located on level 3 is an Espresso Bar with 2 riverside balconies, offering wonderful views over the Thames and across to St. Paul’s Cathedral on the other side of the river. www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern/eat-drink-and-shop

The Cafe at St Paul's Cathedral offers another unique setting for your refreshment break. An oasis of calm away from the bustle of the City, the café lies in the ancient crypt of the Cathedral where some of the UK’s greatest heroes, poets and scientists have their last resting place. With homemade cakes and biscuits, quick snacks or a leisurely light lunch, the café is ideal. www.restaurantatstpauls.co.uk

For tea with a history then there is only one place to go; Twinings on the Strand, in the heart of the city. Tea came to England in 1662 by Catherine of Braganza the Portuguese wife of Charles II and soon tea became the refreshment to drink. Merchant, Thomas Twining was enthralled at the possibilities this popular beverage could offer, so he learnt all there was to know about it and by 1706 was ready to start up his own business. He bought number 216 The Strand and the rest is history!

In 1837, Queen Victoria granted Twinings its 1st Royal Warrant for tea – she appointed Twinings as supplier of teas to her household. Since then, Twinings has had the honour of supplying every successive British Monarch. Since 1706 and now over 300 years later, the Twinings passion for tea is still alive and tea is still sold from Thomas's shop. Here you can buy teas and experience the ‘Loose Tea Tasting Bar’ and a ‘Pick and Mix’ counter where you can create your own tea bag collection. There is also a small but delightful museum with some fascinating artefacts like old teapots and caddies and old family photos! www.twinings.co.uk

Many of the venues featured in this article cater for meetings and events of varying sizes, making London even more of a unique and interesting destination for not only ‘tea’ tourism, but for business too.

Without a doubt, London has put the elegance back into taking tea and there is nothing more uniquely British than afternoon tea with London offering many wonderfully unique coffee shops and tea houses with a warm welcome, spectacular environments and some great tasting tea and cake! Anyone for another cup? ●

2015 YEAR OF THE SILKROAD 2015

is the promotional year to build awareness and attract tourists to destinations along the ancient Silk Road that linked China across Asia and on into Europe. A special ceremony was held recently in Xi’an, in Northwest China’s Shaanxi province, which was the original starting point of the ancient Silk Road. The route connected many civilisations over 2,000 years ago, with amazing trade routes which saw a wonderful exchange of goods, ideas and cultures along its 4,000 mile length. Today the Silk Road is a lucrative tourism market across many countries. China National Tourism Administration is promoting travel to countries along this route, to develop new products and jointly promote them. The new Silk Roads, both land and sea, involve 65 countries. With future cooperation more direct flights will open and barriers to travel will fall. The end of the Silk Road in Europe is Rome, Italy and Prague, Czech Republic. The name the ‘Silk Road’ comes from the successful trading of Chinese silk, during the Han Dynasty (between 206BC and 220AD). Crossing through 17 countries, from Turkey, Syria and Iran, to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and India, as well as Bangladesh and China, there is a wide variety of scenery and cultures for modern day tourists to enjoy along the route. The UNWTO Silk Road Programme has been working to develop the benefits that tourism development can bring to local Silk Road communities and it is now working with 30 member states. Tourism along the Great Silk Road will be a top promotion priority over the next 3 years and as such, it is vital to be part of the China Xi’an Silk Road International Tourism Expo 2015, taking place in Xi’an Qujiang International Conference & Exhibition Centre from 11-13 September.

With a hosted buyer programme, one-2-one meetings, networking events and education seminars it is the first international tourism event with a unique theme in China. Xi’an is home to one of China’s top tourist attractions, the Terracotta Warriors. Tourism around the world is a proud international Media Partner for the show and hopes to see you there.

NEW MONORAIL AT DAEGU Korea’s 1st urban monorail will start operation in Daegu

soon. The state of the art light rail system will function as the city’s 3rd subway line. The new line will be the world’s longest beam, with new safety features and eco-friendly qualities. Weaving through the city, the new line sits 10m above the street, offering a new view of the city along the way. The monorail has also created a stir among industry experts and also tourists, with many coming to Daegu just to experience it. The new line is safe, offers privacy to those who have the monorail pass by their first floor window, as the monorail windows become opaque automatically when passing through residential areas. It is environmentally friendly with bicycle racks at stations to encourage getting to the monorail by bike and not car. And finally it does not detract from the beauty of the city, with stunning bridges spanning the Palgeocheon, Geumho, Shincheon and Beomeocheon. There are great views on offer and 5 types of sky gardens are planned for rooftops near the line. Indeed, so successful is the monorail that it is expected to become a top landmark of the city. Daegu City will be organising special tourism packages that take advantage of the new access and views granted by the new line. Even festivals will gravitate towards newly built stations to draw more visitors.

LEISURE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN KUNMING HI-TECH ZONE Plans are

underway for the construction of a leisure centre to be built in the Kunming Hi-Tech Zone, following meetings with Yunnan Sheenjoy Tourism Group. As part of a long term project the 1st phase would see construction of a hotel in the New District Industrial Base within the Zone. Yunnan Sheenjoy Tourism Group is a leading enterprise in Yunnan province that focuses on investment and management of high-end resorts.

NEW POLICY MEANS MORE PUBLIC SPACE ON THAILAND’S BEACHES As part of

Thailand’s nationwide beach clean-up campaign, the beaches of Pattaya and Jomtien are being regulated with a new zoning policy that will reduce the space for beach chairs and umbrellas and offer larger space for holidaymakers, and thereby improving the whole beach experience, by either opting for lying on the beach or using the chairs and umbrellas. In addition, Wednesday’s are a ‘day-off’ for beach vendors usually operating a business on either Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches in order to allow more public space for both the local people and holidaymakers. The new rules have also been applied to other beaches in Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin) and Chon Buri (Bang Saen) to ensure that international travellers and local tourists enjoy hassle-free fun when visiting the kingdom’s beautiful resort destinations.

SINGAPORE COOPERATION WITH CHENGDU A Singaporean delegation, visited

Chengdu recently to seek opportunities to develop Sino-Singaporean cooperation. Cooperation between Singapore and China, especially the mid-western part (Chengdu) offers great potential due to its location, positive investment, leading economics and rich cooperation experience with Singapore in finance, logistics trade and tourism. Projects to date have been most successful and 4 Singaporean companies gave brief overviews on developments of their projects in Chengdu and gave advice on how to deepen cooperation. ●

SNAPSHOT OF GREEK TOURISM HIGHLIGHTS

With the eyes of the world on Greece as it is set to radically change its politics, the country has, over the past couple of years, despite hard austerity measures, kept fighting and building on its classical offerings and as a result has seen record tourism figures. GREECE TARGETS INDIAN TOURISM A meeting was

The main issues discussed concerned the strengthening of the cultural cooperation between Greece and India. Greece is keen to attract international film productions in Greece and suggested conducting a bilateral agreement for the cooperation of the 2 countries in the film sector as a precursor of the extension of their cultural relationships. With both countries being the cradles of 2 of the most ancient civilisations, has helped in the development of a relationship of mutual respect that can become the stepping stone for a constructive cooperation in the field of Modern Culture. Greece is to be launched. The new system will enable travellers to use their smart phones to book, purchase and print their own boarding pass online. DAEGU CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU AIM GREEN

The Daegu Convention and Visitors Bureau (DCVB) along with local M.I.C.E suppliers continue making progress in developing sustainable and environmentally friendly efforts. The city of Daegu itself further amplifies these efforts. The ‘Be a Green Man’ and ‘Green Zone’ campaigns allowed the DCVB and M.I.C.E suppliers to lower the effect large-scale events had on the local environment. ‘Be a Green Man’ initiative directly involved participants in an environmental responsibility mission. The ‘Green Zone’ was located in the lobby of major events, aimed at showing delegates, exhibitors and visitors how they can be more environmentally responsible. The reduction of paper materials and implementation of reusable products has made the biggest difference. Paper waste has been reduced with greater digitisation of materials. The EXCO (Exhibition and Convention) centre houses nearly all major M.I.C.E events and has been equipped with the largest solar power system in Korea for an independent building, making it the world’s best ‘Green Convention Center’. Recently, the DCVB and Daegu M.I.C.E Alliance held a M.I.C.E Day that brought many of these efforts to light.

GLORIA CAMPANER: LA MIA MUSICA PER IL MYANMAR*

She is already a household name in many countries around the world. She is just back from touring seven cities in Brazil – a country she adores, where she spends a lot of her time for musical and humanitarian reasons, and which always welcomes her back with open arms – and in February she will make her debut in Mexico City. She is the first Italian pianist to be awarded the prestigious "Premio Borletti-Buitoni Fellowship 2014" prize. And in Italy 28-year-old Gloria Campaner, who hails from the Veneto region, has performed in prestigious concert halls (in the Quirinal Palace for the Italian president Napolitano for Woman’s Day 2011) and with such prestigious orchestras as the RAI National Symphony Orchestra. Brilliant and eclectic, open to experimentation and to incursions into other musical genres from jazz to

contemporary music, in January Gloria had two important concerts with the Sardinian violinist Anna Tifu, also aged 28, with whom she began collaborating last year after a concert together in Paris. On 14th January they performed in the Sala Verdi Hall in Milan and on 23rd in Rome for the Chamber Music Season in the National Academy of Santa Cecilia with a programme of music that went from Schumann to Ravel. These two young musicians are now working on a recording.

Gloria & Héloïse Geoghegan in a Yangon school

Gloria Campaner was one of the first musicians to perform at a classical music concert in Myanmar since the end of the military dictatorship which terminated in 2011. In November 2013 the pianist was invited, together with the Irish violinist Héloïse Geoghegan, to play for the charity concert ‘Music for Myanmar’ in the former capital Yangon. The event was organised by Link for Aid (www.linkforaid.org), a humanitarian organisation which provides aid to underprivileged children in two of the poorest countries in Asia, Myanmar and Cambodia. “The military dictatorship kept Myanmar isolated from the outside world,” says Gloria, “and people only knew their own musical traditions. Nothing that came from the outside world was allowed to enter. The country had no culture of classical music. But since Myanmar opened politically many young people have become interested in western music. They have absolutely no technical or cultural formation, but their curiosity has led to an explosion of creativity and talent.”

Gloria’s social commitment is the other side of the coin of her chosen profession. “I spend a lot of time in Brazil, and each time I go back I use my music, dedicating it to poor and underprivileged children for a series of projects. I like playing in less conventional situations, to bring music also to people who otherwise would not be able to enjoy it; like the Brazilian favelas, oncological hospitals and prisons. No matter what kind of music it is, or which traditions it springs from, music has an immense beneficial power.” Source: famigl iacristiana.i t ●

AIRBUS VIP WIDEBODY Airbus

Corporate Jets is using its A330/340 platform to launch the Airbus ACJ330 Summit, a plane that enables customers to fly ‘nonstop to the world’, meaning the VIP jet can fly from Riyadh to Los Angeles. A key feature will be to configure the cabin so the front half is in a VIP arrangement while the rear section can be outfitted with standard commercial airline business and economy seating. With many heads of state and super rich often travelling in large groups the Summit enables this to be efficiently achieved.

MYANMAR NATIONAL AIRLINES

In a bid to further attract foreign investors; Myanmar's state-owned national carrier has changed its name as part of an upgrade and will now be known as Myanmar National Airlines (MNA). The airline was established in 1948 and currently operates domestic

services mainly. The rebranding is part of an investment plan as the airline wishes to expand internationally, as its only international destination is Gaya, India. It has been upgrading its fleet over the past year and this new move is hoped to make it stand out among the growing number of private sector carriers operating in the country. With some airlines reducing and removing their 1st class sections on long haul fleets Swiss is committed to building on this sector and improving some technological enhancements on the new planes.

AIRLINES CUSTOMER MILES STOLEN American and United airlines have had

customer usernames and passwords stolen and have used the data to buy flights or make upgrades. The theft happened in late December. Travel websites are fighting this kind of fraud by increasing security steps at the login process. United Airlines would restore miles to anyone who had them stolen. American Airlines said that about 10,000 accounts were affected and some have been frozen while the airline and customer set up new accounts. Both airlines confirmed that nobody hacked their systems. Delta Air Lines detected similar attempts to crack into customers' accounts late last year but with no success.
