1. INTRODUCTION TO CNG :

CNG (COMPRESSED NATURALGAS) is principally constituted byMethane. CNG is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic but inflammableand lighter than air. CNG hasfollowing benefits.

• Due to low density it iscompressed at a pressure ofaround 200 bars to improve thevehicle on board capacity.

• Vehicle life-span can be prolongedsince there is no carbongenerated during combustion andhence, engine and the oil in theengine are much cleaner.

• Due to its low hydro-carbonemissions, CNG is widelyconsidered to be anenvironmentally viable alternativeto petrol.

CAUTION• In case of any symptom of CNG

leakage or releasing noise or anyexternal damage to CNG pipe/components or during accident,DO NOT PANIC.

• Stop the vehicle, switch off theengine and open all doors forventilation.

• Close the CNG cylinder manualshut off knob (located below thedriver’s seat).

On board Diagnostics or OBD is anautomotive term referring to avehicle’s self Diagnostic andreporting capability. The OBD systemallows continuous diagnosis of thecomponents of the vehicle correlatedwith emissions. This system warnsthe driver, by turning “ON” theMalfunction Indication lamp (MIL) onthe instrument cluster, when a faultcauses emission levels to increase.

The OBD system also has adiagnostic connector that can beinterfaced with appropriatediagnostic tools, which makes itpossible to read the fault codesstored in the Electronic Control Unit, together with a series of specificparameters for Engine operation andDiagnosis. This check can also becarried out by the traffic police.

To access the diagnostic connector(Fig. 1), which is located below thedashboard (Fig. 2) at the RH side ofthe steering wheel as shown in thebelow images.

NOTE : In case the fault occurs andMIL on the instrument cluster comesON, contact nearest TATA MOTORSauthorized service center. Aftereliminating the inconvenience, tocheck the system completely, TATAMOTORS authorized service centersare obliged to run a bench test and ifnecessary, road tests which may alsocall for a long journey. Thefunctioning of MIL lamp may also bechecked by the traffic police usingspecific devices.

FRIENDLY TIPS TO IMPROVE FUELECONOMY :Your vehicle's fuel economy is mainlydependent on your style of driving. To operate your vehicle aseconomically as possible, adhereto following driving suggestions.Avoid Excessive Idling :Shut Off the engine if you have towait for more than a minute whileyou are in traffic.Avoid fast starts and unnecessarystops :Start off slowly from traffic lights orstop signs to prevent increased fuelconsumption and shortening ofengine life. Avoid unnecessarydeceleration (stopping or slowingdown) and then acceleration whichuses more fuel.Always maintain clean air-filter:The amount of air supplied willreduce due to clogged air-filter,resulting in loss of power and fueleconomy.Maintain correct tyre pressures:Under-inflated tyres result inincreased running resistance of thetyres, leading to wastage of fuel.(Refer tyre maintenance section)Proper Driving Practices :Keep a safe distance from othervehicles to avoid braking suddenly.

NOTICEDo not rest your foot on the clutchpedal. It does not allow fullengine power to be transmittedto the vehicle and reduces clutchlife.

Fuel economy speeds :Always adhere to following fueleconomy speeds.

Gear Speed (kmph)1st 102nd 20 - 303rd 30 - 504th 50 - 70

FUEL CUT-IN / CUT-OFF STRATEGY:The ECU has been programmed tolimit the following speed of thevehicle.

Gear

Petrol PetrolAbove Below

low level low level1st 35 35 302nd 60 60 553rd 90 90 754th 105 105 105

As a good driving practice, alwaysshift to a higher gear before reachingthe speed limit specified for thatgear. In case the gear is not shiftedand you continue to drive in thesame gear beyond the specifiedspeed, the ECU will activate the fuelcut-off strategy and restrict vehiclespeed to the specified limit. This isto ensure optimum fuel efficiencyand prolonged engine life.

WARNINGDo not leave the key inside thecar.Do not leave children unattendedin the car.Avoid parking the car overinflammable materials, such asdry leaves, grass etc., as theexhaust system is hot enough toinitiate ‘FIRE’.

NOTICEWhen parking on a steep slope,do not rely on the parking brakealone to hold the vehicle. Leavethe vehicle parked with gear boxin low forward gear when facinguphill and reverse gear whenfacing downhill.

ParkingPark the car in a safe place.Apply the parking brake.Ensure that all window glasses areclosed & all lamps are turned ‘OFF’At night, put on the parking lights ifrequired.

The non-booster type brakingsystem may not be fitted in theStandard model, while the CX andLX models are provided withbooster-assisted braking system. The booster and non-boosterversions provide similar brakingperformance for the vehicle. However, the amount of braking effortrequired by the driver to activate thebrakes would be lesser in the brake-booster models.

Gear Shifting :The gearshift pattern is shown on thegear shift lever knob. All forwardgears being synchronized, provideeasy and effortless gear shifting.Always remember to press the clutchpedal fully while shifting the gearsand also to release the clutch pedalgently.

Avoid sudden clutching i.e. abruptrelease of depressed clutch pedal.

NOTICEThe reverse gear should beengaged only when the car isstationary. Wait for 5 seconds afterde clutching to ensure smoothengagement of the reverse gear.

BrakingThe distance required to bring a carto a halt increase with the speed ofthe vehicle. The braking distanceneeded for vehicle at 60 kmph will beapproximately 4 times greater than thebraking distance needed at 30 kmph.Anticipate your stop, slowdowngradually and apply brake. If water gets into the brake drums, brake performance may become poorand unpredictable. After driving throughwater or washing the underside of thevehicle, test the brake while driving atslow speed to see if they havemaintained there normaleffectiveness. If the brakes are lesseffective than normal, dry them byrepeatedly applying the brake whiledriving slowly until the brakes haveregained their normal effectiveness.

Driving Through Water :

Never venture to drive through waterwhen it flows over the guard stoneson a bridge.

Your car’s engine may get seriouslydamaged if attempted to crossthrough deep water. If at all thesituation demands that you have todrive through water then;

• Keep engine in fast idling andcrawl the car in low gear.

• After driving through water, applybrakes several times to dry theliners and to regain originalbraking.

Do not attempt to start the engine ifcar gets flooded with water.

Tow the car to a safe place.

Take the car to nearest TATAauthorised workshop to check entryof water in cylinders.

If water has entered the engine, ortransaxle, the lubricants will have tobe replaced. Get the starter andalternator checked.

Driving on a Rainy Day :

Check brakes, steering, windows, tyres for wear and tyre pressure.Check wiper blades for properfunctioning. Avoid harsh braking andsharp turns. It may cause loss ofcontrol and lead to a skid. Forslowing down, shift to lower gearsand brake gently. Keep lights ON ifvisibility is poor.

Night Driving :

Dip the head lamp for oncomingtraffic during night driving.

Maintain a speed such that you canstop within illuminated distance ofhead lamps.

Use head lamp main/dip beam toalert other road users on turns/crossroads etc.

DRIVING DRIVING IN ADVERSE CONDITION

Use side indicators for lane changeor turning.Switch on hazard warning switch incase of hazardous parking or if yourvehicle is disabled to warn thepassing traffic.

Climbing Sharp Gradients onLoose Surfaces :

If the wheels start to slip within fewfeet of the end of the climb, motioncan be maintained by swinging thesteered wheels left and right, therebyproviding increased grip.If the vehicle stalls or lossesheadway while climbing a steep hill, make a quick shift to reverse andallow the vehicle to move back withthe control of engine compression.

Descending Sharp Gradients :

Start off smoothly in any suitablegear. Apply power smoothly so thatthere is no loss of traction by over-revving of the engine.Choose as smooth a slope aspossible and select the appropriategear so that gear changing in themiddle of the climb is not required.Changing gears in the middle of theclimb can cause loss of momentumand engine stalling. Shifting to lowergear has to be done cautiously toavoid loss of traction.Under no conditions should thevehicle be moved diagonally acrossa hill. The danger is in loss of tractionand sideways slippage, possiblyresulting in toppling over. Ifunavoidable, choose as mild anangle as possible and keep thevehicle moving.

Depending on the severity of thegradient, shift into appropriate gear.Use engine braking judiciouslywithout over-revving the engine.Brake application under suchsituations should be done verysmoothly to avoid loss of control.Select appropriate gear so that gearchanging or clutch disengagementis not involved while descending thegradient.

MAINTENANCEENGINE OIL & ENGINE COOLANT

ENGINE OIL LEVEL

ENGINE OIL TOP-UPRemove the oil filler cap and pouroil slowly through the filler hole tobring the oil level to the upper limiton the dipstick. Be careful not tooverfill. Too much oil is almost asbad as too little oil. After refilling, startthe engine and allow it to idle forabout a minute. Stop the engine; letthe oil settle and check oil levelagain.

ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL

Engine oil level should be checkedwhen engine is cold. Allow at least30 mins. for engine oil to settlebefore checking oil level.1. For checking engine oil level,

pull out the dipstick from theengine oil case, wipe it clean witha cloth or a paper napkin.

2. Insert it again to its originalposition.

3. Pull out the dipstick again andobserve the oil level on thedipstick.

4. If the oil level is below the midpoint of min. and max. marks, topup using recommended gradeof oil.

NOTICEOil level should not exceed themax. Mark. Always check the oillevel when the car is on a levelground and the engine in coldcondition.Check the engine oil level if “low oilpressure” warning comes 'ON'while driving. Failure to check the

1. Engine Filling Cap 2. Dip Stick

oil level regularly could lead toserious trouble due to insufficientoil.

The coolant level in the coolant no-loss tank should be between max.& min. marks. This can be viewedthrough a translucent reservoir. Ifless, add coolant up to the max.mark and refit the cap properly.

NOTICECheck coolant level in the radiator,by opening the pressure cap(ensure vehicle is in cold condition). If coolant level is seen below fillerneck top, then add specifiedpre-mixed coolant (50:50).

CAUTIONNever remove the filler cap whenthe engine is hot. Use onlybranded premixed ready to usecoolant. In case of emergency usenormal water only. When a propercoolant mixture is available, theentire system should be flushed& filled with the same at theearliest.

AIR FILTER :

The air filter element should beperiodically cleaned.

Always use a genuine air filterelement.

The air filter is located on the LH sideof the engine compartment.

a) When a vehicle is driven underdusty conditions, frequentcleaning and replacement of theair-cleaner element isnecessary.

b) Clogged air-cleaners lead togreater intake resistance andresult in increased fuelconsumption. Using lowpressure compressed air, blowoff dust on the air cleanerelement. If the air cleanerelement appears to be choked, replace it with a new one.

SPARK PLUG :

TyresCheck for inflation and condition ofyour car tyres periodically.

Inflation :Check the pressure in the tyres whenthey are cold.

You should have your own tyrepressure gauge and use it at alltimes. This makes it easier for you totell if pressure loss is caused by atyre problem and not by variationbetween gauges.

Keeping the tyres properly inflatedgives you the best combination ofcomfort, handling, tyre life and betterfuel efficiency.

Over inflation of tyres makes the carride bumpy and harsh. Tyres aremore prone to uneven wear anddamage from road hazards.

1 2 31. Underinflation : Excessive Side

Tread Wear2. Correct Tyre Pressure :

Uniform Tyre Wear

3. Overinflation : ExcessiveCentre Tread Wear

Under inflated tyres reduce yourcomfort in car handling and are proneto failures due to high temperature. They also cause uneven wear andmore fuel consumption.

CAUTIONEvery time you check inflationpressure, you should alsoexamine tyres for damage, foreignobjects and wear.

Recommended Tyre Pressures

Tyres size :Front 135/70R12Rear 155/65R12Spare 135/70R12Tyre pressure :Front 26-28 psi / 1.8-1.9 kg/cm2

Rear 28-30 psi / 1.9-2.0 kg/cm2

Spare 28-30 psi / 1.9-2.0 kg/cm2

CAUTIONReplace the tyre if you find eitherof these conditions.• Bumps or bulges in the tread

or the side of the tyre.• Cuts, splits or cracks in the side

of the tyre. Replace the tyre ifyou notice this on the fabric orcord.

• Excessive tread wear or nonuniform tyre wear.

NOTICELower air pressure (Front - 26 &Rear - 28 psi) is recommended ifyou prefer riding comfort

MAINTENANCE TYRES

Repairing a Tyre :

Mark the tyre position (if originalcolour dot mark is not visible) withrespect to valve stem hole to ensurethat the tyre is refitted in the originallocation on the wheel rim.

Ensure that balancing weights arenot disturbed during removal of tyres.

Check the balance weight prior to theremoval of the tyre. If found loose, mark its location on the rim & refitproperly.

Balance the wheel after everydismantling and assembly of tyre onthe wheel rim if required.

While fitting wheels on the vehicleensure that wheel pins are free fromdust, scratches, dirt, dents, etc.

NOTICEDo not apply any oil on the wheelpins. Wipe off the oil if present.

Special care for tubeless tyres

1. While removing tyre from wheelrim and mounting it back onwheel rim, take precautions notto damage tyre bead. Use tyreremoval and assemblymachines. Damage or cut on tyrebead may cause gradual loss ofair and deflation of tyre.

2. Do not scratch inside of tubelesstyre with metallic or sharp object.Tubeless tyres are coated withimpermeable layer of rubberfrom inside which holds the air

inside the tyre. Removal of thislayer due to scratching maycause gradual loss of air anddeflation.

3. If wheel rim gets damaged inservice, get the wheel rimrepaired/replaced immediately.Running the vehicle withdamaged rim may causedeflation of tyre and subsequentdislodging of tyre from rim.

4. Maintain recommended inflationpressure. Over-inflation, inparticular, may cause punctureor bursting of tyre.

NOTICELife and wear pattern of tyresdepends on various parameterslike tyre pressure, wheelalignment, wheel balancing, tyrerotation, etc. It also largelydepends on vehicle speed, loadcarried, usage, driving habits, road conditions, tyre quality, etc.In case fault is suspected to bedue to poor quality of tyres, thesame may be taken up withconcerned tyre manufacturer.
