Taster sessions at Kirklees CollegeTaster sessions are a great way to find out about a subject area and
decide if it’s the right option for you. They are open to students in Years 9-13. Sessions are targeted at Years 11-13 during October to December, Years 9-10 during January to Easter and Year 9 during Easter to June. If the session takes place during the school day then you will need to get your school to sign the booking form authorising you to miss school. For twilight sessions, (after school hours) just complete the booking form and return it to us with a parent or carer’s signature. We will then send you further information about attending the session. Please note, sessions are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are free to take part in. Sessions will run subject to minimum numbers.
NB we will need at least one weeks’ notice to book onto a session.
CompetitionsThere is the opportunity to take part in exciting competitions as a school group or as an individual,
including: Young Chef of the year, INNOV8, Matchfit and football tournaments to name a few.
Information for teachers and parents/carersThere is a lot of information in this booklet from our centre
information to CV and interview workshops. You can visit college for a tour, book us to come into schools to speak to your students about what we offer post-16, in your careers events and assemblies. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact us on [email protected] or call us on 01484 437092.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)
Deciding what to do after your GCSEs can be quite daunting, and for some young people and their families it can be a confusing time.
The Student Recruitment Team arrange and host a variety of activities to help young people with their decision making and hopefully take the stress out this process, and make the move to college easier.
This booklet is designed for young people, their parents/carers and school teachers.
Young people can book onto activities and competitions individually, or via school. For teachers it provides an overview of activities available, but is in no means exhaustive.
Our curriculum teams are keen to come into schools to deliver workshops and work with students.
If you have any questions after reading this guide then please don’t hesitate to contact the Student Recruitment Team.
Welcome to the Kirklees College taster session and events booklet, which has been created for both students and teachers.

Festival seasons have been all about flower crowns and colourful lipstick, 2019’s style guide is more sophisticated; championing low key stylish make up and low-key up-dos and of course, a touch of glitter here and there, a festival is a perfect time to experiment.
Think about the hair style, the make-up and clothing and create A3 mood board of what you imagine the style to look like. Think about the colours, styles and textures.

Kirklees College is excited to deliver the next stage of the Dewsbury Learning Quarter Development with the opening of Pioneer House in September 2020.
The specialist centre will cater for Creative and Digital Industries, higher level qualifications, Apprenticeships, work skills and adult learning, and will continue the drive to improve education and increase the skills of local people. This will be a centre where many young people can access further qualifications once they have completed their initial programme of study.
Pioneer House is a Victorian Grade II listed building in the centre of Dewsbury. It opened in 1880 and originally housed the Dewsbury Pioneers’ Industrial Society Ltd, later known as the Dewsbury Co-operative Society Ltd.
The original building was designed by architects Henry Holtom and George Fox, who also designed the nearby Town Hall and local schools and churches.
Throughout its history, the building has been home to a cinema, theatre, library, butchers, cobblers, snooker hall and an Italian restaurant.
Pioneer Centre won’t just be about work and study, but will also play host to a Starbucks Coffee shop, bistro and social spaces for you to eat, drink and relax.
The new centre means the introduction of new courses and these courses have been designed with your future career opportunities in mind.
