FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

2019 is a fascinating year for education in both Queensland and Australia. Whilst Queensland schools are transitioning from a senior student outcome of Ops to come into line with other states that use an ATAR for tertiary selection, nationally there are a number of developments occurring. It has been pleasing to see the role many of our staff have taken in this new Queensland senior phase structure, whether through their contribution and work with the QCAA curriculum or assessment development teams, or being invited to write sections for the publishers of new Queensland textbooks. It was terrific to host Mr Chris Rider, CEO of the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) late last year who has worked with a number of our TAS staff over the years. As some of you would be aware, we received a letter from the Chair of the Standing Committee on Employment, Education, and Training, Mr Andrew Laming MP to congratulate TAS on our extraordinary growth in learning of last year’s graduating cohort (ranked in the top 10 schools in Queensland) between Year 9 NAPLAN in 2015 and Year 12 Outcomes in 2018. Consequently we were very pleased that the Hon Dan Tehan, Federal Minister for Education, chose Trinity Anglican School to host a meeting with primary and secondary sector principals and leaders to discuss changes and developments in national education initiatives.Recently, Federal, State and Territory education ministers (a group known as the Education Council) met in Melbourne and held a forum to start the discussion on reviewing the National Goals of Schooling. These goals are part of what is known as the Melbourne Declaration: https://ministers.education.gov.au/tehan/updating-australias-education-agenda. As the pace in educational policy and approach change at an increasing rate, we need to ensure that developments are backed by data and evidence, and not simply a fad. Many schools, with the right intent, implement new approaches that are ideologically or financially based rather than proven structures that will improve student educational outcomes. Our prime goal in education is to prepare our young people to be successful and active

engagers in the 21st century. As we hear about the successes of past graduates, we know we are on the right track. As part of these changes, there is also a national review of senior secondary education taking place this year https://www.education.gov.au/national-school-reform-agreement-0. This process may be a game changer, with the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, Mark Scott, called for an overhaul of the use of ATARs for university entrance, which he described as ‘a strait jacket around our kids’.I will be meeting in Week 8 in Brisbane with a selection of independent school principals at the ISQ Education Committee to formulate our response to a variety of strategies currently being discussed on a national level. One of the national conversations taking place is based around a paper by Professor Alan Reid AM, commissioned by ASPA, which outlines ‘a process for thinking about futures for Australian education’.I am confident that TAS has excellent curriculum and pedagogical practices in place, with a combination of traditional approaches and new platforms that allow our students to maximize their learning. Our internal PAT testing, at the start and end of each year, provide rich data for staff to analyse and use to improve what we do, whilst also illustrating the excellent gains in learning our students are making each year.Having said that, there are always areas we can improve in and we will continue to work as hard as we can to do so.

Paul

REMEMBERING KARA

The TAS Community is in mourning at the passing of our Miss P; and it was with great sadness that we paid our respects to her at a memorial service in our Bishop Centre. TAS students honoured her with prayers and readings, and past students shared their stories of the massive impact she had on their lives.

At the conclusion of the service, students, staff and guests were invited to light a candle in her honour.

During the service, Mr Sjogren mentioned a benevolent fund for Arawyn, and we genuinely thank those who have generously enquired about this fund. Befitting Kara’s passion for the reef, TAS has also set up the Kara Pylypiuk Memorial Coral Garden through the Reef Restoration Foundation.

This adopted ocean-based garden is part of the Great Barrier Reef at Fitzroy Island and forms part of the project to regenerate and recover our beautiful coral reefs. An area we all know was close to Kara’s heart.

Should you wish to contribute and expand this Memorial Garden, your donation can be made at any TAS reception. For each $50, an additional piece of coral can be added creating an even greater coral garden in memory of Kara, but donations of any size are welcome.

Donations received by 30 March will form part of our TAS garden for Miss P. Alternatively, your own individual donation can be made on the Reef Restoration Foundation’s website.

Counsellor’s CornerEveryone goes through difficult times. Life is a bit like a roller coaster – with lots of highs and lows.

Family and friends can be of great support, but sometimes it helps to talk to someone who is not involved in your life.

A school counsellor can:

assist you with ‘bouncing back’ from hard times

help you manage feelings and find solutions to problems

help you set goals and stay on track to accomplish them

encourage you to find your passions in life

support you and advocate for you

help you manage your studies and motivation

Benefits of seeing a counsellor Sometimes it’s good to talk to someone who is not a family member, teacher or friend.

A counsellor has time to listen to you at your pace.

A counsellor will not judge you.

You can talk in a safe and comfortable place about whatever you need to.

The sessions are private and confidential, unless the counsellor suspects you or someone else might be at risk of harm or the counsellor has your permission to share your information with someone else (e.g. a parent or teacher).

Counsellors help you work out the solutions to your problems and give you tools to help, rather than tell you what to do.

A counsellor can refer you to extra support outside school if necessary.

When, where, how?

Our counsellor, Miss Eva Horn, is on campus at White Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at Kewarra Beach Junior on Wednesdays.

Students can drop in to the library (at WR) or Wellbeing centre (at KBJ) to speak to the counsellor or talk to their Head of House (in the Senior School) or their teacher (in the Junior Schools).

Parents or guardians who wish to refer their child for counselling can speak to their child’s teacher or head of campus (in the Junior School) or Head of House (in the Senior School).

TAS Staff - Fun Facts Ms Joyce Lester recently attended the Asia Pacific Softball Cup in Sydney as an Australian Selector.

This event was an international competition with two Australian teams, with a Japanese, Chinese, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand and Italian teams.

A new event, The Summer Slam was introduced this year which is a shortened version of a softball game with only three innings and loaded bases at the start of each innings. Players from all teams were scattered throughout the teams playing and Fox Sports televised this new event.

Joyce was one of the expert commentators during this event with Drury Forbes and Olympian, Fiona Crawford.

Long before he was a TAS Bus Driver, Ray Wheeler held the official water skiing record from Sydney to Newcastle of 1 hour 55 minutes.

He completed the full round trip of 222 kms - Ray and his bleeding feet landed on Little Manly Cove 3 hours and 47 minutes after they left it on 11 July 1979.

He held this record for 30 years, a remarkable achievement. Thanks for letting us share your story, Ray.

Healthy Eating RecipeOven Baked Chicken and QuinoaRecipe from Foodwatch | foodwatch.com.au Ready In: 50 minutes Serves: 4 This dish is the perfect example of something you can #CookAhead or #CookOnceEatTwice. It combines wholegrains, lean protein and a variety of vegetables into one fuss-free meal. It’s delicious eaten on the day, but can also be enjoyed the day after.

I’ve used taco seasoning as most brands will be a blend of cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and dried herbs. This saves you the trouble of having to individually add these spices. However, make your choice carefully many brands have sugar as one of the first three ingredients! The best we could find was Masterfoods where sugar was the 7th ingredient. They all also contain salt. Old El Paso salt-reduced had the lowest salt count but of the “regular” varieties Masterfoods was the lowest.

INGREDIENTS:1 onion, thinly sliced3 cloves garlic, minced1 red capsicum, de-seeded and thinly sliced1 green capsicum, de-seeded and thinly sliced2 tbs taco seasoning1 cup quinoa300g tin corn, drained700g, or roughly 4 chicken thighs, diced into 2cm chunks1 ¼ cup salt reduced chicken stock2 cups or 2 large handfuls baby spinach

TO SERVE:Fresh coriander, finely chopped to garnish.Nutrition per serve2074 kJ (495 Calories), 44g Protein, 14g Fat (including 3.5g sat fat), 45g Carbohydrate (including 8g sugars), 8g fibre and 796mg sodium

DIRECTIONS:Pre-heat an oven to 180ºC fan forced.Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a pan. Once hot, add the onion, garlic, red and green capsicum. Sauté for 5 minutes, or until softened.Add the taco seasoning and quinoa and mix well so the quinoa is coated in the spice mix. Remove from the heat and mix in the chicken thighs and tinned corn.Transfer the mixture into a large baking dish, add the chicken stock and cover with foil.Bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the liquid has completely evaporated.Remove from the oven and gently fold in the baby spinach leaves to wilt.Garnish with some fresh coriander and enjoy!

With Camp Tinaroo being closed for repairs and renovations, our Year 3 students this year went to Camp Paterson for their Outdoor Education Program.

The Year 3 students spent three days and two nights away from home, which, for many, was the longest time they had ever spent away from their parents.

We had an amazing 100% attendance rate which is fantastic.

During the program students completed three major activity rotations including team activities, bush discovery and lake exploration. Among these activities students enjoyed completing the water-based inflatable obstacle course as well as the dry-land one, learning

about the many freshwater macroinvertebrates found in a freshwater lake environment, canoeing to check the yabby pots and creating bush art masterpieces.

On the final morning before solo time and group debrief, the students were involved in an environmental community service project in the form of tree planting.

TAS Outdoor Education has planted more than 100 trees previously at Camp Paterson and we were able to add another 45 to that total.

We look forward to the time when these students hike into Camp Paterson during the Year 8 Outdoor Education Program, walking past these trees which they planted as small shrubs 5 years earlier.

FirstAidStudents from the Year 10 Outdoor Recreation Program have been completing their Remote and Wilderness First Aid Course over the past three weeks with Jason Taylor from Specialised Outdoor Survival. They particularly enjoyed completing several realistic scenarios involving

some fake blood and pretend broken bones. They will continue to practice various scenarios throughout the year as part of their program and it’s great to see students with this level of first aid knowledge and confidence.

Duke of Edinburgh (International) Awards

We currently have a growing number of students working on bronze, silver and gold awards of the Duke of Edinburgh (International Award) Scheme and it’s great to see such a high level of enthusiasm to attain these widely-recognised awards The sign up period for Year 9 students will be just prior to the Year 9 Outdoor Education Program as the minimum age to start the awards is 14.5 years.Fletcher Le Sueur and Nathaniel Smyth were recently presented with their Bronze Level Awards at School Assembly – congratulations.

World Challenge India 2019 Update

This week our two World Challenge India teams of 31 students met to review their draft expedition itinerary and learn more about their equipment requirements. Expedition leaders have now been assigned by World Challenge and both of them know our school well. Marika will lead our team of Year 10 students and she is also one of our outdoor education contractors we employ for our Year 7, 8 and 9 Outdoor Education Programs. She knows several of the Year 10 group well already as she was their leader on the Year 9 Outdoor Education Program last year. The Year 11 group will again have Tony from the UK, and he has lead two previous trips of ours with Ms Warren and myself, to both Tanzania and Nepal. It’s great to have such high calibre leaders who know our school and students well. The teams’ flights will soon be booked as it’s now less than 9 months or 260 days until departure.

Learning RemindersBookmark

The “Learning Reminders” bookmark / business card has been developed for all students to take with them on completion of their Outdoor Education Program. This will serve as a reminder of lessons learned and also outlines ways for students to get more involved in the outdoors, to help the environment and get further information and help if needed.
