Task 5

Similar Magazines • As the chosen music genre for my music magazine will be pop,

similar music magazines catering to the genre that I could base mine on would be magazines such as ‘Top of the Pops’, ‘Smash Hits’, ‘Billboard’ and ‘Blender’.

• Ideas• On the front cover of all of these magazines there is the use of

bright colours; I can use this as inspiration for my own magazine because I know that this is what attracts the target audience. Another thing I will be using is the idea of the main image being portrayed slightly in front of the masthead; this would be effective because it makes the pop artists in the main image look important and stand out.

• The ideas of the articles on these magazines are pop music, fashion and gossip; I will try to incorporate this into my magazine as this is something that would attract the target audience.

• The mastheads for all of the magazines are concise to grab attention and stand out; for my magazine this is an element I will be considering. For example ‘Pop!’ would sound better than ‘Pop Music Magazine’ because it is shorter, stands out more and, would probably be more recognisable.

Type of imagery associated with it?

• Attire –the artists that fit into the pop genre share similar clothing styles. Female pop artists tend to conform to casual ‘high street fashion’ or wear stereotypical feminine outfits such as dresses with heels and the males jeans or chinos with t-shirts, cardigans , jackets or blazers; all of these outfits have a modern look to them (some even with a quirky touch) in order to reinforce the modern element

• Hair styles/cuts –the hair styles/cuts associated with the pop genre are very similar to one another as this idea of ‘popularity’ relates back to the concept of pop, ‘popular music’
