Unit 57: Photography and Photographic PractiseProject Proposal

(P2, P3, M2, M3, D2, D3)

Candidate name:

Theme: Architectural Exploration of Salford Quays

Predicted final outcome

Delete these bits before you fill them in…

What are you going to produce (you need to choose 10 final images)

As a class we are visiting Salford quays to take 50 landscape photographs of greater Manchester. Out of theses 50 complete photos I then need to finalise and decide on 10 of my favourite and photos which I’ve taken. The theme is Architectural exploration which suites the quays very well as there is a lot of unusual buildings at the Lowry so we can shoot some photos of those buildings to match the theme. We are visiting the quays during the day so I think I might plan a night to go back to take some photos of the city in the dark the use of different shutter speeds and iso could make the current pictures look better and benefit my photography.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

Why you want to take these imagesWhich photographers produce similar images you like – find 3

Ross Hoddinott is a professional photographer and his work is very influential towards my photography, he takes wide distance landscape shots mostly of mountains and unusual buildings which could help me take pictures of the buildings at Lowry.

Adam Burton is also a landscape photographer much like Ross Hoddinott he uses simple objects in his photography which express the background to look more unique. He also uses a lot of rivers and lakes which could influence my work by using the quays as a good example for my work.

The next photographer which is a good inspiration for my work and I have looked in great depth of his work and his photography is very unique and interesting. David Taylor is a professional landscape photographer who focuses on a lot of bright colours in his photos, he uses lights and coloured objects which contrast the photo and makes it eye catching. I’ve also seen many landscape photos of cities which influence my work as I will be taking photos of Manchester and trying to capture more light and colour would help a lot in my photography.

Analysing these photographers photos there are key elements which inspire me to try other techniques to use when taking my photos at Salford quays.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

Use your camera… plus whatever else you think put some info about your cameraThe camera I will be using during this Salford quays visit will be a Nikon D3100 this camera involves:14.2 megapixelsSensor size and type: 23.1 x 15.4 mm CMOSHD video: Full HD 1080pISO Speed Range: 100-3200This camera will work well as it shoots in 1080p which is a good high quality camera also it shoots from both low ISO speeds and high Iso

speeds so I can vary from the two when shooting at night where I will need more light and during the day when there may be too much light so it benefits for both occasions. I will also be using a tripod for some shots so there will be no camera shake or blurry photos when shooting my pictures.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

Eg framing, styles, shutter speeds, etc

The quays and Manchester city have always got lights and many colours glowing up so this will be a good way to test out shutter speeds and ISO to try and get perfect pictures controlling how much light intended in the photos. Depending how the weather turns out on the day either dull or sun shine bright I don’t know what shutter speeds and ISO I would be focusing on, also maybe I would be going back to the same spots after the visit but during the night to capture more colours and different textures with in the photos I have already taken. Doing this I can then compare the two same photos which one has been taken at night and one at day then comparing which looks better or could do with being improved or taken at a different angle. I think I would use bigger objects as backgrounds when shooting my landscape photography because landscape pictures work better when focusing on smaller objects in the foreground and having the bigger objects as use of a background.

Location of shoot

Salford quays:Media City UK:Manchester City:

(give a bit of info about the Quays include a map & image)

The quays have many unusual buildings surrounding the river which are unique shapes and would be

interesting to shoot in different ways. There is also media city, the Lowry and Manchester city all in close region so there will be a good bunch of interesting things to shoot when taking the photos. The city and the quays is a good place to shoot because it’s not dull there are always lights and colours from all directions at the city so you can work a lot with the shutter speed when taking photos. I would like to shoot media city because when analysing the colours in the photos above there is a lot going on and I think it would be a good way to test my photography skills.
