that, but we certainly think it's a cool place where everyone should have quality

binoculars within their reach.

Optical SystemsPorro Prisms: This design has been aproven performer for over 100 years. Thedistinctive, off-set binocular housingsaccommodate two internal porro prismsthat are used to elongate the light path toenable higher magnifications than primi-tive field or "opera" glasses. Porro prismbinoculars typically deliver exceptionallyhigh optical quality at more affordableprices than roof prism binoculars of thesame power rating (see below).

Roof Prisms: Roof prism binoculars arestreamlined and compact because theyutilize trim roof-shaped prisms to elongatethe light path. Roof prism binoculars areusually more expensive than equivalentporro prism models.

Anti-Reflective Optical CoatingsBecause glass surfaces reflect back up to 4% of any light that passes through,a binocular built without anti-reflective coating on its lens surfaces woulddeliver a very poor, darkened image. Most better-quality binoculars treat allor most of the lens surfaces with vacuum-deposited layers of magnesium fluoride and other exotic elements to reduce light loss through reflection –which increases light transmission and delivers a bright, clear view.Typically, the more lens and prism surfaces that are coated, the brighter andclearer the image, but at an incremental increase in cost.

Coated Lenses: This meansthat some lens and prism surfacesare coated to produce a reasonablybright image at a modest cost.

Fully Coated Lenses: All air-to-glass surfaces are coated for aneven brighter view.

Multi-Coated: This meansthat the manufacturer applied multiple coats of anti-reflectivelayers to most of the lens and prism surfaces.

Fully Multi-Coated: Thebrightest and most expensiveoption, where all surfaces are treated with multiple layers for optimum light transmission.

UVC Coating: A special coatingto filter out ultra-violet rays toreduce glare and help protect theuser's eyes from harmful UV rays.

Rubicon Coated: A Tasco‚

exclusive, comprised of 14 differentlayers of multi-coating on the objec-tive lens with a ruby-red tint to fil-ter out red light for reduced glare inbright light.

Magnification: Magnification is how much closer an objectappears when viewed through a spotting scope or other opticalinstrument. A scope with 15x magnification will make distantobjects appear to be 15-times closer than they really are. If thescope features a 15 – 45x adjustable “zoom” eyepiece, it meansyou can manually increase the magnification from 15-times to 45-times with a simple twist of a dial.

Objective Lens Size: The size of the light-gathering objective lensis key to the brightness of a spotting scope’s image, which is why the lens size (in millimeters) always appears alongside thescope's magnification designation. So, a 15 – 45x60mm scope has an adjustable magnification ranging from 15x to 45x - and an objective lens that is 60mm in diameter.

Eye Relief: Eye relief is the farthest distance your eye can bepositioned away from the eyepiece and still see the entire field-of-view. A long eye relief is especially important to users who weareyeglasses when looking through a spotting scope - or any otheroptical product.

Field-of-View (F.O.V.): This indicates how wide the circle of view is at a distance of 1,000 yards. Usually spotting scopes with highmagnification have smaller fields-of-view than those with lowermagnifications.

Focal Length: Focal length is the distance between the point whereincoming light meets the first optical element and the point where itpasses through the eyepiece to create a magnified image. Focal lengthdetermines the telescope’s magnification and the longer the focal length,the more powerful the telescope.

Power: The power, or magnification rating, is the result of a mathemati-cal calculation that divides the focal length of the telescope with thefocal length of the eyepiece to determine how much closer the telescopemakes distant objects appear. A 200 power telescope makes a distantplanet appear 200 times closer – or 200 times larger than it really is.

So, a 3-9x40mm is a scope with a variable zoom magnifica-tion from 3x to 9x with a 40 millimeter objective lens.
