BAD HORSE KINETIC TYPE PROJECTSpring Semester 2019

For this project, we chose a short 10-30 second sound clip and animated type from the clip itself. I chose the song Bad Horse from the youtube short Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long blog, which featured Neil Patrick Harris as a failing evil scientist who is set on joining the Evil League of Evil, helmed by Bad Horse. He is, in fact, an actual horse. The song itself is evocative of the old west, so I decided to use early 1900’s circus posters as design inspiration for the backgrounds and type.

IFC STATION IDSpring Semester 2019

IFC is an oddball comedy television station that hosts a wide range of shows, both original and classics. For my station ID, I wanted to incorporate the range of content that IFC has to offer. They have pe-riod shows set in the 1930’s and 1970’s, as well as an original vampire centric horror-comedy and a wide range of other things.

Packaging Design

ANDROMEDA TEA PACKAGING SYSTEMFall Semester 2019

For this project, we were tasked with making a system of packaging that would all flow together under one brand, with different sizes of boxes.

I wanted to make a tea gift set that I would like to receive as a tea drinker and I thought that a galaxy themed set in a wooden box would be an attractive addition to my tea collection. All the teas and items included are named after different galaxies, and the set comes with a strainer spoon and an oak spice container that holds loose leaf tea on one side and sugar on the other, as well as pyramid tea sampler boxes and an Andromeda II mug.

OBSTGARTEN LIQEUR LABELFall Semester 2019

I guess it’s true what they say in design: The more you struggle with a project, the better the end result. After a few days of shedding many a tear of frustration , I arrived at this: Obstgarten. I wanted to pick a name that sounded fancier in another language than in English and was just coming down from a trip to Sigfried’s, a German restaurant and store in Downtown SLC, that resulted in me scarfing down 16 Irish Creme chocolates. I built the design around the idea of an orange flavored liqeur and thought that a watercolor illustration would give it a more personal feel.

5 Hour EnergySpring Semester 2020

I feel that anyone that has or has been around children will relate to this in class Ad-in-an-hour assignment. The client was 5 Hour Energy, and our simple truth was “Do more with your day.” Our directive was to find a way to surprise the audience and I started thinking of all the horrible things that could happen if your child got into your stash of essential wake up juice. And so we have little Emily doing more with her day by giving the living room a pop of color.

Branded ContentSpring Semester 2020

If I had the money, I personally would have many art subscription boxes sent to my house, which is what gave me the idea for a Sharpie art box. The idea is an artist collaboration wherein artists would sign up for a mailing list, and would collaborate on an Exquisite Corpse project that would later be displayed on the Sharpie website and the Utah Museum of Contemporary art. The first person on the list would complete the head portion of the project, send it back to Sharpie, and they would send it to the second person who would then complete the torso, et, until the project is completed and sent back to Sharpie a final time.

SHARPIE UNITE

Thank you for joining SHARPIE UNITE and our effort to bring artists together. By joining our mailing list, you are taking part in a large scale collaborative art project initiated by Sharpie with the intent of showing the world something beautiful in these trying and stressful times.

Included in this box are an extra fine tip, bullet tip, and king size chisel tip markers for you to use on this project and keep afterward! We’ve also included an instruction card and an example of an exquisite corpse. After the project is finished, we will reach out to you via email so that you can see your work displayed on our website and at the Utah Museum of Contemporary art.

Visiting Designer

Fictional Badge ProjectSpring Semester 2020

The awesome and funny designer Erik DeWaal visited our class and helmed this fictional badge project. We were to make 4 fictional badges or logos for characters in a tv show, fictional band, plants, animals, etc. I chose the 2012 Disney show Gravity Falls (an absolute favorite of mine and a must watch if you love clever shows with mystery and adult humor that goes over kids’ heads). I went for an 80’s theme because I love everything 80’s and so does one of the characters in the show.

Typography

Type Specimen CardFall Semster 2018

This was such a fun experience. We used the letterpress studio in the U of U bookarts program to make type specimen cards for different typefaces The real limitor for this assignment was the amount of type available in certain sizes, or just the available typefaces themselves. We needed to have the entire alphabet represented, as well as numbers and some symbols. We also needd to have a short explanatory paragraph about the typeface. Most of us kept our paragraphs informative, but a couple of us decided to make it fun.

Entertainment IllustrationFall Semster 2019

I have to say, this was my favorite class to date. The instructor, Kent Christensen, is a talented illustrator and an all around wonderful human being who let us explore all of our off the wall ideas. For this assignment, we got to choose a movie, song, album, or tv show and do an illustration based off of it. I love Stephen King and had just fallen love with IT Chapter 2, so naturally I chose to do an IT Chapter 2 piece. I originally wanted to do playing cards with the intent of doing them digitally and printing them, but I was havingg technical issues with photoshop, so Kent suggested doing Watercolor Tarot cards instead. The edges of the card are lined in silver foil, and the balloons on the backs were done with a red foil sheet

Commercial IllustrationFall Semster 2019

This is easily my favorite projecct that came out of this class. The assignment was to make an illustration based off of a product like a food, or a car or something else that we enjoyed. I love anything pumpkin flavored and wanted to do a pumpkin milkshake as the product, and at the suggestion of my classmates and Kent, made a juxtoposition of a 1950’s diner and a pumpkin patch to make a cohesive world for the milkshake to live in. My favorite addition to this piece is Ed the Crow waiter, who started as a tentative suggestion by a classmate that I thought was fantastic.
