Tarnow Scientific Program Sets New Standards for Excellence at 4th Annual Columbia University/ICOI Implant SymposiumThe annual implant symposium, co-sponsored by the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and ICOI, was held December 13-14, 2013 at Lerner Hall on the main campus at Columbia University. Dr. Dennis P. Tarnow, Director of Implant Education at Columbia has been Scientific Chairman for this meeting since its inception in 2010 and has always designed a captivating program. However, according to ICOI Co-Chair, Dr. Kenneth Judy, the faculty and topics for the 2013 symposium were outstanding by any measure. The program and its truly international list of excellent speakers started on Friday morning, December 13, 2013 with Dr. Marco Degidi from Italy who spoke on “Immediate Loading and Final Esthetic Outcome: A Powerful Synergy”. Dr. Tidu Mankoo from the U.K. gave an absorbing lecture on “Restoration of ‘Failing’ Teeth with Implants in the Esthetic Zone”. Dr. Joseph Carpentieri from the Columbia faculty provided an “Interdisciplinary Approach to CAD/CAM and Digital Dentistry”, followed by Dr. Markus Hurzeler from Munich, Germany whose interesting topic was “The Socket-Shield Technique – Is it just a gimmick?”

Following our lunch break with the exhibitors, Dr. Christos Angelopoulos from Greece, gave a forceful interpretation to 3D imaging with his lecture, “The Hilly Terrain of 3D Imaging: What are we looking for? What are we missing? What should we be watching out for?” Dr. Richard Smith from New York City, presented a challenging lecture on “Immediate Moral Implant: a New Socket Classification System and Game-changing Treatment Protocol”. Dr. Ziv Mazor from Israel concluded day one of this symposium with his discussion on “A Minimally Invasive Approach to Sinus Augmentation”.

Day two started off with a bang. Dr. Istvan Urban from Budapest, Hungary, fascinated the audience with his “New Perspectives on Ridge Augmentation”, followed by Dr. Joao Carames from Lisbon, Portugal who conveyed in his lecture the advantages of “Full Arch Implant Rehabilitation: Surgical and Prosthetic Strategies for Predictable Results”. Dr. Francesco Amato from Catania, Italy dealt with “Hard and Soft Tissue Management for Long Term Esthetic Results in the Anterior Zone”. Following the mid-morning break, Dr. Eduardo Anitua,

specialist in Stomatology from Bilbao, Spain, gave a superb lecture on “Regenerative Dental and Facial Rejuvenation: The Essential Role of Growth Factors”. The symposium was brought to a close with Dr. Marc Nevins’ expansion on use of growth factors with his presentation “Esthetic Implant Site Development with Growth Factors: rhPDGF-BB”.

The customary question and answer session following each speaker and led by Drs. Tarnow and Judy, completed the outstanding educational process that has become “the norm” for symposia led by Dr. Tarnow at Columbia University.

During the symposium, Dr. Christian Stohler, Dean of Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, delivered a Welcome Address to the assembled.

ICOI’s Winter Implant Symposium Returns to New Orleans with the Customary Attendance and Enthusiasm from our DelegatesOn January 16-18, 2014, the ICOI and its Component Society, the ADIA, held the Winter Implant Symposium at the Marriott Marquis Canal Street, the southwest rampart of the French

Quarter of New Orleans. Over 700 persons filled the lecture and exhibit halls. A total of 67 companies displayed the latest in implant related goods and services. All this for our Winter Symposium as the start of Mardi Gras began on the streets of New Orleans.

The symposium began with several pre-symposium workshops run by our sponsors. Our Platinum Sponsor, MIS hosted a course given by Dr. Andrew M. Spector who held a hands-on course focusing on prosthetic driven planning using computer guided implantology. Zest Anchors one of our Gold Sponsors, presented a course by Drs. Michael Scherer and Andrew P. Ingel on narrow diameter over-denture implants using CBCT digital software. Intra-Lock, also a Gold Sponsor, provided a hands-on workshop by Dr. Robert J. Miller entitled, “The New Biologics…Growth Factors” regarding the use of L-PRF™.

BioHorizons and Dr. Jeffrey Babushkin’s course focus was on Pathways to Superior Esthetic Restoration: Incorporating Digital Impressions, Immediate Loading and Temporization. Dentsply Implants with Dr. Georgios E. Romanos offered a four-hour course on Evidenced Based Protocols Providing Long-Term Soft and Hard Tissue Stability. The ADIA Symposium delivered the newest concepts, techniques and technologies to keep team members on the cutting edge of advances in implant dentistry. Teresa Duncan started things off with the importance of documenting diagnosis: and why it matters. She was followed by Madison Montgomery, who focused on Regenerative Therapies in everyday clinical practice. Following the morning break, Vavi Bohbot “demystified” sutures for our attendees. And to finish out the first day, Carla Frey addressed the development and mastering of the comprehensive exam.

Friday morning started off with a discussion about New HIPAA Mandates and ensuring you are in compliance. Dr. Alvaro Ordonez, also speaker for the ICOI this weekend, was next at the podium to talk about Digital Integration in Implant Dentistry and obtaining great results with CBCT and Intra & Extra Oral Scanning. After the morning break another veteran of the ICOI podium, Dr. Konstantinos Valavanis focused his lecture on The Marginal Migration Concept: a surgical-prosthetic approach to enhance the perimplant tissues. And just before lunch, Dr. Ady Palti addressed how to build a successful implant practice.

The Friday afternoon session began with Dr. Avi Schetritt and his compelling presentation on Biological Modifiers for Hard and Soft Tissue Regeneration. Immediate Implant placement in the Esthetic Zone was next on the agenda. Dr. Guido Sarnachiaro dealt with the Dual Protocol Zone when addressing this topic. Dr. John Olsen presented the use of Botox and Dermal Fillers to make implant cases perfect. And to close out the day, Leslie Icenogle reviewed advanced coding for optimal insurance reimbursement.

Saturday was host to our world renowned certification programs. Yva Khalil presented the Dental Hygiene Implant Certification Program. Vavi Bohbot returned to the podium for the Dental Assisting Implant Certification Program. A long time speaker for the ADIA, Karen Young, led attendees through the Practice Management Implant Certification Program. And the Implant Coordinator Training Program was conducted by Carla Frey.

It was a successful weekend of education and fellowship. We look forward to seeing everyone in Chicago in August.

The IAOI’s 6th International Symposium was held November 13-16, 2013 at the Dan Hotel in Eilat, Israel. The success of this conference was highlighted with the presence of guests of honor, ICOI President, Dr. John Suzuki, and ICOI Board members, Dr. Ady Palti and Dr. Avi Schetritt.

A host of international speakers came to share scientific knowledge and clinical experience with conference participants and gave us a positive atmosphere of learning and knowledge exchange.

On November 21-22, 2013, in Mexico City, the National Autonomous University of Mexico Faculty of Dentistry and the ICOI, held their 4th International Congress of Implant Dentistry UNAM-ICOI at the Hotel de Mexico.

The organizers of the congress were Dr. Enrique Navarro Bori, Dean of Continuing Dental Education, Dr. Mario H. Rodriguez Tizcareño, Chair of the High Specialization Program in Implant Dentistry of the Postgraduate and Research Division and by Dr. Jose Arturo Fernandez Pedrero Director of the Faculty of Dentistry of the UNAM. They designed another outstanding scientific program of international speakers, which attendees responded to with enthusiasm. Over 500 dentists, students and auxiliary staff members came to Mexico City for this biannual implant event.

After the opening remarks of Dr. Fernandez Pedrero, the two-day main podium program was composed of Dr. Sergio Cacciacane, (Escuela Superior de Implantologia, Barcelona, Spain), Dr. Lyndon Cooper (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA), Dr. Carl Drago (Ohio State University College of Dentistry, USA), Dr. Patricio Dutrey (Universidad Católica, Buenos Aires, Argentina), Dr. Pablo Galindo Moreno (University of Granada, Granada, Spain), Dr. Scott Ganz (University of Medicine and Dentistry - New Jersey Dental School, New Jersey, USA), Dr. David Troncoso (Fundación CIEO Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, Bogota, Colombia), Dr. Milko Villaroel (Private Practice, Curitiba, Brazil). INDIAICOI India/Southeast Asia Forms a Scientific Committee

New ICOI AmbassadorsICOI Ambassadors’ Circle includes several world leaders in the field of implant dentistry who are taking the extra step to help promote not only implant education, but also membership in ICOI and commitment to its goals.

Dr. Lanka Mahesh and Dr. Girish Rao have been appointed to the ICOI Ambassadors’ Circle. They will join Dr. Firoze Mirza who will continue as an ICOI Ambassador.

The ICOI Executive Committee approved making a contribution of $25,000 (twenty-five thousand dollars) to the Philippine disaster relief fund to help in rebuilding that country following the typhoon that ravaged that country last year.

The money was sent to UNICEF and as described in our letter to UNICEF…..

“These monies are to be directed to the relief effort for the Philippines following devastating Typhoon Haiyan that recently hit that country. As an international association of dental professionals with members from the Philippines, we are especially sensitive to the suffering that their people are experiencing and hope that this donation will let them know of our concern.”

The report below was sent to us from Dr. Irfan Qureshi, ICOI Diplomate.

“The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in Scotland is renowned for its high standard of assessment and evaluation. They conduct an exam once a year, which is their most expensive exam at 2000 GBP. It is a 3-day exam including two written exams, one day of OSCEs and a case defence where you are examined on 4 cases that are submitted to the Royal College 3 months prior to the exam and are evaluated by 8 examiners. The 4 cases are of different types varying from single to multiple implants and at least one case with a grafting and augmentation procedure. The successful candidates are awarded with the title of Dip Imp Dent RCSEd (Diplomate Implant Dentistry Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh).

This September I was the first ever Pakistan based candidate to sit the exam, I also am now the first ever Pakistan based implant surgeon with this qualification.”
