The genres I am pursuing are that of a thriller/suspense with horror to create an eye catching hybrid. The following slides illustrate different genre’s percentage of enjoyment, the typical audience age percentage and the social class percentage. Within this I am going to analyse the data below and then come to a conclusion of the main target audience I will be aiming my film opening at. This slide shows that the genres of Thriller/Suspense is enjoyed being watched by 53% of people whereas Horror has a percentage of 32%. This signifies that the horror genre is almost one third of people compared to that of over half in thriller and suspense. This means that horror is not as popular though it is not quite a niche target audience as it is still near one third of people.

The above data shows that the typical primary audience for thriller/suspense are women of the age of 35+ in contrast to the secondary audience which is male 35+. This altogether contrasts to that of the horror genre in which the main primary audience are <35 females and secondary audience of <35 male. This data therefore shows that the older population of people enjoy the thriller/suspense compared to the younger audience of horror films. The C2 social class category is the highest percentage of audience compared to others.

The above shows the genre of film that people consider their favourite. Like the previous data the genre of thriller/suspense appears to be a more common choice with 26% of people saying it is their favourite whereas horror is considerably lower with 15%. This means that like before horror is less popular than thriller and suspense.

Page 4: Target Audience- Secondary Data

This data illustrates the favourite film genres by age and gender (demographic) percentages. Thriller/suspense is typically female 35+ as a primary audience and secondary male 35+. This is different to horror in which the primary audience is <35 females and the secondary audience males <35. This relates to the original general watching population and the percentages associated with them. Also, the most dominant percentage of social class remains the same for the highest percentage which is the C2 category.

This data shows what the general public would want to see more of in the future and the two that link to the genres I have chosen to do are ‘edge of seat thrillers’ which is at 52% more with primary audience of males at 66%. This differs to ‘dark horror’ which stands at a mere 28% with a primary audience of females below 35 being at a 39%. This therefore shows that there is wide variety of audiences but come from the same social class group.

In conclusion to this research and analysis I have found that the main target audience is that of females below the age of 35, despite the larger proportion of males wanting to see an increase in ‘edge of seat thrillers’. Therefore I want my film opening to typically appeal more to the female audience seeing as this is the larger primary audience though I would like to see an increase in the secondary male audience so will therefore make it a balanced film opening between the two genders.
