Target Audience Research - Secondary Data

TARGET AUDIENCE This is the top 18 this weekend’s domestic chart, according to www.the-numbers.com – I have highlighted the fantasy thriller films included in this list. I’ve noticed the distributor of these films are large film distribution companies (such as: Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal, etc), this explains it’s high grossing, although it’s total gross is not as high as other genres. This shows it is rather difficult to produce a successful fantasy/thriller film. This data also shows they are shown in many theatres. Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is a movie under the subgenre, Zombie, however it can be classified as a Fantasy/Thriller. Films like these are watched primarily by males over 35.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This is the top 18 this weekend’s domestic chart, according to www.the-numbers.com – I have highlighted the fantasy thriller films included in this list.

According to www.imdb.com; films from the weekend domestic chart are rated age 12A, and none are rated R – this tells me that Fantasy/Thrillers are watched by people under 35.

The Last Witch Hunter stars Vin Diesel; whose audience consists of mainly male’s over 35, this tells me that men over 35 watch Fantasy/Thrillers (sometimes because of the celebrity involved.)

Goosebumps is a film based on the children’s book series created by R.L Stine, because it was published in 1992, I assumed the people who want to watch the film will be teenagers or people in their twenties because they would have wanted to watch their favourite book created into a film. Also, since it used to be a children’s book therefore children are more likely to be a part of the audience.

On this chart from www.the-numbers.com, it shows thriller is the 5 th top grossing genre from 1995 – 2015 – which is more than $15 billion. There are 800 movies produced in this genre which is the 4 th

largest amount of movies in a genre. It’s average gross id the 3rd highest – this assures me that thrillers are more likely to make more revenue than others, thus making it a very successful genre, although its market share is not as high as others.

This piece of data from www.the-numbers.com, shows Fantasy as a Creative Type. It is the 3rd highest grossing creative type from 1995-2015, with 692 movies which is the 4th highest amount of movies per creative type shown. This tells me fantasy films are not commonly produced in the film industry – probably because of the difficulty of producing a good quality movie or the difficulty in producing one of a good story line and such. Its total gross is more than $22 billion, which is higher than that of the thriller films (shown in the data above) – this tells me that the combination of both can create a very successful film – however, its average gross is the 4th highest, but its market share is very high.

This information from www.the-numbers.com, shows the number 1 films of every year since 1980 – I noticed that most of them each year are Fantasy/Thriller, making them a more popular genre as it seems. I also noticed ticket prices get higher as the years go by, which also contributes to the higher grossing of Fantasy/Thriller film. These films also sell many tickets every year.

Films such as Hunger Games: Catching Fire, have aspects of romance in it which attracts women under 35. Also films such as E.T attract women under 35 because of the emotional aspect of the film. Women of those ages are known for having softer hearts and are more likely to enjoy films such as these.

The variety of people in the audience of Fantasy/Thriller films explains why they are known for having the number 1 films of many years.
