TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH

Now I have gathered some quantitative

research which I have shown in pie charts I am

going to collect some Primary, Qualitative

research. I am going to do this by conducting a

focus group and interviewing a couple of

people who fit into my target audience.

INTERVIEW

Firstly I created some questions which I can ask a

member of my target audience in a recorded

interview. Based on my blog poll research I have

decided to base this research on mise-en-scene ideas

based around what people relate to bullying. I

decided to interview a peer of the age of my target

audience named Holly Beaumont.

INTERVIEWThe first few questions were to show that this individual is in my target audience:

1. What is your favourite music genre?

Holly said that her favourite music genre is RNB. This shows that her favourite music genre is the genre of

music I will be doing my music video to.

2. Who is your favourite music artist?

Holly said that she has more than one favourite artist and these are- Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and

Emile Sande. This is good due to the fact that I have already analysed and related to a fair amount of these

artists in my work.

3. How often do you watch music videos?

Due to the fact that Holly said she watched on average 20 music videos per week I believe that this means

I need to make my music video better than all of the others she watches in order to stand out. I know that

Holly is also a media student like me so I assume that some of these music videos will have been watched

for study purposes.

4. How do you access music videos?

The answer to this question clearly shows that Holly is in my target audience as she watches music videos

on websites such as YouTube. I have dedicated a lot of my target audience decision on the type of people

who watch music videos on this website as this is where my music video will be broadcasted.

INTERVIEW5. Where do you watch music videos?

This answer shows that Holly enjoys watching music videos as she states she watches them

whenever she get the chance to. At college or at home. I believe that a lot of the music videos

will be watched due to the fact that she needs to analyse music videos for studying reasons.

The next question was asked due to the fact that I know Holly studies Media and knows

how important it is to know what your target audience find interesting:

6. In regards to the four key areas what do you think makes a music video most interesting?

With Holly saying Cinematography and mise-en-scene I think I need to do more research into

cinematography as up to now I have planned to do a substantial amount of my research into

mise-en-scene ideas. The opinion that Holly gave was ‘they work together and show hidden

messages’. Due to the fact that I studied these areas in my AS Media studies in great detail I

know this is true so I now plan to do more research into camera angles and framing in order for

my hidden messages to come through.

The next question was asked because I think it is vital I know what the stereotypes are of

RNB should music videos so I can add some of these into my music videos.

Page 6: Target audience research interview

INTERVIEW7. What would you expect to see in a stereo typical RNB SOUL music video?

These answers were mainly based around cinematography, which was helpful due to the fact that I

already want to do some research into this area. Holly said ‘close ups that show the artist face and facial

expressions’. I will include a lot of these in my music video as I want to show exactly how the artist is

feeling throughout the narrative I plan to use as I want to show people how their actions affect others. I

have already shown some research I have done into black and white effects in my textual analysis’ I the

future I am going to do some research into editing software that is available for me to use. In this

research I will search how to do a black and white effect.

The next questions were based around a bullying narrative, the song and mise-en-scene ideas:

8. In a music video based around bullying what would you expect to see?

This answer relates cinematography and the answer I wrote previously, this is because the interviewee

has stated what the close ups will show ‘tears’. Tears show emotion and the emotions I want to show in

my music video.

9. Can you think of any music videos based on bullying?

I asked this question as I want to analyse some music videos based around bullying to see what is already

out there . I will analyse the music videos that the interviewee has commented on: Jessie J – Who’s

Laughing Now and P!NK – F**in Perfect.

INTERVIEW10. Have you listened to the song Clown by Emile Sande?

I only asked this question so that I could relate it to the next question, as if my artist

hadn’t listen to the song the next question would have been irrelevant.

11. What message do you think the song portrays?

I am fond of my interviewee’s answer as I believe that the video shows humiliation also.

Humiliation because it show that somebody has to change in order to be accepted. I

want to show this message in my music video also but in a different way to the original

music video. I want to show how people need to change in everyday life to be accepted

on a smaller scale in schools and colleges around the world in order to fit in.

The next questions relate specifically to mise-en-scene ideas:

12. What would you expect a stereotypical ‘popular’ girl to be wearing?

The type of clothing that my interviewee answered reminded me a lot of the girls at the

college I attend. Maybe I could do a college style post on my blog that shows the outfits

that I se everyday to give me more of an understanding of mainstream fashion.

Page 8: Target audience research interview

INTERVIEW13.What would you expect a stereo typical ‘indie’ girl to be wearing?

Also however the interviewee described a fair amount of other girls which I go to college with

everyday. So the college style idea will work for both aspects of typical popular and indie trends.

14.What props do you relate to bullying?

The fact that Holly didn’t know what to answer to this question at first shows that she wasn’t really

aware of props which are related to bullying. This could show that I don’t need to particularly

concentrate on this areas of mise-en-scene. The message idea was good and the prop of a mobile

phone followed this idea.

15.What setting do you relate to bullying?

This answer was very important because I wanted to use setting and locations which my target

audience already relate to bullying as they will be familiar with the reasons as to why my character

is in particular locations.

16.What colours do you believe connote sadness?

Blue and Black are both dark colours which do connote sadness. I asked this question because I

could possibly surround my artist in these colours or have them wearing these colours in their

outfits.
