For instance if you have a film that is aimed at children yet your not advertising it in a way children can understand, then your not going to get any children watching your product and it may attract the wrong people who wont find the film interesting.

Who is my target audience?

To discover who my target audience is I looked at three pre-existing films, these being Legend, Skyfall and Black Mass. I chose these three particular films because they all have a similar genre to ours, therefore their target audience profiles should be relatively similar to ours. I found all the needed audience profiles on the website Pearl and Dean and each gives an overview of the audiences age and gender which will help us narrow down who the target audience is for Infraction.

Age - Legend

This also means that parents wont want their child watching this film because of very strong language and violence. Its highest percentage of target audience is 15-25 with 28% of viewers being within this age boundary. This shows that younger adults are the most interested in this film and the genre. Yet there are still high percentages of viewers in the 25-34, 35-44 and the 44 plus categories. This is potentially because of the adult themes that run throughout the film and because the film is set in 1960s London. This may attract some of the older viewership.

Skyfall probably has a lower age restriction of 12 because its a high budget franchise of James Bond, so by having the certificate lower it means more people can pay to watch it, so that they make a profit from their extremely high budget. This is perhaps a reason why for this film there are 13% of a viewership from the ages of 7-14, unlike the 0% in both of the other films being compared. Similarly to the other two films, Skyfall has a high percentage of viewers from the age of 15-24 (26%). This supports the idea that the genre is popular amongst younger adults. However the 45 plus market has the same percentage of 26% which is likely because the film is a long running franchise, so they would have likely seen the earlier films.Age - Skyfall

Age Black Mass

Similarly to Legend, Black Mass has 0% of a target audience between the ages of 4-14 which is predictable considering the age certificate of 15. However it has a much stronger percentage of 15-24 year olds compared to the other two films with 37%. This is likely because it has a lower age certificate compared to Legend meaning that many more people would have been able to view this film in cinemas who are in the age boundary of 15-17. This also supports the idea that the genre has a young adult audience profile.

Age- Conclusion

Even though all of the three pre-existing film that I am researching have similar genres, all three have a different age restriction. For instance Skyfall has an age certificate of 12, Black Mass has an age certificate of 15 and Legend has an age certificate of 18. Yet all three show a similar picture, that young adults are the main target audience which shows a strong pattern for this particular action based genre. This means that for our film Infraction will have a young adult based target audience because clearly younger adults love the action and themes of these types of films.

Gender

All three films being analysed all support the idea that men are the dominant gender in the target audience for the genre, with Legend having 72% of a male audience, Skyfall having 61% and Black Mass having 60%. The reason that Black Mass might have a lower percentage of male viewership is because it stars Johnny Depp who is a popular Hollywood actor who is known to be loved by women. A reason why the male target audience may be higher is because of the action and crime involved in all three films which stereotypically is something men find interesting and exciting. However a reason the male percentage may be higher is because all three films have a dominant male lead, so maybe women wouldnt feel like they could relate to the characters. This is why I feel like the gender profile for Infraction is likely to be balanced between male and female because it has the action based crime which stereotypically men enjoy, yet it also has a strong female lead which means women could potentially relate to the characters.
