What did I want to find out?I wanted to find out if there was a profitable market for a magazine of my persona. I

already know the basic demographics of my magazine: 16-19 year old females, therefore I wanted to undertake more in depth research. I’d like to come to an understanding of the potential revenue streams that can boost the profit of my

magazine: such as circulation and advertisement. How much money can be generated simply via selling the magazine? Via advertising? What types of

companies would like to advertise in my magazine? Questions such as these will help me come to an understanding as to what my audience would like to view and

therefore increasing profit.

In addition, beneficial information which I would like to attain is simple elements such as what would be the ideal amount for a magazine? Does my target audience have a large disposable income? Is my magazine actually of interest to my target

audience?

How was this undertaken?

I created a 10 questioned survey on surveymonkey.com asking a range of questions that link with the ideals of my magazine. I decided to distribute it via

facebook, however to ensure only my target audience was selected I sent the survey through personal mail to each female that fitted my target audience.

I chose this format as I believe it would generate results in a quick and concise method, and being that it was paperless way of surveying it was a much easier and

less confusing. In addition, I personally would prefer to fill out an online survey than that of paper, as it is a speeder method. It also meant the research was

primary, therefore would ensure The questions asked were generally closed, therefore forming quantative data;

however questions of which the person had selected ‘other’ had to specify there own choice, making the question open and therefore qualifying its results as

qualitative data. My sample size was 42, therefore being a considerably large; this increases the

validity of my results and is additionally makes it representative.

I believe this question was one of the most important asked, as it

would determine whether or not this type of magazine would be

profitable.

This type question is psychographic, and has clarified

that the magazine could potentially be successful and therefore filling the space of a niche in the market.

This shows that my magazine should be between the regions of £1.01And £2.00, however I want my magazine to be slightly upper-market. I’ll probably place it between the £2.01-£3.00, being that it is second highest amount of votes and would potentially generate a higher revenue stream

through this risk.

This is again a psychographic type question, and the results as displayed are exactly what I

am looking for; the majority have selected Indie music,

which is what my magazine will be predominantly based. This indicates that there is a large

market of which could potentially buy my magazine.

Page 7: Target Audience Research

This again indicates that my magazine is potentially profitable, as my magazine will also be based around fashion- therefore with the

majority selecting yes and relatively this implies that there is a large audience for this type of magazine.

This question gives me an insight into what my target audience would be interested in seeing, and has interestingly selected ‘clothing best picks’ and ‘up and coming bands’ as their supposed favourites. This was a particularly positive response as they relate with the contents I would like to include in

my magazine.

This gives me an idea as to what type of shops I should feature within my magazine and in my media package.Topshop is by far the most favoured shop to shop in, so will be indefinitely featured within my magazine. The vintage websites, boutiques and charity shops seem to dwindle in numbers, however this may be because they shop for replicated versions of vintage style in shops much like that of Topshop, River Island etc. In addition this may also be because they are unknown to the variety of sources of vintage clothing, and this magazine will be able to give them an insight.

These questions were similar in context and was able to determine whether or not my target audience has the actual funds to buy a magazine. Question number 9 indicates that the majority has a job, therefore has a constant income. In addition, this assumes they will have lunch breaks and possible public transport as part of their working day, therefore a magazine would perfectly suffice to serve their boredom. In addition question number 10 shows that most have some sort of money, however an error on my behalf doesn’t state a timespan therefore making this question invalid in some sense.
