Celebrating the International Day for the Prevention of child Abuse, neglect
and Exploitation
Prevention of Child Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation (PCANE) is
an international day celebrated annually on the 19th of November
with a series of activities promoting the safety and protection of
children around the globe.
The Samoa’s National theme for this year is “the safety of children
is mine and yours”. To celebrate PCANE this year the objectives
were to celebrate PCAN 2015 through 1) MY Campaign on Radio,
2)raise parents and children’s awareness on the safety of children
as everyone’s responsibility. 3) Strengthen collaboration with part-
ner on the protection of children within Samoa.
The PCAN Poem competition for children was divided into three categories. 1) Children age 5-8 years, 2)
children age 9-12 years, 3) children age13-15 years. This task encouraged the children to express their
opinions and feelings on issues affecting them of children they know
of in everyday living. It was also an opportunity for children them-
selves to identify solutions to the problems affecting them in certain
places. The flyers were out on the first week of November inviting
children under 3 categories to submit poems in either English or Sa-
moan. There were 3 judges selected to mark all poems from the
three categories, 164 children submitted poems. The 9-12 years
category had the most entries of 102. There were three children with
disabilities that submitted poems for the competition, and received
compliment prizes for their effort of participation and encourage
other persons with disabilities to give their opinions in these compe-
tition in the future.
The MY Campaign was a whole week talk back show on Radio Ta-
lofa FM. This activity was intended to elevate public awareness on
factors and beliefs contributing into violence against children.
Speakers were invited to speak on different areas regarding the over-
all theme of the year. The radio program was aired for 30 minutes
from 3.30 – 4pm after school. This method allowed children to call
in and answer questions that were asked regarding the content of the
program. This was
also a tool to test the
listening skills as well as children’s understanding of the is-
sues / points covered during the radio show.
Tv1 and EFKS TV are now airing convey messages on the
importance of protection of children from physical violence
as well as sexual abuse. These advertisements are now aired
for the period of 12 months starting from November 19th
2015 – November 19th 2016. The methodology focused and
targeted the wider population as a reminder that children are
also victims of violence and to re-emphasize on duties to en-
sure children are safe and grow up to become good citizens
of our country. In addition the voice over of the advertise-
ments was also aired on the radio during the Radio talk back
show.
