This 2-day event has the world-renowned social psychologist Kenneth Gergen inviting you into a dialogue about challenging issues in professional and personal life, and offers a fresh and illuminating approach to moving forward effectively with others. Gergen proposes that we look at our lives not in terms of individual motives, traits, or characteristics, but in terms of our immersion in ongoing in relational process. We are caught up in patterns of relational performance, and these patterns can both enrich and oppress. Whether these are dances of life or death, and how we can transform the choreography, will be major subjects of concern.

The two days will look at pressing issues in both professional and personal life. Issues of conflict, ethics, decision making, power, alienation, misunderstanding, and friendship and intimacy, for example, will all be considered. Specialized issues of diagnosis and evidence based practice will also receive attention. Human service providers, care givers, administrators, and educators will all be along those who will find these days especially useful. But everyone - regardless of age and profession - will be enriched.

The event will take place as an inspiring mix between theoretical and practical input from Gergen, dialogues on and off stage, and working groups taking the dialogues to the test in the production of new ideas and new texts.

Kenneth Gergen is a major figure in the social constructionist movement and has pub-lished a number of books on a range of professional and contemporary issues. Among his major writings are Realities and Relationships (dansk: Virkeligheder og relationer), The Saturated Self (dansk: Det mættede selv), Relational Being: Beyond Self and Community (dansk: Relationel tilblivelse), An Invitation to Social Construction (dansk: En invitation til social konstruktion), Relational Leading: Practices for Dialogically Based Collaboration (dansk: Relationel ledelse) with Lone Hersted. He is also a cherished teacher and speaker.

This 2-day workshop is aimed at practitioners of psychotherapy It will bring the ideas of relational performance into the realm of psychotherapy and open dialogues to inspire a new look at both clients and therapeutic practices.

Kenneth Gergen will present his current thinking on therapy with the pur-pose of bringing fresh ideas on such topics as systemic process, diagnosis, therapist identity, client resources, and the limits of language into dialogue. The ultimate goal will be to invite the development of new potentials for practice. Participants will also work with therapeutic dilemmas or cases in this light, and will be invited to take part in new imaginings of the field. A client will be invited for a session to make the dialogue include not only the professional perspective, but the client’s as well.

Kenneth Gergen has for many years worked with therapists from a social constructionist perspective, as witnessed in books such as: Therapy as Social Con-struction (edited with Sheila McNamee), Therapeutic Realities, and his contributions to Family Process, Human Systems, Narrative Psychology, Psychotherapy, Journal for Systemic Therapy, and the Journal of Family Therapy. In this workshop he combines this longstanding interest with the perspective of professional practice as performance, as described in his books, Relational Being: Beyond Self and Community (dansk: Relationel tilblivelse), and Playing with Purpose: Adventures in Performative Social Science (with Mary Gergen).
