What to expect in 2017

HorticultureDue to a favourable climate, Arusha is home to many major player in horti-culture. Also, this fast growing sector in Tanzania is a priority in Dutch policy. AgriProFocus Tanzania plans to build a renewed network in this sector and wants to develop a concept note for a horticulture programme with primarily national ambitions. We will organise a big horti event for 2018, as a conclu-sion of the lessons learned in 2017. The envisioned change is to have co-ordinated learning in the horticulture sector revolving around emerging and recurring topics as food safety and residues, year-round production and agri-inputs.

GenderWomen agriprofessionals are often excluded from accessing services for their agribusiness activities. To im-prove this, AgriProFocus Tanzania will prioritizegender in value chains. The main activities in 2017 will be building a network and offering the Gender coaching track. We aim to build and facilitate a supportive learning network where members can learn how to de-sign and implement gender inclusive agribusiness interventions. Companies and organisations will develop relevant knowledge, practice tools and metho-dologies to put gender sensitive inter-ventions and policies into practice.

Access to FinanceLimited access to services such as finance and knowledge affect the growth of agricultural value chains. AgriProFocus Tanzania will focus on fi-nancial literacy for business planning in 2017. There will be a series of smaller finance meetings on climate resilient, circular agribusiness, nutrition security and inclusiveness. Changemakers can pitch their business approach for each of these topics and inspire innovation in others. The envisioned change in agri-finance is that decision makers will be triggered by our sessions and practi-cal examples and implement and spark development in their sector. Activities include agri-finance learning labs and B2B meetings.

AGRIPROFOCUS Tanzania Network Plans

As a network, we believe that primary producers are key to lo-cal economic growth, sustainable agri-food systems, and food security for all. AgriProFocus Tanzania convenes stakeholders from the private and public sector and civil society that are committed to work with entrepreneurial farmers. It is our mis-sion to facilitate coordination, broker and create spaces and opportunities for multi–stakeholder action, learning and de-bate. AgriProFocus Tanzania sees opportunities for supporting transformation in the livestock and horticulture sectors with a focus on agri-finance, gender and youth. At the annual Lea-dership Summit the SFL brings together leaders, to reflect on what is happening and what needs to happen in food systems. This inspires change, and is often the starting point for new partnerships and change initiatives.

In 2017, AgriProFocus Tanzania plans to organise with its members a series of smaller network sessions to discuss the new elements in our strategic plan: circular business, climate smart agriculture and inclusive agribusiness.

Regional & Global Activities

AgriProFocus Tanzania will join the youth in agribusiness com-munity developed by the Young Expert Programme (YEP) to learn through the proposed regional youth event & activities planned for 2017 in East Africa. Also, following participation in the Gender in Value Chains National Coach training in Uganda, we will closely collaborate and participate in activities and even-ts of this network in the coming year. AgriProFocus postponed its plans for a global horticulture con-ference linked to AgriTech in January 2017. This year, a roadmap with activities geared to changemakers is to culminate in a sec-tor leadership summit early 2018.

The focus of AgriProFocus Tanzania

In addition to the three priority programmes, AgriProFocus Tan-zania hosts 2 projects on youth and livestock. We will involve young changemakers and link young entrepreneurs to business opportunities. In the online learning labs on dairy and poultry, we aim to a new module ‘dare to share insights’ and expect to identify changemakers & role models in livestock.
