Program Notes Tango Loco is written in a basic AABA form with a solo section. This section, which occurs just before

the B section, includes suggested melodies for the violins and viola. Advanced shifting is required for first violins and cellos. As Tango Loco opens, the bass and cello join to establish the ostinato pattern that defines the Tango form. The violins and violas soon introduce the main melody as the cello responds with a counter melody. As the violins continue with the main melody, the violas engage in a responsive duet with the cellos. The violas are given the melody for the second A section, while the melody in the B section is carried by the first violins. As the A section returns, the violins present the harmonized melody as the cello and viola engage in a duet type accompaniment. The bass maintains the traditional tango ostinato pattern with some interesting melodic interpretations. About the Composer Reynard Burns is a composer, arranger, educator, and performer. His compositions include works for full and string orchestra, wind ensemble, concert band, and other ensemble combinations. In 2001 his orchestral composition won the Merle Isaac Composition Contest sponsored by the American String Teacher’s Association. The Long Island Philharmonic performed Flying in 2010 in its concert honoring

Long Island Composers. His compositions for jazz and improvising strings have been played across the United States and abroad. In July 2012 the Long Island Philharmonic Orchestra performed his arrangement of Nat King Cole’s Straighten Up and Fly Right as a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen. Reynard has and continues to present lectures, workshops, and music reading sessions at national, state and local conferences as well as school venues. These sessions cover Jazz strings, rehearsal techniques and a diversity of styles and composers including the music of composers of African Descent. He is currently director of the Dowling College Orchestra. In addition to composing he has also appeared as guest conductor for county and local orchestras.
