Tánger y Tetuán han sido desde siempre dos ciudades literarias, fasci-nantes, dos lugares cargados de historia que han mostrado la cara más cosmopolita de Marruecos.la primera, abierta al Mediterráneo y al atlántico, siempre ha vivido bajo la aureola de ciudad internacional y con la mirada puesta en el estrecho de Gibraltar. Tangier and Tetouan have always been two fascinating literary cities, two places full of history that have shown the most cosmopolitan side of Morocco.The first opens to the Mediterranean and the atlantic; it has always been considered an international city with one eye towards the Strait of Gibraltar. Tetouan, the white dove, preserves its medina intact, and its streets maintain the structure of a Spanish city, inde-lible proof of the Protectorate that lasted from 1913 to 1956. María duenas’s novel, The Time between Seams, is set halfway through this period, during the Spanish Civil War. its protagonist, Sira Quiroga, arrives in a Tangier abuzz with spies and passions. Cinco kilómetros de muralla rodean los cinco barrios de la medina de Tetuán. Al sur está el Tranqat, junto al ensan-che edificado durante el Protectorado español. Al este Blad, el barrio aristo-crático, y al oeste Aaiun, el más po-pular. Aunque las zonas más visitadas son Suica, la más antigua, y la Mellah, el barrio judío cerca de la Plaza Princi-pal y el Palacio Real.Five kilometres of walls surround the five districts of the medina of Tetouan. To the south, there is Tranqat along the expansion district built during the Spanish Protectorate. To the east, there is Blad, the aristocratic quarter, and to the west Aaiun, the working-class one. However, the most visited areas are Suica, the oldest, and Me-llah, the Jewish quarter near the Main Square and the Royal Palace.

Tangier is now less international, more Moroccan, more autochthonous, but many of the landmark buildings of that era still stand.“Sometimes, we ended up in Haffa un-der tents by the seaside until dawn. With people lying on mats on the floor, smoking kif and drinking tea. rich arabs, europeans of uncertain fortune...” the novel tells. and Haffa with its terraces remains open. The medina is found nearby, as is the kasbah that overlooks the entire city.

La avenida Pasteur es la gran arteria de Tánger, el lugar donde la ciudad muestra su carácter cosmopolita y el sitio preferido para un paseo a media tarde. La avenida marca la división en-tre la medina y la ciudad moderna, y allí se encuentran las principales tien-das. En una de sus esquinas se ubica el Gran Café de París, uno de los más antiguos, y al final de la calle, la plaza Faro ofrece excelentes vistas sobre el puerto y el estrecho de Gibraltar.

Pasteur Avenue is the main street of Tangier, where the city shows its cosmopolitan character and it is the best place for a mid-afternoon walk. The avenue marks the border bet-ween the medina and the modern city, and there, we can find the major retailers. On a corner, we can find the Grand Café de Paris, one of the ol-dest, and at the end of the street, the Faro Square offers great views of the harbour and the Strait of Gibraltar.

Many of the scenes in the novel keep revealing the city to the vi-sitor: boulevard Pasteur, Moulay Hafid Pala-ce, rosalinda Fox’s house, and the american legation where Mrs. Hillgarth meets Sira, all pepper the different neighbourhoods built after Tangier was declared an interna-tional zone in 1925. The people of Tangier are friendly and they welcome visitors. The Mohamed vi avenue, formerly españa avenue, stretches along the coastline facing the Strait. The light is strong, intense. no wonder it seduced di-plomats and artists: Paul bowles who lived and died here; painters such as Henri Ma-tisse and eugène delacroix, who remained

Sira Quiroga’s path in The Time between Seams leads to Tetouan, a city that sleeps at the foot of the rif, with streets and squares that give it a most andalusian appearance.We return to the reading: “Then, we entered the luneta, by the Jewish quarter, by the medina. luneta, my first street in Tetouan: narrow, noisy, irregular and lively, crowded, full of taverns, cafes and overflowing ba-zaars where everything was bought and everything was sold”, says Sira. para observar aquel mismo bullicio. la me-dina donde la protagonista se extravía casi al inicio de la trama sigue siendo un túnel a través del tiempo donde se mezclan olores, sonidos y voces. Huele a té, a hierbabuena y a canela, a kif y a cientos de especias... Hasta que al cruzar una esquina la realidad cambia y los aromas ahora son a cordero o a pieles y cuero. Y enseguida, las calles de artesanos e hiladores, con tiendas de alfombras y todo lo que se pueda pensar en comprar y vender.dentro de la medina, en el reducto, un típi-co riad marroquí regentado por ruth barreto, una mujer canaria enamorada de esta tierra, se rodaron varias escenas de la serie televisiva, y aquí se hospedó la actriz adriana ugarte du-rante los días que el equipo estuvo en Tetuán.Fuera de las murallas, la avenida Mohamed v, en su día calle del Generalísimo, la plaza de españa, la plaza Moulay el Mehdi –donde tuvo lugar la recepción de Serrano Suñer–, y la avenida Hassan ii donde supuestamente se encontraba el taller de costura de Sira Qui-roga sumergen al visitante en una atmósfera que atrapa y seduce y que permite disfrutar de Tetuán bajo una nueva luz.otro de los escenarios del libro es la antigua estación de tren reconvertida en Museo de arte Moderno. aquí se pueden admirar algu-nos de los cuadros de Mariano bertuchi, un pintor granadino de principios del siglo XX que supo captar con toda su belleza y colorido la vida en el norte del país magrebí.Cae la tarde, empieza a llover, y la lluvia atempera la llamada del muecín. la literatu-ra y los viajes tienen mucho en común. Co-nocer un territorio, una ciudad, de la mano de una buena novela es una forma muy her-mosa de viajar. Tánger y Tetuán reviven en las descripciones de El tiempo entre costuras y nos enseñan posiblemente la cara menos turística y más auténtica de Marruecos. ■

the beginning of the plot is still a tunnel through time where smells, sounds and voices blend. it smells like tea, mint and cinnamon, kif and hundreds of spices... un-til you turn a corner and reality changes; now, there are aromas of lamb, skins and leather. and then, the streets of artisans and spinners appear with carpet shops and everything you can think of buying and se-lling.inside the medina, in el reducto, a typi-cal Moroccan riad run by ruth barreto –a woman from the Canary islands who is in love with this land–, several scenes were filmed for the Tv series, and actress adria-na ugarte stayed here, while the team was in Tetouan.outside the walls, Mohamed v avenue, for-merly Generalissimo Street, españa Square, Moulay el Mehdi Square –where the Serra-no Suñer reception took place–, and Has-san iidonde avenue –where Sira Quiroga’s sewing shop was supposed to be– immerse the visitor in an atmosphere that traps and seduces, as well as allow him to enjoy Te-touan in a new light.another setting for the book is the old train station converted into a Museum of Modern art. Here you can admire some of Mariano bertuchi’s paintings. He was a 20th century painter from Granada, who captured life in the north of the north afri-can country with all its beauty and colour.late afternoon, it starts to rain, and rain softens the call of the muezzin. literature and travel have much in common. visiting a land, a city, with a good novel in hand is a beautiful way to travel. Tangier and Tetouan come to life in the descriptions of The Time between Seams and they may even show us a less touristic and more authentic side of Morocco. ■
