The classroom without barriers was created to augmentthe Montessori Method of Learning. The Montessorimethod encourages the students to learn from each other. This includes the mixing of different age groups. The classrooms are defined with stairs and half levels. The stairs become the place where classrooms interact with each other. The classrooms are no longer divided with walls. The school becomes one large classroom, which fosters the Montessori Method of learning.

connection between unit

UNITThe unit consists of 6 layers of concentric squares. The center layer dimension is 1.5 inches. The layers dimension increase by 2 inches as it progresses to the outside layer. In each layer there are 4 half inch grooves that allow movement between the layers. On the outside layer there are also 4 half inch grooves, but they allow connec-tion between units. The concen-tric system allows for a variety of density of a unit. A compressed unite creates a smaller surface area and higher density of mate-rials. An expanded unit creates more surface area and less density in unit.

The unit allows the user to controlthe amount of surface area anddensity. For an exterior wall, this allows the user to control the timelag of a thermal wall. The thermalwall has different heating properties. The different properties can be usedfor different parts of the program ofa building. Program used during the first half of the day would havean expanded unit. The unit withthe increased surface area and lowerdensity allows for the space to be heated up quickly. Program usedduring the second half of the daywould have a compressed unit. The smaller the surface area is, the densitywill increase. The increased time lag willheat up the program at night whenit is in use. Another application for the unit is to place the towards theprevailing winds. The unit’s cavitywould funnel through the wind andwould increase the speed creatingmore air circulation. Also , it could be used for its acoustic properties. The variety of configuration of the unit could be arranged to either enhance or deaden the sound quality.

Each unit consist of 44 pieces of 4inch wide mdf. The length of eachpiece of mdf increases by 1 inch as it spreads from the center. The cen-ter length starts at 1.5 inches and outer layer at 10.5 inches. There are6 layers in each unit. A layer consistof 8 pieces of mdf. A side of a layerhas 2 pieces of mdf stapled and centered together. The inside piece of mdf is 1 inch shorter than the piece of outer mdf. The difference of length creates a groove for the adjacentslayers to slide. After creating all 6layers, insert the smaller layers insidethe largest layers. The concentricunits is now complete. One nowcan control the surface area and material density of a unit.

Galileo’s Gallery in an expansion to the Insitutue and Museum of the History of Science.Set in Florence, Italy, the consideration of the urban context is significant in not disturbingthe existing buildings which surround the area. The gallery responds to the exit of the UffiziGallery that sits adjacent to the site. Frontal Planes create relations to the context and givethe form to the gallery. A major extension is a loggia that mimics the Uffizi and creates connections for the Piazza de Castellani and the Piazza de Guidici.

DIGIFABmaterials and meanings

location: dallas museum of artdate: spring 2008group: digital fabrication class

The Dallas Museum of Art opened an new educational wing for the children in May 2008.The DMA requested and donated money to the Digital Fabrication class to design and build a 30’ curved wall to be displayed in its first exhibition. The exhibition challenges the idea of material and meanings. For example, Frank Gehrey’s card board chair, a sturdyobject was made up of sheets of paper. The hydocal side of the wall is made up of 126 tiles. Each, tile was casted in fabric giving it a soft texture. One does not realize that itis actually hard until close inspection. The crescent board side of the wall is made up of 126 custom tiles. Each tile is made up of four laser cut layers of crescent board. The impression of the wall. is hard and coral like, but crescent board is perceived as beingfragile

The challenge of the expansion of Eliel Saarinen’s current museum and library is not on focusingon current trends in design, but to discover how the preservation of the existing structure can provoke an innovative rethinking about current conventions about designs.

ELEVATE twist and zig zag

location: dallas farmer’s marketdate: summer 2008group: tan nguyen, jordan dixon

The site is adjacent to the Dallas Farmer’s Market. The form of the prefabricated units allow units to have both views of the Dallas downtown and the Farmer’s market. There are three different units: elevate, twist and zig zag. Througn lifting, twisting, and zig zagging, each unitwould not block each other’s views.

The growth of the world population will lead to an enormous demand for space. Creation of a new urban fabric, dominated by the pedestrian, suspends life from above. Parasites suction onto the building onto the to provides its vitality for the ever changing program. As culture evolves over time, the highrise adapts to its needs.
