THEME JOTA/JOTA MEETING HALL DATE 13 OCT

TIME ACTIVITY LEADER EQUIPMENT2pm to 4pm Jota/Joti

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT"JOTA/ JOTI is held every year on the third full weekend in October and reinforces the objective of the 4th Scout law, which is "A Scout is brother to all" , it provides the op-portunity and benefit of being able to participate in an International activity on a grand scale and the interaction of not only fellow Scouters around the world but with members of the Guide movement as well.In 'Scouting for Boys' Lord Baden Powell wrote '...distances have become so much smaller through motor transport, aeroplanes, and radio that people of different countries have a better chance of getting to know each other more closely.'

While most Scouts will not be able to attend a World Jamboree, by participating in Jam -boree of the Air, which is the largest youth activity in Scouting, they will be able to com-municate with fellow Scouts throughout the world.

During the JOTA weekend all members of all Sections of Scouting and Guiding all over the World are invited to contact one another using radio communication. The most com-mon means of communication during JOTA is that provided by Amateur Radio. For 41 years Amateur radio operators or HAMS have donated their time to Scouts and Guides during the JOTA period, they do this on a volunteer basis receiving no money for their time or the use of their equipment. We as Scouts owe them a huge thank you for making this event possible.

Leaning Tower of PisaHave the kids make their own Leaning Tower of Pisa. This neat thing about this tower is

that it can double as a napkin holder for those "Italian celebrations"!

This craft was inspired by Christa from Kenosha, WI who challenged us to come up with an Italian craft for a dinner (suitable for children 12 and up).

Here's what you'll need...

• Tp roll (or paper towel roll cut to fit) • Gray or white paint • Paint brush • 10-12 white or gray pipe cleaners • Wire cutters or sharp kitchen scissors • Glue • White napkin or paper towel

Here's how you make it...

1. Trim a little bit off on end of your tp roll. Cut it on an angle so your tower will "lean". Paint it gray or white (we did ours gray).

2. Cut a bunch of pipe cleaners into 2 inch sections. Bend each section to make an arch. We wrapped our around a pencil.

3. Glue a pipe cleaner around the top of your tower. Glue an arch below it.

4. Continue gluing arches all the way around. Glue another strip of pipe cleaner underneath. Glue another row of arches underneath.

5. Glue arches all the way down to the end of your tower, gluing strips of pipe cleaner in between.

6. Fold and roll a napkin and place it inside to finish off yourLeaning Tower of Pisa!

Your napkin probably needs to be paper, a cloth one may be too heavy and may tip over your tower!

GameLupa Della Ore

Lupa Della Ore is an outdoor game known in other countries as "What time is it, Mr. Wolf?" One player is chosen to be Mr. Wolf. This person stands about 5 yards away from the other children and does not initially face them. The children facing Mr. Wolf shout out, "What time is it, Mr. Wolf?" Mr. Wolf turns around and says a time, for example, "3 o'clock." The children facing Mr. Wolf take three steps. This verbal give and take continues until the children are close to Mr. Wolf. They ask again what time it is and eventually Mr. Wolf replies "Time to eat you!" and begins to chase the children. When Mr. Wolf catches a child, that person be-comes the new Mr. Wolf.

Where is Italy? - Italy Map

• Italy lies in Southern Europe, a flight to Rome take roughly 2.5 hours from London/England, 8 hours from New York/USA

Italy is easy to recognize on any world map, as the country is shaped like a high-heeled boot, as you can see on the map above. It looks like the boot is kicking a ball, which is the island of Sicily, don’t you think?

Italy Facts: Geography

In the North, the mountain range of the Alps separates Italy from the other European countries France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

The highest mountain of Italy can be found in the Alps. It is the Monte Bianco, better known as Mont Blanc, which is 4,807m. There are many long and deep lakes in the North of Italy, bevor the country flattens in the Po Valley. The Po is Italys longest river.

The Apennines are another big mountain range which go all along the boot and separate the East and the West of the country.

In the South of Italy you will find Italy’s three active volcanoes: Vesuvius near Naples, Etna on Sicily and Stromboli off the Coast of Italy. Italy is subdivided in 20 regions, like Tuscany, Veneto (around Venice) and Lazio (around Rome).

Did you know that Italy surrounds two of the world’s smallest countries? These are San Marino in Northern Italy, the oldest republic in the world and Vatican City in Rome, the smallest country in the world. Vatican City is led by the Pope and is the headquarters of the Ro-man Catholic Church, led by the Pope.

Italy Facts: Animals in Italy

Sheep are held mainly in Southern Italy and the donkeys still help farmers in remote villages to carry heavy loads over steep terrain.

Some years ago there was a big scare in Italy about brown bear, which attacked farm animals in Northern Italy. Brown bears are protected in Italy, as there are only few bears left in the wild now.

In the Alps you will very likely see the marmots, which make a very high pitched calling sound. And if you are very lucky you might even spot a lynx.

More info on which animals can be found in the Italian National Parks here.

More Italy Facts: Italian Language

Italian is a language which is coming from Latin and you still can recognize the roots.

However not all people in Italy speak proper Italian, but one of its many Italian dialects. Some of the older people, can neither speak Italian, but only the local dialect or will speak only German when living in the Northern Region of Alto Adige, a French dialect in the Valle d’Aosta or Ladino in the Trentino.

The pronunciation is soft and very melodic and so is still used in opera and is popular by young musicians. So even German composers used the language in opera as it sounds much softer than German.

Most young people learn to speak English, French or German as well in school in Italy.

Some Italy Facts about Italian People

Remembrance Day

HistoryAt 5am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the Armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The demands of the Armistice included the withdrawal of German forces to the east bank of the Rhine within 30 days; immediate cessation of warfare; and surrender of the German fleet and all heavy guns with no further negotiations until the signing of the peace treaty.

The armistice became effective at 11am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended.

The cease-fire was made permanent the following year when members of the Commonwealth and the League of Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles. People across the world celebrated the war's end - celebrations tempered by thoughts of the enormous suffering and loss of life resulting from the War.

World War I began in 1914 and lasted for four years. More than 416 000 Australians volunteered for service in World War I. Of these, 324 000 served overseas. More than 60 000 Australians were killed, including 45 000 who died on the Western Front in France and Belgium and more than 8 000 who died on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. As well as Australian soldiers, many nurses in the Australian Army Nursing Service served on the Western Front. These nurses worked in over-crowded hospitals for up to 16 hours a day, looking after soldiers with shocking injuries and burns.

Those who worked in hospitals close to the fighting were also in danger of being shelled by the en-emy.

In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day - a day to remember those who died in World War I. The day continues to be commemorated in Allied countries. After World War II the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom's proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day.

In October 1997 the then Governor-General issued a Proclamation declaring 11 November as Re-membrance Day - a day to remember the sacrifice of those who have died for Australia in wars and conflicts.

The Proclamation reinforced the importance of Remembrance Day and encouraged all Australians to renew their observance of the event

Significance of poppies

Red poppies are often worn on Remembrance Day. The tradition has its origins in a poem written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a doctor in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. Lieuten-ant Colonel McCrae noticed that, despite the devastation caused by the war to towns, farms and forests, thousands of small red poppies began growing everywhere in Spring. This inspired his poem, In Flanders Fields:

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on rowThat mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;To you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

The poem was first published in England’s Punch magazine in December 1915 and within months came to symbolize the sacrifices of all who were fighting in World War 1.

In 1918 Moina Michael, an American, wrote a poem in reply, We Shall Keep the Faith, in which she promised to wear a poppy 'in honour of our dead' and so began the tradition of wearing a poppy in remembrance.

JOEY PROGRAM TERM 4 2012

It was French YMCA Secretary, Madame Guerin, who in 1918 conceived the idea of selling silk poppies to help needy soldiers.

Poppies were first sold in England on Armistice Day in 1921 by members of the British Legion to raise money for those who had been incapacitated by the war.

The practice began in Australia the same year, promoted by the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Im-perial League of Australia (now known as the Returned & Services League of Australia, or RSL).

In the lead-up to 11 November each year, the RSL sells red poppies for Australians to pin on their lapels, with proceeds helping the organisation undertake welfare work.

Since 1921 wearing a poppy has enabled Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts during the past 100 years.

Observation of silence at 11 am

As a mark of respect to those who have died and suffered, people in Australia are encouraged to stop what they are doing at 11 am to observe one minute’s silence and reflect on the loss and suffer-ing caused by war.

The idea of observing a period of silence was first proposed by Melbourne journalist Edward George Honey, who proposed a period of silence for national remembrance in a letter published in the London Evening News on 8 May 1919.

The suggestion came to the attention of King George V. After testing the practicality of five minutes’ silence – a trial was held with five Grenadier Guardsmen standing to attention for the si-lence – the King issued a proclamation on 7 November 1919 which called for a two-minute silence. His proclamation requested that "all locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead".

At 11 am on 11 November 1919, Australians, for the first time, paused and stood in silent tribute to the men and women of the 1st Australian Imperial Force who had died on battlefields in Gallipoli, Europe and in the Middle East.

In 1997, the Governor-General issued a proclamation urging all Australians to observe the one minute silence on Remembrance Day. It is also still appropriate for two minutes’ silence to be ob-served.

Pinecone Christmas Ornament Supplies

For this craft, you're going to need pinecones, glue, a paintbrush, glitter, paper or plastic plates, thread and scissors.

And for other variations, you may want to also have paint, ribbon, ornament hooks and sparkly pompoms.

Create the Ornament Hook

First, cut a ten to twelve inch piece of thread and tie it around the top scales of the pinecone. Then grab the ends, and tie another knot, keeping the knot up high, to create a loop for it to hang. And cut off the ends of the thread.

Paint the Pinecone Ornaments

Put down a plate to prevent messy glitter and glue from spilling. Kids can then take a small paint brush and add glue to the scales, and then either sprinkle the pine cone with glitter or roll it in the glitter. If us-ing white glitter, you may want to put it mostly on the ends of the scales, in places where it looks like snow would fall. And then put it in a safe place to dry before hanging it on your tree.

Pinecone Christmas Tree Ornament Variations

For some fun variations, you may want to paint the pinecone first. Then add the glue and glitter and to the top, glue on a sparkly pompom ball.To hang your pinecone ornament, instead of thread, you can use a ribbon. Just like before, tie it to the end of the pinecone and then tie another knot. to create a loop. Or you can take a Christmas ornament hook, tie a piece of thread around the pinecone, and attach the hook to the thread. Besides the tree, you can put the ornaments in a bowl to use as a decoration, or use them to liven up presents as well.

Candy Cane Christmas Ornament

o make a candy cane Christmas tree ornament, wrap red and green pipe cleaners around criss-crossed candy canes, curl the ends of the pipe cleaners and glue small bells to the front. Hang up a handmade candy cane ornament by one of the candy hooks with instructions from an experienced craftswoman in this free video on Christmas crafts

The Christmas Story Game Equipment: Nil To Play: Joey Scouts and Parents form a circle. Leaders start with one person to be the Christmas Fairy Leader (I always try and chose one of the Dads, they make great fairies). Then count off around the circle tapping each person and naming them as below. 1. Bells 2. Christmas Trees 3. Presents 4. Lights 5. Santa

Leader demonstrates to all participants the actions done when they hear their part named in the story. Eg; Bells- Step forward and call out Ding Dong, swaying from side to side as they call. Actions for the story Bells – Step forward and call out Ding Dong, swaying from side to side as they call. Christmas Tree – Step forward call out “rattle, rattle” as they place their arms outstretched and shake their bodies. Presents –Step forward call out “surprise” and fling their arms upwards. Lights-Step forward arms up, fingers blinking and call out “blink, blink” Santa – Step forward arms rubbing tummy and call out “Ho, Ho, Ho” Christmas Fairy – Up on their toes, arms ballerina style above their head, and turn around, call “twinkle, twinkle”.

JOEY PROGRAM TERM 4 2012

Last week I went to the shopping centre with my mother to help buy some Christmas decorations. We really needed a new Christmas tree. I asked my mother if we could get new lights at the same time.

We walked into David Jones it was wonderful. The whole shop was decorated, there were huge Bells hanging from the ceiling. They had Christmas Trees everywhere. There were hundreds of lights around the shop. In the centre of the store was Santa, he was surrounded by presents. It all looked so special! I asked my mother if I could sit on Santa’s knee. I wanted to tell him what presents I would like for Christmas. While I was talking to Santa I noticed the bells hanging from the ceiling were playing music when the lights blinked. Santa told me that he would be happy to bring me a special present. He knew I had been good all year. He said he would leave it under the Christmas tree for me.

Mum and I went to the decorations area. I walked up and down the aisles looking at all the bells, lights, and Christmas trees. They even had special paper for wrapping the Presents. Finally we purchased a huge Christmas tree. The little lights we picked out, had Santa’s that hung from pretty bells, in between the lights. These would look great on the new Christmas tree. It was all so exciting, but there was one thing missing. I searched where they had the lights, Christmas Trees and bells but I could not find what I was looking for! I had even searched the area where they were wrapping presents.

Then finally, up in the corner a glittery gown caught my eye. It was just what I was looking for; the one thing that would set off our new Christmas tree and the lights with the little Santa’s with the bells; it was boxed like a present. “It was the most beautiful Christmas Fairy I had ever seen”!

made from handprints traced on construction pa-per.

Supplies needed:

Paper bags

Deep red (or another color) construction paper

Glue

Scissors

Markers or crayons

Optional - googly eyes

Trace two hands on construction paper. Cut them out. These will be the reindeer's antlers.

Fold the two square edges of a paper bag under (at the dotted lines), to form the reindeer's head.
